God Hates Shrimp
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:26 am EST, Mar  2, 2004

] Shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, mussels, all these are an
] abomination before the Lord, just as gays are an
] abomination. Why stop at protesting gay marriage? Bring
] all of God's law unto the heathens and the sodomites.

[ Drawing attention to stupid fundamentalists is funny. -k]

Aristide Tells U.S. Contacts He Was Abducted
Topic: Current Events 4:52 pm EST, Mar  1, 2004

] Jean-Bertrand Aristide, ousted as Haitian president on
] Sunday, told U.S. lawmakers and other contacts by
] telephone on Monday that he was abducted by U.S. soldiers
] and left his homeland against his will.
]
] Washington immediately denied this, saying Aristide had
] agreed to step down and leave his country. "It's complete
] nonsense," White House spokesman Scott McClellan told
] reporters.
]
] "We took steps to protect Mr. Aristide, we took steps to
] protect his family and they departed Haiti. It was Mr
] Aristide's decision to resign," he said.
]
] U.S. officials said that after intensive consultation
] between U.S. officials and Aristide on Saturday, he had
] signed a letter of resignation.

[ Hm. One wonders how much of that "consultation" involved the U.S. saying "So, um, sign this fucking letter, now." I can't say i know enough about Aristide or Haiti to know if it was good or bad for him to leave, but i certainly don't want to be lied to about it, either way. -k]

Report Raises Questions About Fighting Online Piracy
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:44 pm EST, Mar  1, 2004

] [T]he entertainment industry's pursuit of tough new laws to
] protect copyrighted materials from online piracy is bad
] for business and for the economy, according to a report
] being released today by the Committee for Economic
] Development, a Washington policy group that has its roots
] in the business world.

[ Following on the heels of Greenspan's speech regarding the need to re-assess IP law in the context of an increasing ratio of the GDP being based upon non-physical product -- here's one such re-assessment. Or a little piece of an overall reassessment anyhow. It's nice to see some of the more venerable mainstream organizations picking up this argument... -k]

New Twists on the Milky Way's Big Black Hole
Topic: Science 4:21 pm EST, Mar  1, 2004

] The supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky
] Way Galaxy is heftier than thought and rotates at an
] amazing clip, new research shows.
]
] For years scientists said the black hole contained about
] 2.6 million times the mass of the Sun. They now believe
] the figure is somewhere between 3.2 million and 4 million
] solar masses.
]
] And a new study suggests all that mass, confined to an
] area about 10 times smaller than Earth's orbit around the
] Sun, spins around about once every 11 minutes.

[ Damn... that's some serious angular momentum... -k]

] An Israeli fashion house plans to shoot its summer
] catalog at Israel's West Bank security barrier this week,
] the company said Monday, less than a week after troops
] shot dead two Palestinians protesting the network of
] walls, wire and ditches.
]
] A statement from the fashion house, Comme-il-faut, said
] the one-day shoot Wednesday would take place at a section
] of the barrier on the edge of Jerusalem "for the purpose
] of creating a dialogue around boundaries."

[ Intresting way to draw attention to some ideological concepts (not to mention get some good publicity)... i just hope no one dies. -k]

] Cancer in teenagers and young adults has risen to become
] the most common cause of natural death for their age, but
] not enough research is being done into its causes or
] treatment, health experts said Monday.
]
] Cancer among 13-24 year olds is still rare, with about
] 1,500 new cases diagnosed each year in Britain.
]...
] Rates of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer,
] have almost doubled over 21 years in the 20-24 age group
] in Britain and it now accounts for one in 10 of all cancers.

[ Cancer sucks. Can we please get rid of it? -k]

] will be impossible to achieve," a North Korean schoolgirl
] says to Bartelsman.

Mr. Greenspan's Warning
Topic: Economics 11:42 pm EST, Feb 27, 2004

] Under questioning, he acknowledged that Congress was
] unlikely to solve the deficit problem solely by cutting
] spending and would inevitably have to raise some taxes to
] keep deficits manageable. We took his testimony to mean
] that long-term deficit reduction is more important than
] permanent tax cuts. The White House, alas, is taking the
] opposite approach. It wants the tax cuts locked in before
] it provides any serious plan for how to restrain future
] deficits.

[ The White House exercises some seriously selective hearing. All the time. -k]

] Sens. John Kerry and John Edwards, Rep. Dennis Kucinich
] of Ohio and the Rev. Al Sharpton, a New York civil rights
] activist, will meet Thursday in Los Angeles in a debate
] sponsored by CNN and the Los Angeles Times.

[ I almost forgot -- there's another debate tonight. It might be worth watching, even if only peripherally. Could Edwards upset the polls again? If kerry sucks and edwards shines tonight, maybe...

Looks like GA may go edwards after all -- it's tight and keeps getting closer. I Haven't decided if i'll help him or not. -k]
