] Among the many people quoted in the Atlantic is Jeffrey ] Record, a professor of strategy at the Army War College, ] who summed up a good deal of the thinking in Washington ] now: "Are we better off in basic security than before we ] invaded Iraq? The answer is no. An unnecessary war has ] consumed American Army and other ground resources, to the ] point where we have nothing left in the cupboard for ] another contingency -- for instance, should the North ] Koreans decide that with the Americans completely ] absorbed in Iraq, now is the time to do something." When the Army War College says one thing and the White House says the opposite, I think I'm going to have to go with the guys who have a clue. The Army. Yahoo! ] In a late Tuesday night court filing, the department told ] U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen it supports the Detroit ] defendants' request for a new trial and would no longer ] pursue terrorism charges against them. The defendants at ] most would only face fraud charges at a new trial. Now here's a strange case. For those who have been reading me in the past, they know I mentioned this case before, and there, the local prosecutors absolutely blasted the Justice Department for not only not providing help, but doing everything it seemed they could do to hinder the local office. What's next? Who knows. A better question might be, why did they drag their feet eartlier and are now trying to throw out what was done? This sure doesn't sound like the sort of thing we expect from the Ashcroft Justice Department so what's the ulterior motive behind tossing this one which was originally touted as a great case in the "War on Terror?" ] First lady Laura Bush, in a rare foray into foreign ] policy Tuesday, planned to present her husband as a ] commanding warrior against terrorism in a prime-time ] convention speech highlighting his leadership in "the ] most historic struggle my generation has ever known." Well I don't think anyone who has read me thinks I have any respect for the president, and they'd be right. This "warrior" is perfectly generous with other people's lives and money, and what she's talking about (the war on terror, ooooh, let's fight a concept) isn't all that. But she's right that we're looking at the most important struggle of my generation (not hers, that would be Vietnam, the cold war or Nixon's subversion of the democratic process, although shrub's version of that wasn't any better). Four more years of Shrub will probably be sufficient to throw this country into the kind of distopia that pops up in bad television and movies like Max Headroom, Freejack and Robocop. The Bush revolution is to have government intrude on a moral level, to spend so prolifigately that any ability the government might have had to do things to protect its citizens from others will be lost because they can't afford it. At the same time, the interest caused by that public debt will go towards funnelling more money and more power towards the same people who have been and will abuse it. Yahoo!
