On what time scale does it become worth considering whether or not we can actually afford to construct every new human genome that's going to come into existence, and we can de-couple the designs of human beings from the natural constraints of direct descent and replication with error? My sense is that technology will support this well in advance of our ability to have any conversation around the consequences of using the technology.

#xkcd has had about 250 chatters these days. Large communities suck. This problem is hard to solve, but we’ve come up with a fun attack on it — enforced originality (in a very narrow sense). My friend zigdon and I have put together an auto-moderation system in an experimental channel, #xkcd-signal, and it seems to work well, so we invite you all to take part.
Very interesting... forced originality. I'm very curious to see the long term results. xkcd » Blog Archive » ROBOT9000 and #xkcd-signal: Attacking Noise in Chat |

Udy, a British citizen, said the agent told her he had "a security concern" with her. "I was basically given the option of handing over my laptop or not getting on that flight," she said.
Oh my god, FUCK that. No more international flights with computers folks. Unless you want your shit gone through. My laptop is infinitely more sensitive and private than my underwear and shit in my bag. There is a zero percent chance I'm letting some fucking guy go through it without a warrant. If this becomes a common practice for domestic flights, commerce will grind to a halt. Beyond that though, I just won't travel anymore. What complete horseshit. Flash haters will hate this, but Adobe's managed to create a pretty full featured web-based word processor, presumably to compete with Google Docs. No spreadsheets or presentations yet, and of course, none of the integration that makes Google products so attractive. Still, it appears both snappier, prettier, and more functional (for one thing, lists and tables work a LOT better) than Google Docs. Since Word for the Mac is such a giant steaming pile, this is might be a compelling alternative for me. Buzzword |

The best newspaper in the universe. How it works : 1. You find something you want to read, but you don't have time now. You click . 2. When you have time to read, you come here on your computer or phone and get whatever you wanted to read.
Awesome. I love it. Instapaper |
