IHT: Americans are wrong to vilify the French
Topic: Society 11:31 am EDT, Sep 22, 2003

An interesting article about France's relation to the current international scene...

in particular, this :

] France's policy is not determined by a desire to counter the
] Americans, but by a deep-seated mistrust, inspired by French
] history, of any excessive concentration of international power.

I don't know enough about French history and politics to *know* that this is true, but it seems right, and sounds reasonable to me...

$87 Billion War Request Details Spending (washingtonpost.com)
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:12 am EDT, Sep 22, 2003

Oy. we sure are screwed.

Of particular interest is this analysis...

] Rep. David R. Obey (Wis.), the ranking Democrat on the
] Appropriations Committee, issued a report showing how
] much the administration would pay to meet Iraqis' needs
] compared with Americans'. The budget proposal allocates
] $157 per Iraqi for sewage improvements, compared with $14
] per American, for example. The administration is devoting
] $38 per Iraqi for hospitals, compared with $3.30 per
] American.
]
]
] Bush's "vision for Iraq is precisely opposite his vision
] for the United States," Obey said. "We also need to have
] a balance in the budgets between what we're doing abroad
] and what we're doing here at home."

Makes you think.

Daily Kos: Trying to hide bad news, povery and income report released Friday
Topic: Current Events 11:08 am EDT, Sep 22, 2003

] For the past 15 years, the Census Bureau has always
] released the [statistics and poverty] report on a Tuesday
] or Thursday. This year, in order to mask the bad news buried
] within the report, the report will be released on a Friday.

Hmmm. Well, our current government is doing such a good job, i'll bet the Poverty and Income report is all roses anyway...

] Air Traffic Control
]
]
] Speaking of contracting out, an administration move to
] privatize air traffic control at 69 airports has sparked
] opposition from labor groups, which contend it would
] compromise safety.
]
]
] The administration had proposed 71 airports, but House
] Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Don
] Young (R-Alaska), who supports the effort, got someone to
] strike the two Alaska airports on the list.
]
]
] Young, on an Alaska cable TV show a week ago,
] acknowledged the move generated some heat.
]
]
] "Of course the criticism of myself," he said, "is that I
] exempted the state of Alaska." But there were ample
] reasons for that, he said, ticking off a number of them.
]
]
] "Lastly," Young said, "my hotel room is on the top floor
] of the Sheraton, and the airplanes take right off towards
] my hotel room. Every morning I look out and there's one
] coming right at me. It's an interesting experience and I
] want to make sure everything is done right in that
] field."

Great. So it's ok that the airports the rest of us use could be incompetently staffed.

Anti-cancer drug aproved for FDA fast tracking
Topic: Science 9:50 am EDT, Sep 22, 2003

] Advexin is an ingenious drug that uses a disabled virus (one that
] causes the common cold, in fact) to deliver a gene called p53 to
] tumor cells. When this gene is mutated, cells can start dividing
] uncontrollably and turning into tumor cells. Advexin delivers a
] normal copy of p53 to tumor cells in order to restore order to the
] cells.

cool...
