After a four-year investigation, students at the University of Illinois have determined the identity of Deep Throat, the most elusive, anonymous news source in history: Fred Fielding, deputy counsel to former President Richard Nixon ? not Patrick Buchanan, as speculated in a Dateline NBC report last year.

At a news conference at the Watergate Hotel, Gaines and two students from his spring 2002 class, Thomas Rybarczyk and Kelly Soderlund, identified Fred Fielding as "Deep Throat."

Fielding, a lawyer, was first assistant to John Dean, chief counsel to President Richard Nixon, at a time of the Watergate break-in in 1972.

Brian Moriarty | Lectures | The Secret Of Psalm 46 (2002)
Topic: Technology 10:08 pm EDT, Apr  9, 2003

] The Secret Of Psalm 46 was first presented on 23 March 2002
] at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose,
] California. It was accompanied by a digital video of a
] total solar eclipse, synchronized to a harpsichord
] recording of JS Bach's Art Of Fugue.

Brian Moriarty is a brilliantly-gifted speaker (and a heck of a game designer). This talk that he gave at GDC 2002 was a work of art. Inspiring, moving, and thought-provoking, and I will never forget it. I'm glad that a transcript is on the web, though I don't think that reading this can even come close to the "performance art" that was the talk itself.

I'm also meme-ing this because he spoke of some codes and messages hidden in music. If you're interested in cryptography, or conspiracies, or the history of the game industry, this is worth a read.

US Marines turn fire on civilians at the bridge of death
Topic: Current Events 8:26 pm EST, Mar 31, 2003

THE light was a strange yellowy grey and the wind was coming up, the
beginnings of a sandstorm. The silence felt almost eerie after a night of
shooting so intense it hurt the eardrums and shattered the nerves. My
footsteps felt heavy on the hot, dusty asphalt as I walked slowly towards
the bridge at Nasiriya. A horrific scene lay ahead.

Support the Warrior Not the War: Give Them Their Benefits!
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:53 am EST, Mar 31, 2003

The House of Representatives have recently voted on the 2004 budget which will cut funding for veteran's health care and benefit programs by nearly $25 billion over the next ten years. It narrowly passed by a vote of 215 to 212, and came just a day after Congress passed a resolution to "Support Our Troops." How exactly does this vote support our troops? Does leaving our current and future veterans veterans without access to health care and compensation qualify as supporting them?

The Veteran's Administration, plagued by recent budget cuts, has had to resort to charging new veterans entering into its system a yearly fee of $250 in order for them to receive treatment. It is a sad irony that the very people being sent to fight the war are going to have to pay to treat the effects of it.
