] An analysis by the UK Met Office shows that the effects ] of global warming will be much more intense in urban ] areas, where vehicles and buildings heat the air and ] asphalt and concrete retain heat at night. [ Not a lot of surprise here, but it's a topic which deserves enhanced currency. I think it's long past time to start looking seriously at ways to alleviate the heat island effect, dissipate more of that ambient energy, or harness it for some other use. I should probably rephrase that... I know there are people working on such problems... what they need is funding, and legislative support for emplacing their developments. -k] Cities will swelter on summer nights |

] Weapons that can incapacitate crowds of people by ] sweeping a lightning-like beam of electricity across them ] are being readied for sale to military and police forces ] in the US and Europe. [ Mixed feelings. I respect the desire for law enforcement to have viable riot control technology, but I'm also very much concerned about indiscriminate weaponry. I'm not so worried about safety... I'm sure a device of this class can be developed that's as non-lethal as the Tazer, so that's fine. What bothers me is the blanket approach to pacification. Just doesn't sit very well... -k] Sweeping stun guns to target crowds |

] Has the entire Goddamn universe become snared by the ] siren song of City of Heroes? Everywhere I look, monitors ] glow with bobbing superhero ass. I played it, and it was ] great at what it did - Diablo plus Unprecedented ] Character Creation. I declared it inoffensive and moved ] on.
