] An analysis by the UK Met Office shows that the effects ] of global warming will be much more intense in urban ] areas, where vehicles and buildings heat the air and ] asphalt and concrete retain heat at night. [ Not a lot of surprise here, but it's a topic which deserves enhanced currency. I think it's long past time to start looking seriously at ways to alleviate the heat island effect, dissipate more of that ambient energy, or harness it for some other use. I should probably rephrase that... I know there are people working on such problems... what they need is funding, and legislative support for emplacing their developments. -k] Cities will swelter on summer nights |

] Weapons that can incapacitate crowds of people by ] sweeping a lightning-like beam of electricity across them ] are being readied for sale to military and police forces ] in the US and Europe. [ Mixed feelings. I respect the desire for law enforcement to have viable riot control technology, but I'm also very much concerned about indiscriminate weaponry. I'm not so worried about safety... I'm sure a device of this class can be developed that's as non-lethal as the Tazer, so that's fine. What bothers me is the blanket approach to pacification. Just doesn't sit very well... -k] Sweeping stun guns to target crowds |

Grassroots journalists are dismantling Big Media's monopoly on the news, transforming it from a lecture to a conversation. At its core, We the Media is a book about people. Give the people tools to make the news, We the Media asserts, and they will. The book casts light on the future of journalism and invites us all to be part of it. We the Media |

Of all the ways Mr. Bush persuaded Americans to back the invasion of Iraq last year, the most plainly dishonest was his effort to link his war of choice with the battle against terrorists worldwide. This is not just a matter of the president's diminishing credibility, although that's disturbing enough. The Plain Truth |
