Mr. Bush and the Truth About Terror |

] President Bush was absolutely right when he said it was ] impossible to win a war against terrorism - it's like ] announcing we can win a war against violence. Terrorism ] can only be minimized and controlled, and that can be ] done only with a worldwide strategy, joined by all of the ] world's sensible and peaceful nations. We hope that when ] Mr. Bush accepts his party's nomination for re-election ] tonight, he makes that argument. ] ] ] The chances of a serious dialogue about terror took a ] blow, of course, when Mr. Bush retracted his completely ] sensible statement about terrorism after the ] Kerry-Edwards campaign attacked it. So far, this has been ] an election season of monumental simple-mindedness, in ] which the candidates start each day by telling us this is ] the most important election in the history of the planet, ] then devote the rest of their waking hours to meaningless ] sniping. But it's certainly not too late to elevate the ] conversation. Mr. Bush and the Truth About Terror |

] "We want to bombard (the Republican sites) with so much ] traffic that nobody can get in," said CrimethInc, a ] member of the so-called Black Hat Hackers Bloc. It's one ] of several groups planning to distribute software tools ] to reload Republican sites over and over again. These ] FloodNet programs are similar to hackers' distributed ] denial-of-service attacks, which overwhelm a server with ] thousands and thousands of simultaneous requests for ] information. [ These fucksticks again?! Jesus, would someone please deny them their first amendment rights? The article notes that jackass from HOPE too. I feel like JK needs to get on this now, come out strongly against this shit, and call for proscecuting these morons the same way you would any other DDoS attacker. Because if some shit happens, you can bet the wingers will do everything they can to tie such shenanigans directly to the kerry campaign. Take two minutes now to avoid an ugly news cycle later. -k] Wired News: Hackers Take Aim at GOP |

Remember the name Barack Obama. You'll be hearing it a lot as this election season unfolds. "There's a certain tone in politics that I aspire to, that allows me to disagree with people without being disagreeable." In a political era saturated with cynicism and deceit, Mr. Obama is asking voters to believe him when he talks about the values and verities that so many politicians have lied about for so long. He's asking, in effect, for a leap of political faith. So far, at least, the voters of Illinois seem to be responding. Mr. Obama's effort to connect in a more than superficial way with people across ethnic, economic and geographic lines should serve as a template for future campaigns in both parties. ] Diebold Election Services Inc. president Bob ] Urosevich admitted this and more, and apologized "for any ] embarrassment." ] ] "We were caught. We apologize for that," Urosevich said ] of the mass failures of devices needed to call up digital ] ballots. Poll-workers in Alameda and San Diego counties ] hadn't been trained on ways around their failure, and San ] Diego County chose not to supply polls with backup paper ] ballots, crippling the largest rollout of e-voting in the ] nation on March 2. Unknown thousands of voters were ] turned away at the polls. ] ] "We're sorry for the inconvenience of the voters," ] Urosevich said. ] ] "Weren't they actually disenfranchised?" asked Tony ] Miller, chief counsel to the state's elections division. ] ] After a moment, Urosevich agreed: "Yes, sir." [ DOMINO MOTHERFUCKERS! Decertify the fuck out of them ALL. Put these negligent fucks out of work, and banish them from the industry. We should all send copies of this article to the Elections Division here in Georgia. (bold mine) -k] Diebold apologizes for device flaws |

Plastic: Nader Calls Upon Bush To Leave Presidential Race |

Upset that the maverick run of Republican Presidential candidate (and incumbent President) George W. Bush could lead to a victory by John Kerry, Ralph Nader called upon Bush to cease splitting the anti-Kerry vote and drop out of the race. I like Nader. [ Me too. Just not enough to vote for him again. Not more than I dislike Bush. I'm not naive enough anymore to believe that principle is the only thing i should use to guide my choices. Voting for the best (most like me in principle), and ending up with the worst (Bush) is *not* better than voting for second best and getting it. No one will ever successfully use the "The lesser of two evil's is still evil," argument on me again -- it may be true, but it's a poor way to choose a president. "Less evil" wins over "Not evil but not really a competitor" from now on. Now that I've ranted, i'm going with that story being a joke, what with the dateline, and the fact that the links within it are to counterstrike servers and CBS Sportsline and so on. What's scary is that it actually sounds like something Nader would say. -k] Plastic: Nader Calls Upon Bush To Leave Presidential Race |

Think You Voted in Maryland? Think Again |

Last Tuesday I went to the polls ... The good news is that there were no lines. The bad news is that the touch-screen voting machines don't always work. ... I persevered long enough to persuade the technician on duty to check my machine. The technician confirmed that the machine was not presenting whole election contests. "Once you've pressed 'cast my vote,' that's it. You can't vote again. ... You should have complained before you pressed the button." [ Jesus... how much more bullshit shenanigans do we need before some action gets taken. Seriously absurd. -k] Think You Voted in Maryland? Think Again |

Okay, *this* is what I was looking for! I've been searching high and low on the web so that I could meme it. [ these are sorta interesting, if only as a corroboration and reminder of the issues. On the Political Philosophy I come out as a populist-leaning liberal, which is pretty tough to argue with, so they did well there. The presidency 2004 quiz made me a 50% match with Ralph Nader (which makes sense) in the number one spot, followed by Mosely-Braun and Gephardt. Dean is pretty far down the list, which indicates, i guess, that my support for him is based on factors other than strong philosophical alignment. In a perfect world, for K.R.B., someone like Moseley-Braun would be viable, but political realities have to adjust idealism somewhat... exactly how much to compromise idealism for electability is the tough question. Unsurprisingly, Lieberman is 3rd from last, right above Cheney and Bush. ]-k VoteMatch Quizzes |
