Cities will swelter on summer nights
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:18 am EDT, Jun 17, 2004

] An analysis by the UK Met Office shows that the effects
] of global warming will be much more intense in urban
] areas, where vehicles and buildings heat the air and
] asphalt and concrete retain heat at night.

[ Not a lot of surprise here, but it's a topic which deserves enhanced currency. I think it's long past time to start looking seriously at ways to alleviate the heat island effect, dissipate more of that ambient energy, or harness it for some other use. I should probably rephrase that... I know there are people working on such problems... what they need is funding, and legislative support for emplacing their developments. -k]

Sweeping stun guns to target crowds
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:14 am EDT, Jun 17, 2004

] Weapons that can incapacitate crowds of people by
] sweeping a lightning-like beam of electricity across them
] are being readied for sale to military and police forces
] in the US and Europe.

[ Mixed feelings. I respect the desire for law enforcement to have viable riot control technology, but I'm also very much concerned about indiscriminate weaponry. I'm not so worried about safety... I'm sure a device of this class can be developed that's as non-lethal as the Tazer, so that's fine. What bothers me is the blanket approach to pacification. Just doesn't sit very well... -k]

We the Media
Topic: Media 11:03 am EDT, Jun 17, 2004

Grassroots journalists are dismantling Big Media's monopoly on the news, transforming it from a lecture to a conversation.

At its core, We the Media is a book about people.

Give the people tools to make the news, We the Media asserts, and they will. The book casts light on the future of journalism and invites us all to be part of it.

The Plain Truth
Topic: War on Terrorism 11:02 am EDT, Jun 17, 2004

Of all the ways Mr. Bush persuaded Americans to back the invasion of Iraq last year, the most plainly dishonest was his effort to link his war of choice with the battle against terrorists worldwide.

This is not just a matter of the president's diminishing credibility, although that's disturbing enough.

The Way of the Master
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:36 pm EDT, Jun 16, 2004

Teen hearthrop Kirk Cameron has turned Christian preacher. No, it's not a parody site. Reality is much stranger than fiction.

[ Remember, "Don't let your loved ones go to hell without trying to save them." Ugh. -k]

UK Considers RFID License Plates
Topic: Miscellaneous 3:38 pm EDT, Jun 16, 2004

] The system, of course, would allow speed checking sensors
] and other mechanisms to identify which cars were
] traveling at what speeds -- up to 200mph from up to 300
] feet away.

Tycho on City of Heroes
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:15 pm EDT, Jun 16, 2004

] Has the entire Goddamn universe become snared by the
] siren song of City of Heroes? Everywhere I look, monitors
] glow with bobbing superhero ass. I played it, and it was
] great at what it did - Diablo plus Unprecedented
] Character Creation. I declared it inoffensive and moved
] on. And now, I'd say eighty percent of my friends can't
] pry themselves from that superteat.

[ No one beats PA for telling it like it is, that's for sure... i love those guys. -k]

A Short History of Nearly Everything wins Aventis Prize
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:33 pm EDT, Jun 15, 2004

] A book by travel writer Bill Bryson, which explains the
] origins of everything scooped the Aventis Science Book
] Prize on Monday night. A Short History of Nearly
] Everything, was awarded the prize by Lord Robert May,
] President of the Royal Society and Dirk Oldenburg, chair
] of the Aventis Foundation, at London's Royal Society.

[ I haven't had the chance to read this yet, but I know Ryan really liked it... i may well pick it up one of these days. It's quite something by all accounts... -k]

Symantec Security Response - EPOC.Cabir
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:44 am EDT, Jun 15, 2004

] EPOC.Cabir is a proof-of-concept worm that replicates on
] Nokia Series 60 phones. It repeatedly sends itself to the
] first Bluetooth-enabled device that it can find,
] regardless of the type of device (ie even a
] Bluetooth-enabled printer will be attacked if it is
] within range).

[ This one seems pretty passive, but I suspect the next ones will not be... -k]
