] Your Credit: Personal Information goes public Starting
] July 1st, 2003, the four major credit bureaus in the US
] (Equifax, etc.) will be allowed to release credit info,
] mailing addresses, phone numbers, etc., to ANYONE who
] requests it. If you do not want to be included in this
] release of your personal information, you can call
] 1-888-567-8688. Once the message starts you will want
] option #2 (even though option #1 refers to this email,
] push #2) and listen to the message. Then select the
] option to permanently remove your name.
]
] Be sure to listen closely, the first option is only for a
] two-year period. Make sure you wait until they prompt for
] the option, which opts you out FOREVER. You should
] receive their paperwork in the mail confirming the
] "opting out" in less than one week after making the call.

| Though President Bush declared an end to major combat operations in
| Iraq on May 1, scattered combat actions in the country continue, as
| evidenced by recent hostile-fire deaths, according to the commanding
| general of U.S. forces in Iraq. Lt. Gen. David McKiernan, commander of
| Coalition Joint Task Force-7, said during a Baghdad press conference
| that attacks on U.S. Soldiers are not criminal activities, but acts of
| combat, and they will be addressed with every means at the
| U.S. forces' disposal. MORE

Our prez is not exactly in step with what's real. Again.

| Good morning. Just a second while I get this connection
| to work. Do I press this button here? Function-F7? No,
| that's not right. Hmmm. Maybe I'll have to reboot. Hold
| on a minute. Um, my name is Abe Lincoln and I'm your
| president. While we're waiting, I want to thank Judge
| David Wills, chairman of the committee supervising the
| dedication of the Gettysburg cemetery. It's great to be
| here, Dave, and you and the committee are doing a great
| job. Gee, sometimes this new technology does have
| glitches, but we couldn't live without it, could we? Oh
| - is it ready? OK, here we go:

High-tech project aims to make super-soldiers
Topic: Technology 3:28 pm EDT, May 23, 2003

] It was once the stuff of science fiction movies: soldiers
] equipped with high-tech gear that made them stronger,
] swifter and smarter %u2014 invulnerable to bullets and
] able to survive the harshest conditions.
]
] On Thursday, the U.S. Army and the Massachusetts
] Institute of Technology unveiled a joint project that
] generals and scientists said could make fiction a reality
] within this decade.
]
] The new Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies at MIT
] will use a five-year, $50 million grant from the Army to
] develop tiny machines that are the size of molecules to
] give U.S. military personnel an edge on the battlefield.
]
] Some of the ideas being explored include battle suits
] that are embedded with tiny devices that can seal against
] chemical attack, administer immediate medical care and
] even %u2014 no joke, scientists say %u2014 give soldiers
] the power to leap small buildings.

I ***NEED*** some of those pants! :D

A nice little piece by Cory Doctorow, even if it is
archival and a little dated. Here's an excerpt which --while not really representative-- I found to be keenly observant.

| Take eBay: every seller there has a damned good reason for
| double-checking their listings for typos and misspellings. Try
| searching for "plam" on eBay. Right now, that turns up nine typoed
| listings for "Plam Pilots." Misspelled listings don't show up in
| correctly-spelled searches and hence garner fewer bids and lower
| sale-prices. You can almost always get a bargain on a Plam Pilot at
| eBay.
