Well, I just want to inform the community that I will sadly *not* be attending PhreakNIC this year. This is a startling discovery for me, as I have not missed a single PN except for PN 1. I will be attending another conference with my boss, and it is a pretty big deal that I get to go, so there is no way around it. But I will see you all at PN 10 for the great return of the nanochick. [ that sUX! i think i'm coming this year... assuming the package delivery mechanisms are in effect... hehe. -k] Teh suck |

Second Life is a virtual world - a 3D online persistent space totally created and evolved by its users. Within this vast and rapidly expanding place, you can do, create or become just about anything you can imagine.
Interesting idea... I've come across this a few times and always thought it was very cool, but that i don't have enought time to really pursue it... i like the concept. sort of a small step towards the Metaverse, i guess. Second Life: Basic Overview |

U.S. Lowers Sights On What Can Be Achieved in Iraq |

The Bush administration is significantly lowering expectations of what can be achieved in Iraq, recognizing that the United States will have to settle for far less progress than originally envisioned during the transition due to end in four months, according to U.S. officials in Washington and Baghdad. The United States no longer expects to see a model new democracy, a self-supporting oil industry or a society in which the majority of people are free from serious security or economic challenges, U.S. officials say. "What we expected to achieve was never realistic given the timetable or what unfolded on the ground," said a senior official involved in policy since the 2003 invasion. "We are in a process of absorbing the factors of the situation we're in and shedding the unreality that dominated at the beginning."
That's fucking great! I mean, you know, all the dead people probably don't agree, but dude, it'll all be worth it later when they no longer live under Saddamn *or* US guns. Total fucking anarchy will be much better for the people... I mean, anarchy is a form of freedom, right? U.S. Lowers Sights On What Can Be Achieved in Iraq |

A 43-year-old man was cited Tuesday for painting a sign that reads "Die you miserable bitch" on a house he owns, Pasco County sheriff's deputies said. A neighbor dying of cancer, 73-year-old Carol Hastrich, is believed by her family to be the subject of the message, deputies said. The words were spray-painted in black on the side of the house facing Hastrich's front yard. But it was not the meaning of the message that led to Derick Cooper's citation. Deputies told Hastrich's family the message did not violate any laws, her daughter Dea Albertson said Wednesday.

The other day while I was working in the yard my son urgently called to me. "Dad, a praying mantis caught a hummingbird!"
Awesome! The mantis totally speared a hummingbird and then ate it. Praying Mantis Eats Hummingbird (Bird Watcher's Digest) |

For the foodies out there, check out Noriko Takiguchi's (so far) five part series on 'How to Eat Sushi Properly' (links to earlier parts at bottom of the linked post). Not only does the series deliver on the title, but she also passes along tidbits such as the history of our epicurean debt to Yohei Hanaya, and the names of the best sushiyas in the Bay Area, with a little assist from commenters.
quite good. -k Due Diligence: Theory and Practice of Sushi |
