CNN aired an interview with President Bush in which he declared that one day the Iraq war will look like "just a comma."
With well over 100,000 dead in Iraq already, the only way it's going to look like a "comma" is if something launches the death toll into the tens of millions. Battle Breaks Out in Media Over Bleak NIE Iraq Assessment |

"The people would not be able to establish that Mr. Karr committed this crime despite his repeated insistence that he did," District Attorney Mary Lacy said in court papers.
And what made them think he was anything other than a garden variety nutjob in the first place? I guess he got a free trip home from Bangkok out of the deal. JonBenet suspect won't be charged - Yahoo! News |

This year, he traveled to Louisiana and Mississippi four times between January and April. On Aug. 29, he plans to spend the anniversary of Katrina by making his 13th post-Katrina stop to the storm zone with a visit to New Orleans and Mississippi. One point the president is sure to make: Washington has already promised $110 billion for victims.
It's been a year, and New Orleans is still just as trashed as ever. After a year of promising all that money, where has it gone? I never thought I'd say this but Gingrich is at least half right when he says "from that point on, people just look at us and see `Brownie, you're doing a great job,' and they just think we're not in touch with reality." The part he got wrong in there is he implys that they are in touch with reality. The only time reality makes it through the White House Gate is when it kicks it in, and even then, the occupants find a way to ignore it. Katrina v. Bush |

A complaint announced today by the FBI alleges that through a company called HDTV Ltd. located in Brooklyn, Iqbal and others provided customers in the New York area with satellite broadcasts of al Manar, which is a television station owned and/or operated by Hezbollah. The Department of Treasury named al Manar as a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist entity" in March 2006, thereby making it a crime to, among other things, engage in business transactions with al Manar. In conjunction with the arrest, agents executed search warrants at both HDTV's Brooklyn office and Iqbal's Staten Island residence where, it is alleged, Iqbal maintained several satellite dishes.
Okay, so here's an interesting question. If he's paying Al Manar to distribute their signal, he's consorting with terrorists, but if he's not paying them, then he's stealing their signal and liable under FCC copyright issues? I'd be interested to see what he was doing, because I'm not seeing any way to square this with the first amendment. You can do time, place and manner restrictions, and you can't shout "Movie!" in a crowded firehouse or the like, but otherwise, speech may not be restricted. This one looks really ugly. The point of terrorism is to cause terror, sometimes to further a political goal and sometimes out of sheer hatred. The people terrorists kill are not the targets; they are collateral damage. And blowing up planes, trains, markets or buses is not the goal; those are just tactics. The real targets of terrorism are the rest of us: the billions of us who are not killed but are terrorized because of the killing. The real point of terrorism is not the act itself, but our reaction to the act. And we're doing exactly what the terrorists want.

"I'm pleased it's over and that it came out the way it did," a still-emotional Weidman said in the hallway outside the courtroom moments after the sentence was handed down. "But, it will always be a sore spot in everyone's life. I'm sorry for the families and their loses and sorrow."
Two counts of homicide and the guy gets probation and a little community service? I'll bet he's pleased it came out that way. Ex-Far West president gets probation |

Devall described her experience during an interview in her trailer, saying she wanted to get some help and to let others know what it’s like living there. But during the interview, a security guard knocked on the trailer door and ordered the reporter and photographer to leave “immediately.” “You are not allowed to be here,” the guard yelled. “Get out right now.” As they left, the guard refused to let the reporter give Devall a business card so she could contact the newspaper later by phone. “You will not give her a business card,” the guard said. “She’s not allowed to have that.”
WTF? I see things like this and don't wonder why people don't trust the government. Maybe they don't trust them because they're acting like prison guards? 2theadvocate.com | News | Hundreds of FEMA trailers stand empty |
