Aeiou : Kader Attia's Flying rats
Topic: Arts 11:22 am EDT, Oct 26, 2005

the visitors find themselves face to face with a birdcage containing 150 pigeons and 45 children made from moose mixed with compacted bird grain. In what seems to be a recreation courtyard, girls and boys play with marbles or squabble while the pigeons are slowly devouring them.

A disturbing way to view nostalgia for one's childhood, don't you think?

The Left Coaster: Uranium from Africa and the Senate (SSCI) Report: Part 3A-4 (Uraniumgate v2.0)
Topic: Current Events 9:11 am EDT, Oct 26, 2005

In this part we get to one of the most whitewashed aspects of the Senate Report - the forged Niger documents and the CIA/Bush administration narrative about it. (Note that all bold/highlighted text is my emphasis). Before I begin, I'd like to acknowledge some research done by reader Pat Conway (I cite his work in Sections 4.2 and 4.3 below). Also, because of the length of this post, I am providing soft-links to the different sections to make for easier reading. Please click on any of the links to start reading.

TinyDisk - An anonymous shared file system on top of TinyURL.
Topic: Technology 3:19 pm EDT, Oct 25, 2005

TinyDisk is a program from saving and retrieving files from TinyURL and TinyURL-like services such as Nanourl. It overlays a write-once-read-many anonymous, persistent and globally shared filesystem. Once something is uploaded, only the database admin can delete it. Everyone can read it. No one can know who created it. Think of it as a magical CD-R that gets burned and placed on a network.

This is a file system I demoed at Phreaknic that runs on top of the link shortening service TinyURL. Its the perfect case study of how to write meaningful extensions on top of existing web applications, which was the topic of my presentation.

I've already uploaded some fun stuff into TinyURL, like The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and even TinyDisk itself. Thats right, the program to read and write to TinyURL is stored inside TinyURL! It was also very cool to see other people starting to use it.

TinyDisk is a good hack.

La Repubblica's Scoop, Confirmed via American Prospect
Topic: Current Events 2:12 pm EDT, Oct 25, 2005

In an explosive series of articles appearing this week in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, investigative reporters Carlo Bonini and Giuseppe d'Avanzo report that Nicolo Pollari, chief of Italy's military intelligence service, known as Sismi, brought the Niger yellowcake story directly to the White House after his insistent overtures had been rejected by the Central Intelligence Agency in 2001 and 2002. Sismi had reported to the CIA on October 15, 2001, that Iraq had sought yellowcake in Niger, a report it also plied on British intelligence, creating an echo that the Niger forgeries themselves purported to amplify before they were exposed as a hoax.

Another piece of the puzzle in the case against the White House?

The White House cabal - Los Angeles Times
Topic: Current Events 11:48 am EDT, Oct 25, 2005

Its insular and secret workings were efficient and swift — not unlike the decision-making one would associate more with a dictatorship than a democracy. This furtive process was camouflaged neatly by the dysfunction and inefficiency of the formal decision-making process, where decisions, if they were reached at all, had to wend their way through the bureaucracy, with its dissenters, obstructionists and "guardians of the turf."

Lawrence Wilkerson spells it out for the American Public(tm) the way that his former boss (Colin Powell) never will. Must Read

echoplex: high bias
Topic: Arts 12:09 pm EDT, Oct 12, 2005

in fact, it can be argued that simply by having the focus of one genre (electronic OR rock OR experimental OR hip-hop), any number of publications automatically turn their "focus" into bias. because good music is not often made in a complete vacuum, artists may be influenced by sounds outside their genre (or subgenre in some cases). those same artists can be unjustly lauded or ignored for their efforts. either the narrowminded publication dislikes the"impure" influences shown by the mostly status-quo music, or the artist is raised to the level of genius simply by looking outside their own backyard.

An excellent rant...
