"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt

Ms. Gustitus said: “He said he didn’t know if waterboarding is torture.” Mr. Giuliani said: “Well, I’m not sure it is either.
Oddly, the only people who aren't sure are the people running the government right now and the people running for the Republican nomination. The Cambodians have a museum exhibit marking it as one of the atrocities performed by the Khmer Rouge. When the President of the United States (and the candidates for the office) is accurately compared to Pol Pot, something is gravely wrong. Testimony that the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention planned to give yesterday to a Senate committee about the impact of climate change on health was significantly edited by the White House, according to two sources familiar with the documents. Specific scientific references to potential health risks were removed after Julie L. Gerberding submitted a draft of her prepared remarks to the White House Office of Management and Budget for review.

A principal architect of Iraq’s interim constitution, who resigned in August as one of the country’s top diplomats, has laid out a devastating critique of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the U.S. occupation, telling NBC News that, functionally, “there is no Iraqi government.”
But, but, we've turned the corner! The surge is working! The... We've seen this play before. The first time it was called Little Big Horn starring George Armstong Custer, the second Khartoom starring Chinese Gordon, and recently it was called Dien Bien Phu starring Henri Navarre. The reviews haven't come in yet but Petreaus has given a bravura performance so far. Ex-top envoy calls Iraqi government a failure - Conflict in Iraq - MSNBC.com |

In fact, prior to 2007, contributions to Rockefeller from company executives at AT&T and Verizon were mostly non-existent. But that changed around the same time that the companies began lobbying Congress to grant them retroactive immunity from lawsuits seeking billions for their alleged participation in secret, warrantless surveillance programs that targeted Americans.

"Gonzales should have stayed out of the leak investigation once it began to focus on potential witnesses against him. By overseeing it, Gonzales put himself in a position to hurt the careers and reputations of subordinates whose cooperation was needed in the separate investigation of him. They are likely to recognize this added vulnerability -- it's hard enough as it is to provide evidence against your boss -- which will in turn intimidate them from saying anything that invites retribution from Gonzales."

Turkey's parliament approved by a large majority on Wednesday a government request to allow troops to cross into northern Iraq to crush Kurdish rebels based there.
It's over. The second that Turkey actually crosses the border any hope of a good resolution in the Mid-East ends. The only area in Iraq that is currently not a shooting gallery is the Kurdish north. That will change with a Turkish incursion. The majority of US supplies currently come through Turkey, and with that move simply getting the food, fuel and bullets in turns into a train wreck. It also does something that has been on a back burner since 2003, it expands Iraq into a regional war. Welcome to Hell. Turkish parliament approves Iraq incursion request - Yahoo! News |

Bush was speaking a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has resisted Western pressure to toughen his stance over Iran's nuclear program, made clear on a visit to Tehran that Russia would not accept any military action against Iran.
This is getting ridiculous. Not that I have any special love for Iran, but from everything identifiable, they are holding up their end of non-proliferation. If we're that damn worried about it, we can set something up for standing watchdogs from IAEA at the Iranian nuclear sites. Of course, that's not the plan, the plan is to blow the crap out of Iran and start a holy war. Bush: Threat of World War III if Iran goes nuclear - Yahoo! News |

Some commentators say the PKK would benefit from a Turkish offensive into Iraq because Iraqi Kurds, whose ties with the PKK are uneasy, would see a common enemy in the invaders. Moreover, Turkey could isolate itself on the international stage by echoing, albeit in a limited way, the unpopular U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.
Gee, ya think Turkey invading the "safe" part of Iraq would screw things up even worse over there? Really? Turkey Takes Step Toward Iraq Operation |

Former Chief Executive Joseph Nacchio, convicted in April of 19 counts of insider trading, said the NSA approached Qwest more than six months before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, according to court documents unsealed in Denver this week. Details about the alleged NSA program have been redacted from the documents, but Nacchio's lawyer said last year that the NSA had approached the company about participating in a warrantless surveillance program to gather information about Americans' phone records.
So really, the wiretaps have NOTHING TO DO WITH 9/11. This is something they wanted and used that as their excuse to get it. Pre-9/11 wiretap bid is alleged - Los Angeles Times |
