"You will learn who your daddy is, that's for sure, but mostly, Ann, you will just shut the fuck up." -Henry Rollins

TPM : Hastert defames Soros?
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:48 pm EDT, Sep  1, 2004

] "Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert - having already
] enraged some New Yorkers with his remarks about local
] office-holders' "unseemly scramble" for federal money
] after 9/11 - yesterday opened a second front. On "Fox
] News Sunday," the Illinois Republican insinuated that
] billionaire financier George Soros, who's funding an
] independent media campaign to dislodge President Bush, is
] getting his big bucks from shady sources. "You know, I
] don't know where George Soros gets his money. I don't
] know where - if it comes overseas or from drug groups or
] where it comes from,"
Hastert mused. An astonished Chris
] Wallace asked: "Excuse me?" The Speaker went on: "Well,
] that's what he's been for a number years - George Soros
] has been for legalizing drugs in this country. So, I
] mean, he's got a lot of ancillary interests out there."

] Wallace: "You think he may be getting money from the drug
] cartel?" Hastert: "I'm saying I don't know where groups -
] could be people who support this type of thing. I'm
] saying we don't know."

[ Are you fucking KIDDING ME? I don't KNOW where my roommate gets his money. He SAYS he goes to work and writes computer programs, but I don't KNOW that... Maybe, maybe he's WHORING down on West Peachtree, or, maybe he's assasinating leaders of Hamas, i just DON'T KNOW. Crimony, is this fuck serious? (bold mine, btw)

For the record, Soros was none too pleased, sending a letter to Mr. Hastert which is none-too-subtle in it's intent : http://talkingpointsmemo.com/docs/soros.hastert.pdf -k

UPDATE: This (http://www.hillnews.com/news/090104/soros.aspx) page from today quotes an entirely unapologetic spokesman for the Speaker :

' John Feehery, a spokesman for Hastert, said, “George Soros has an agenda. He supports the legalization of drugs, and the statement stands. [Hastert] has been fighting Soros on this for years because it is a character flaw. The Speaker thinks legalizing drugs is wrong." '

UPDATE 2 : They had a different comment to Forbes (http://www.forbes.com/2004/09/01/cz_mm_0901soros1.html):

"Of course the Speaker doesn't think he gets money from drug cartels," says Hastert's press secretary, John Feehery.

What a bunch of assholes. -k]

Breast Cancer Cure?
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:47 am EDT, Sep  1, 2004

Researchers from Canada believe they have identified the gene responsible for breast cancer tumor growth, a discovery that could possibly lead to a cure for the disease.

When the gene was removed from the mice, breast development was not affected, however, when the gene was removed from already growing tumors, the tumors ceased to grow.

[ God bless them if so. Fuck a bunch of cancer. -k]

MSNBC poll offered two 'choices,' both assuming support for Bush-Cheney
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:46 am EDT, Sep  1, 2004

On August 31, the morning after former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani addressed the Republican National Convention, MSNBC.com's "Question of the Day" offered only two possible answers -- both assuming that participants support the Bush-Cheney '04 ticket.

The poll question asked: "Did Rudy Giuliani's speech reassure you or move you to support the Bush-Cheney ticket?" The two response choices were: (1) "Reassure"; and (2) "Move you to support."

Reality become like an Onion joke.

Actress Theron hurt on Germany film set
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:43 am EDT, Sep  1, 2004

] Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron was injured while
] shooting her new Paramount film, "Aeon Flux," in Germany,
] but her representatives aren't saying how badly she was
] hurt.
]
] Theron suffered the unspecified injury while doing her
] own stunts in a wire-hanging action sequence, the movie's
] publicist, Jeanmarie Carrasco, told The Associated Press
] Tuesday.
]
] "No cuts, no broken bones," Carrasco said. "I think it
] was something less tangible than that. ... Something
] vague and nagging."

[ That sucks that she was hurt, but dude, they're making a live action Aeon Flux movie?!?! Holy crap! -k]

] We tend to think the media should be reticent to delve
] into the personal lives of office holders, particularly
] when issues of public policy are not at issue. But in
] this case, the press seems to have dropped the ball.
] Schrock, after all, has been, up until now, seeking
] political gain by parroting rhetoric and proposing
] legislation that many consider at odds with his personal
] choices. When a congressman resigns in the face of his
] own apparent hypocrisy, that's news. (Note to CNN: It
] might be even more important than what Jack Cafferty had
] for breakfast this morning.)

Topic: Miscellaneous 5:44 pm EDT, Aug 31, 2004

] "The Justice Department has issued a subpoena seeking IP
] logs from Calyx, the ISP for nyc.indymedia.org, after
] individuals posted [1 | 2 | 3] the names, addresses, and
] phone numbers of some of the RNC delegates. The subpoena
] was issued as part of an ongoing investigation of voter
] intimidation. As reported earlier in this Slashdot
] article, the Justice Department tried this before. Calyx,

Multiple Intelligence Test
Topic: Society 5:41 pm EDT, Aug 31, 2004

This is the adult version of a test we give children in school to figure out how they learn best thus telling us how to be more effective teachers. So if you are interested take the test and see what it has to say about your learning style. This is all based on Gardner and his theory of multiple intellegences. (he recently added 1 that deals with technology)

[ Hmm... I got

Linguistic: 7
Logical-Mathematical: 8
Spatial: 3
Bodily-Kinesthetic: 6
Musical: 11
Interpersonal: 5
Intrapersonal: 9

I'd be interested to see what the description is of "spatial" since I've always considered myself quite good at things like spatial translation and ability to position myself in surroundings, directions, etc.

As for my highest score being musical, I find that very interesting since, while i love music, I've never considered it a prime vocational candidate. Either I'm very wrong about myself, or this test doesn't adequately differentiate someone who really loves to listen to music and someone who really wants to create music.

Other than that, it's ok, though I'd have guessed the linguistic number to be a bit higher. -k]

Guardian Unlimited | US elections 2004 | President admits war on terror cannot be won
Topic: Politics and Law 10:34 pm EDT, Aug 30, 2004

1. Bush is right. You cannot win the war on terror any better then you can win the war on drugs.
2. People do not understand that and do not want to hear it.
3. Edwards is intentionally taking his statement out of context. Nothing about saying you can't "win" the war on terror admits defeat in the war on terror. Its not binary.
4. People will believe Edwards.

[ What Bush said *is* correct, but Edwards didn't take it out of context :

] "We have a clear vision on how to win the war on terror
] and bring peace to the world."
]
] -- George W. Bush
] July 30th 2004.

I think Edwards is being silly. Your comparison to the war on drugs is appropo. Still, I don't think Bush knows what the fuck he's talking about either. -k]
