A Secure and Verifiable Voting System
Topic: Technology 1:57 pm EST, Nov 26, 2003

] The cryptographer David Chaum, through discussion with
] top cryptographers such as Ron Rivest, has designed a secure and
] verifiable voting system.

This is an excellent paper. I think it pretty obvious that the
secure virtual receipt has applications far beyond voting systems.

High-tech project aims to make super-soldiers
Topic: Technology 3:28 pm EDT, May 23, 2003

] It was once the stuff of science fiction movies: soldiers
] equipped with high-tech gear that made them stronger,
] swifter and smarter %u2014 invulnerable to bullets and
] able to survive the harshest conditions.
]
] On Thursday, the U.S. Army and the Massachusetts
] Institute of Technology unveiled a joint project that
] generals and scientists said could make fiction a reality
] within this decade.
]
] The new Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies at MIT
] will use a five-year, $50 million grant from the Army to
] develop tiny machines that are the size of molecules to
] give U.S. military personnel an edge on the battlefield.
]
] Some of the ideas being explored include battle suits
] that are embedded with tiny devices that can seal against
] chemical attack, administer immediate medical care and
] even %u2014 no joke, scientists say %u2014 give soldiers
] the power to leap small buildings.

I ***NEED*** some of those pants! :D

A nice little piece by Cory Doctorow, even if it is
archival and a little dated. Here's an excerpt which --while not really representative-- I found to be keenly observant.

| Take eBay: every seller there has a damned good reason for
| double-checking their listings for typos and misspellings. Try
| searching for "plam" on eBay. Right now, that turns up nine typoed
| listings for "Plam Pilots." Misspelled listings don't show up in
| correctly-spelled searches and hence garner fewer bids and lower
| sale-prices. You can almost always get a bargain on a Plam Pilot at
| eBay.

MSR Netscan - Usenet Social Accounting Search Engine

Netscan is a research project of Microsoft's where they map
Usenet. They don't look inside any message bodies. They don't care
WHAT you say, but they care about the patterns of how people
participate in Usenet newsgroups.

New Release

| New for 2002 is the lighter-weight version of our T-Shirt Launcher
| with better performance. This unit is much easier to use and very
| quick for reloads. With the quick disconnect barrel, it's easy to have
| several loaded barrels and quickly exchange them for rapid successive
| launches. Load soft items for 160' and be ready to launch again in
| seconds. One aluminum 5 lb. Tank can launch up to 25 times in just
| minutes. And the new lower price makes this a powerful new tool that's
| available and in stock today.
`----

Ok, I saw this on slashdot, so shoot me. I just can't resist. This
is too cool. I think that it's time to design a belt-fed rapid fire
model. Can we target the prototype at, say, 60 rpm? Something like
this:

Subversion: The Definitive Guide
Topic: Technology 6:34 pm EST, Apr  4, 2003

Here is an excellently written technical reference for
the subversion version control system. Aside from
the fact that subversion is cool, this book is notable
for it's presentation and style. I would have it that
more technical references were written in this manner.

| Roogle is a search engine for what is called a
| "RSS Feed". An RSS Feed is an XML tagged file
| which allows a website, news site or blog
| (actually any site) to provide to the world a
| list of its current contents. RSS feeds can
| contain all kinds of information from news to
| blog / weblog posts to stock quotes and more
`----

I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but here is a search engine which searches RSS feeds. Nice.
