"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ" --Gandhi

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt

"A little revolution, now and then, is a good thing." -Thomas Jefferson-

"In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in 12 years, we'll be voting for plants." -Lewis Black-

"When you're born in the world you're given a ticket to the freakshow; when you're born in America you're given a front-row seat. And some of us in the front row have notebooks and pencils." -George Carlin

Interesting Times: Test Marketing - War in Iran
Topic: Media 7:41 pm EDT, Sep  2, 2007

They [the source’s institution] have “instructions” (yes, that was the word used) from the Office of the Vice-President to roll out a campaign for war with Iran in the week after Labor Day; it will be coordinated with the American Enterprise Institute, the Wall Street Journal, the Weekly Standard, Commentary, Fox, and the usual suspects. It will be heavy sustained assault on the airwaves, designed to knock public sentiment into a position from which a war can be maintained. Evidently they don’t think they’ll ever get majority support for this—they want something like 35-40 percent support, which in their book is “plenty.”

Here's something to keep an eye open for.

The Denver Post - Doug Lamborn's voice messages to Jonathan and Anna Bartha
Topic: Politics and Law 7:21 pm EDT, Sep  2, 2007

"I would like to get together with you and show this to you and appeal to you as a brother and sister in Christ. You didn't give me that opportunity but I am happy to overlook that and deal with you on that level because I think that is the right thing to do and show you where you made a blatant, wrong statement.

"Now there are consequences to this kind of thing, but I would like to work with you in a way that is best for everyone here concerned.

Just when I thought things couldn't get any more screwed up for the GOP, one of their Congressmen apparently thinks he needs to get Biblical on someone's ass.

This should prompt an amusing counter statement from Mr. Lamborn.

Gay Marriage in Iowa? Yep! - DesMoinesRegister.com
Topic: Current Events 1:09 pm EDT, Aug 31, 2007

A Polk County judge on Thursday struck down Iowa's law banning gay marriage.

The ruling by Judge Robert Hanson concluded that the state's prohibition on same-sex marriage is unconstitutional and he ordered the Polk County recorder to issue marriage licenses to six gay couples.

That's ain't them damn liberals in Massachewsetts doin' this. It's pig raisin' country!

Update Having now read the opinion, the following line really stands out.

"So far as this court can tell, (symbol thingy I don't have a key for)595.2(1) operates only to harm same-sex couples and their children."

(underline in the original p.55)

That sounds pretty damning to me...

Update 2 The order has been stayed pending appeal.

HHS Toned Down Breast-Feeding Ads - washingtonpost.com

In a February 2004 letter (pdf), the lobbyists told then-HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson they were "grateful" for his staff's intervention to stop health officials from "scaring expectant mothers into breast-feeding," and asked for help in scaling back more of the ads.

Good grief, the Bushies aren't even letting babies have the boobs? Go away Bushies!

White House Press Secretary Snow Resigns - The Huffington Post
Topic: Politics and Law 12:33 pm EDT, Aug 31, 2007

Tony Snow, the highly visible White House press secretary, will leave his job on Sept. 14 and be replaced by his deputy, Dana Perino, an administration official said Friday.

Remember what I said about having the ducks in a row when someone leaves? Tony out, Dana in. Gonzo out, ummm...

Here's hoping Tony gets better.

Report Finds Little Progress On Iraq Goals - washingtonpost.com
Topic: War on Terrorism 1:04 pm EDT, Aug 30, 2007

The person who provided the draft report to The Post said it was being conveyed from a government official who feared that its pessimistic conclusions would be watered down in the final version -- as some officials have said happened with security judgments in this month's National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq. Congress requested the GAO report, along with an assessment of the Iraqi security forces by an independent commission headed by retired Marine Gen. James L. Jones, to provide a basis for comparison with the administration's scorecard. The Jones report is also scheduled for delivery next week.

Gee, the White House is planning to spin another report? That's a shock.

Census Shows a Modest Rise in U.S. Income - New York Times
Topic: Current Events 8:36 pm EDT, Aug 29, 2007

Experts said the rise in income was mainly a reflection of an increase in the number of family members entering the workplace or working longer hours. Average wages for men and women actually declined for the third consecutive year.

Funny how the headline and actual data are almost 180 degrees apart.

Men's room arrest reopens questions about Sen. Larry Craig
Topic: Current Events 6:21 pm EDT, Aug 28, 2007

In an interview on May 14, Craig told the Idaho Statesman he'd never engaged in sex with a man or solicited sex with a man. The Craig interview was the culmination of a Statesman investigation that began after a blogger accused Craig of homosexual sex in October. Over five months, the Statesman examined rumors about Craig dating to his college days and his 1982 pre-emptive denial that he had sex with underage congressional pages.

When it rains it pours doesn't it?
