Groups Says Condom Limits Sap AIDS Fight
Topic: Current Events 12:31 pm EST, Dec  1, 2004

] "The Bush Administration is spending millions of dollars
] on abstinence-only programs that mislead people at risk
] of HIV/AIDS about the effectiveness of condoms," said
] Rebecca Schleifer, another Human Rights Watch researcher.
] "Exporting these programs to countries facing even more
] serious epidemics will only make the situation worse."

"AIDS? Isn't that the gay disease?" Thanks W...

Military Academy Admission Down
Topic: Current Events 2:22 pm EST, Nov 23, 2004

] But it's unclear whether a drawn out conflict will have
] an affect on military academies. While war can stir up
] patriotism and boost interest in military careers, the
] long, unpopular war in Vietnam was thought to have
] depressed application rates to West Point.
]
]
] "I really have seen it dwindle in the last year, and that
] to me is curious," Brenda Melton, a counselor at the
] Navarro Academy in San Antonio, said. "I think part of it
] is that the war is a major topic and they see people
] getting killed over there and not everyone is in
] agreement with it."

Curious, although not surprising.

Yahoo! News - White House: Debt Ceiling Must Be Raised
Topic: Current Events 6:45 pm EST, Nov  3, 2004

] The Bush administration announced Wednesday that it will
] run out of maneuvering room to manage the government's
] massive borrowing needs in two weeks, putting more
] pressure on Congress to raise the debt ceiling when it
] convenes for a special post-election session.

Lovely. Cut income taxes, cut corporate taxes, invent a "birth tax."

Black Box Voting: Ballot - Tampering in the 21st Century
Topic: Current Events 7:29 pm EST, Nov  1, 2004

] Will Doherty, executive director of the San
] Francisco-based Verified Voting Foundation, said despite
] Florida's assertion that the malfunctions of the laptops
] handling voter registrations were minor, his organisation
] is aware of dozens of voters who were turned away from
] the polls "because of that minor system crash". Doherty
] also said there have been multiple reports related to
] touch-screen calibration problems. Some voters have
] reported that when they touched the screen next to their
] candidate's name the screen highlighted the opposing
] candidate, according to Doherty.

Something that should be thought about with the nightmare starting tomorrow.

Ooops, I guess those missing explosives were there when the invasion happened.
Topic: Current Events 7:10 pm EDT, Oct 28, 2004

] A 5 Eyewitness News crew in Iraq may have been just a
] door away from materials that could be used to detonate
] nuclear weapons. The evidence is in videotape shot by
] Reporter Dean Staley and Photographer Joe Caffrey at or
] near the Al Qaqaa munitions facility.
]
]
] The video shows a cable locking a door shut. That cable
] is connected by a copper colored seal.

Well it looks like Saddam didn't make off with the explosives, and we don't have them, so I wonder where they might be...

Yahoo! News - UN: Iraqi Nuclear-Related Materials Have Vanished
Topic: Current Events 9:22 pm EDT, Oct 11, 2004

] Equipment and materials that could be used to make
] nuclear weapons are disappearing from Iraq (news - web
] sites) but neither Baghdad nor Washington appears to have
] noticed, the U.N. nuclear watchdog agency reported on
] Monday.

So we invaded to keep nuclear materials out of the hands of possible terrorists, but paid so little attention to what was going on that we may have handed over exactly that? Something about "sowing the wind" is jumping into my head and I really don't like it.

] The crumbling Iraqi capital - home to a quarter of
] the country's population - is so dangerous that even
] the location of the U.S. Embassy is kept secret.
]
]
] Open warfare has broken out a few blocks from the
] U.S.-controlled Green Zone, which is regularly pounded by
] insurgent mortar shells.

Mission Accomplished my ass.

] Homeland Security officials said Yusuf Islam %u2014
] formerly known as singer Cat Stevens %u2014 will be
] deported Wednesday after being denied entry to the U.S.
] for being on a government watch list.

Yep, let's deport the guy who does "Peace Train." He's a threat to the Bushies desire to blow other people up.

Bear guzzles 36 beers, passes out at campground
Topic: Current Events 12:37 pm EDT, Aug 20, 2004

] SEATTLE, Washington (Reuters) -- A black bear was found
] passed out at a campground in Washington state recently
] after guzzling down three dozen cans of a local beer, a
] campground worker said on Wednesday.
]
] "We noticed a bear sleeping on the common lawn and
] wondered what was going on until we discovered that there
] were a lot of beer cans lying around," said Lisa Broxson,
] a worker at the Baker Lake Resort, 80 miles (129 km)
] northeast of Seattle.
]
] The hard-drinking bear, estimated to be about two years
] old, broke into campers' coolers and, using his claws and
] teeth to open the cans, swilled down the suds.
]
] It turns out the bear was a bit of a beer sophisticate.
] He tried a mass-market Busch beer, but switched to
] Rainier Beer, a local ale, and stuck with it for his
] drinking binge.
]
] Wildlife agents chased the bear away, but it returned the
] next day, said Broxson.
]
] They set a trap using as bait some doughnuts, honey and
] two cans of Rainier Beer. It worked, and the bear was
] captured for relocation.

[ That is some funny shit. A little sad, but funny. -k]

Nice to see even bears think Busch sucks.

Yahoo! News - Poll: Many Still Link Iraq With WMD
Topic: Current Events 12:36 pm EDT, Aug 20, 2004

] More than half of Americans, 54 percent, continue to
] believe Iraq (news - web sites) had weapons of mass
] destruction or a program to develop them before the
] United States invaded last year, according to a poll
] released Friday.

I don't think this is what PT Barnum was thinking about when he said there's a sucker born every minute. Or, isn't national policy important enough not to base it on fooling the suckers?
