"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ" --Gandhi

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt

"A little revolution, now and then, is a good thing." -Thomas Jefferson-

"In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in 12 years, we'll be voting for plants." -Lewis Black-

"When you're born in the world you're given a ticket to the freakshow; when you're born in America you're given a front-row seat. And some of us in the front row have notebooks and pencils." -George Carlin

It seems to me that whatever the limits put on her, the problems facing her inside and outside the newsroom will make it difficult for her to return to the paper as a reporter.

My interpretation? "See ya Judy. Try to not let the door hit you in the ass on the way out."

Tropical Storm ALPHA
Topic: Science 7:48 pm EDT, Oct 22, 2005

Biggest hurricane season ever. Three cat5 storms in a single year when there has never been ever a 4 and 5 in the same year. 200 cities with new record summer highs. The warmest fall on record.

Now, maybe some of that is improved storm tracking technology, but this is the kind of thing global warming predicts.

A US State Department official told Reuters this year: "I just cannot imagine how any US soldier can be subject to some kind of foreign proceeding for criminal liability when he is in a tank in a war zone as part of an international coalition."

Well, you can stop imagining it, Spain has made the request.

And yet after decades locked out of his home, the government told him he could never return unless he could prove the most obvious, yet least provable fact: that he was jailed because he was black.

I don't know what to really call this, it's just something that is important enough to link to.

They locked his cat in the attic for two days without food or water - you can still see the scratch marks on the door. "They thought I might be using the cat to spread plague," Kurtz explains.

They also confiscated his wife's body. Hope's ashes now sit on the mantelpiece in Kurtz's study. "They still have bits of her," Kurtz says.

Here it is, the "War on Terror" at work.

Stars & Stripes - VA under fire for plan to review all post-traumatic stress disorder claims
Topic: Current Events 1:13 am EDT, Oct 22, 2005

“To the VA, this is simply a process seeking out voids in paperwork,” said Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M, at a Thursday hearing on Capitol Hill. “But to veterans, it’s a jolting realization that their day-to-day struggles are being questioned again.”

And this is how the administration supports the troops. They have cut pay, screwed with veterans other benefits, run a back door draft via stop-loss, and I've previously noted some of the other things, like not providing what should have been issued equipment, blocked payments to families who purchased that equipment out of their own pocket, and tried to revoke payments to soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

With this kind of support, being put in harms way is criminal.

Michelle Pilecki: 'Editorials' a Chorus of One

Other versions in Indiana, North Carolina and California, drop the final graf, but the impression to most local readers is that this is the voice of their local newspaper. Actually, it's a corporate voice, Freedom Communications Inc, and was written by a former Bush I staffer and conservative scribe now the editorial page editor of the Freedom-owned Colorado Springs Gazette.

So was this done on his own or is this yet another of those positions taken "for hire?"

I wish we had dealt with the controversy over our coverage of WMD as soon as I became executive editor. At the time, we thought we had compelling reasons for kicking the issue down the road. The paper had just been through a major trauma, the Jayson Blair episode, and needed to regain its equilibrium. It felt somehow unsavory to begin a tenure by attacking our predecessors. I was trying to get my arms around a huge new job, appoint my team, get the paper fully back to normal, and I feared the WMD issue could become a crippling distraction.

FDA Asked to Require ED-Blindness Label
Topic: Health and Wellness 10:37 pm EDT, Oct 21, 2005

Public Citizen petitioned the
Food and Drug Administration Thursday to add black-box warnings to the labels of Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, as well as the hypertension drug Revatio, which is similar to Viagra.

A small number of people taking the impotence drugs have developed NAION, or non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy, a loss of vision that is frequently irreversible.

So it's now clear, mastubation doesn't cause blindness but Viagra can.
