With the exception of the hyper-philosophical stuff at the beginning, this guy wrote damn near the exact paper i've been meaning to write for months. Kudos to him. It's long, but so far (3/4 through) very very worthwhile, if only because he actually found (and then typed) the words i was searching for. New Modes of Musicianship... |

] Commentator Rush Limbaugh resigned Wednesday night from ] ESPN's Sunday NFL Countdown amid a firestorm that erupted ] over the controversial statements he made this past ] weekend about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan ] McNabb. ] ] Later Wednesday, the National Enquirer and New York Daily ] News reported that Limbaugh was under investigation in ] Florida for illegally buying and abusing prescription ] painkillers. LMAO!!! ] "My comments this past Sunday were directed at the media ] and were not racially motivated. I offered an opinion," ] Limbaugh said in a statement released by ESPN. "This ] opinion has caused discomfort to the crew, which I ] regret. ] ] "I love NFL Sunday Countdown and do not want to be a ] distraction ... Therefore, I have decided to resign," he ] said. ] ] "We accept his resignation and regret the circumstances ] surrounding this," said George Bodenheimer, president of ] ESPN and ABC Sports. ] ] Limbaugh said Sunday that McNabb received undeserved ] credit for his team's success that came from media ] outlets with "social concern" and "very desirous that a ] black quarterback do well." Who the hell at ESPN woke up one day and decided "Ya know, America isn't subjected to enough of this blow-hard on the airwaves as it is. Lets expand his soap box and make him a sports commentator." ] MOST electric vehicles work by connecting the wheels to a ] motor. But tomorrow a Dutch company plans to unveil a bus ] in which motor and wheel are one, a refinement that ] promises more miles per charge and a vehicle that is ] safer and easier to maintain. I always thought this would be smart, though i was never convinced of the economic advantage. you sure better not smack into a curb too hard, b/c that's gonna be one expensive wheel replacement. still, sounds nice, and eliminating all those gears is probably good. Building on the paper poseted yesterday... This is what i've been predicting for a couple of years now. As musicians start to be able to make high quality records on cheap equipment, the need for huge labels will decrease rapidly. the majors make bubble gum mass market crap for the most part, and exist to promote it, but they're ancillary to the process. If they vanished, the marketing would happen anyway, by the coolhunters at MTV and so on. at which point a viable method for individual artists (i.e. no label affiliation necessary) and indie labels to sell music electronically, and cheaply, increases the exposure people get to new music substantially. when your production costs are low, you can sell for less and make more, and make a living as a musician, rather than try to play the rock star game.
