"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ" --Gandhi

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt

"A little revolution, now and then, is a good thing." -Thomas Jefferson-

"In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in 12 years, we'll be voting for plants." -Lewis Black-

"When you're born in the world you're given a ticket to the freakshow; when you're born in America you're given a front-row seat. And some of us in the front row have notebooks and pencils." -George Carlin

Sharon Serious After Brain Surgery
Topic: Current Events 12:33 pm EST, Jan  5, 2006

Prime Minister Ariel Sharon fought for his life Thursday following seven hours of emergency surgery to stop widespread bleeding in his brain.

Bullshit. I hate how they phrase these things. If you got down the article farther they give the comment from the doctor that he is under "deep sedation" meaning he's out cold, possibly in a drug induced coma to give his body time to maybe heal itself some. Yep Terri Schiavo was "fighting for life" too.

You want to use that phrase, talk about Iraq, either our guys or the ones they're trying to blow up. They're fighting for their lives.

Lobbyist Is Said to Discuss Plea and Testimony - New York Times
Topic: Politics and Law 3:23 pm EST, Dec 21, 2005

Mr. Abramoff is believed to have extensive knowledge of what prosecutors suspect is a wider pattern of corruption among lawmakers and Congressional staff members. One participant in the case who insisted on anonymity because of the sensitivity of the negotiations described him as a "unique resource."

Let's make a deal...

Judge Rules Against Pa. Biology Curriculum

"I'm still waiting for a judge or anyone to show me anywhere in the Constitution where there's a separation of church and state," he said. "We didn't lose; we were robbed."

And this is why the fundies scare the crap out of me.

The Full Dover 'ID is Garbage' Judicial Opinion
Topic: Education 4:56 pm EST, Dec 20, 2005

As no evidence in the record indicates that any other scientific proposition’s validity rests on belief in God, nor is the Court aware of any such scientific propositions, Professor Behe’s assertion constitutes substantial evidence that in his view, as is commensurate with other prominent ID leaders, ID is a religious and not a scientific proposition.

Judge Jones takes the ID case and manages to rip it into little itty bitty pieces, which is easy to do in legalese, and then piss on the pieces, which is very hard to do in legalese. If you understand legalese, it's a masterpiece of damning insult.

Update: It's a damn long read but wow does he lambaste these guys.

Team officials say they are looking at fines, suspensions and other punishments. They can even be sent to jail for their heinous acts. So, what did this band of criminals do? Consensual sex with other adults! How dare they?!

Moral of the story? Don't charter.

Bush Defends Eavesdropping Program
Topic: Politics and Law 7:57 pm EST, Dec 19, 2005

Gonzales said that while FISA prohibits eavesdropping without court approval, it makes an exception where Congress "otherwise authorizes." That authorization, he said, was implicit in the authorization for the use of military force in Afghanistan following the Sept. 11 attacks.

If someone would like to explain how NSA doing wiretaps is use of military force, this argument would have a better chance of floating.

Survey Shows Unwanted Births Up
Topic: Current Events 7:43 pm EST, Dec 19, 2005

More American women are having babies they didn't want, a survey indicates, but federal researchers say they don't know if that means attitudes about abortion are changing.

This is something that people should look at. There are a couple of very interesting numbers that tell me something is very, very wrong. In 1995 it notes 26% of conceptions ended in abortion, and 9% of births were unwanted. In 2002, 24% of conceptions went via abortion, but 14% of births were unwanted.

The question is, does this show a shift in opinion, or exactly what? To answer that, I'd also want to see the general birth rate numbers and those aren't here. I would also want to see the numbers regionaly, or on a state by state basis, as well as by age groups, because that would also say a great deal.

In and of itself, the article is as useful as tits on a bull, but it points at more data to come which might have some cunclusions with it.

Bush Says NSA Surveillance Necessary, Legal
Topic: War on Terrorism 1:13 pm EST, Dec 19, 2005

On another issue, Bush acknowledged that a pre-war failure of American intelligence — claiming that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction — has complicated the United States' ability to confront other potential emerging threats such as
Iran.

"Where it is going to be most difficult to make the case is in the public arena," Bush said. "People will say, if we're trying to make the case on Iran, `Well, if the intelligence failed in Iraq, therefore, how can we trust the intelligence on Iran?'"

So what he's saying here is that he's planning to invade Iran? That's what it sounds like.
