Technology Review: Solar-Cell Rollout
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:47 am EDT, Jul 15, 2004

] Konarka's technology is just one example of a new type of
] printable solar cell, or photovoltaic, that promises to
] go almost anywhere, paving the way for affordable and
] ubiquitous solar power. Not only are the cells
] inexpensive to produce-less than half the cost of
] conventional panels, for the same amount of power-but
] they're also lightweight and flexible, so they can be
] built into all sorts of surfaces.

[ I've noticed this meme pop up a few times recently... i think it will prove to have legs over the longer term. I've said before that i think solar power will offer the best solution to our future needs... towards the end of this article, they indicate that Richard Smalley is of the same opinion, which is a little gratifying. I just hope gov't and industry is willing to devote the requisite billions... -k]

] Hawking will present his latest finding at a conference
] in Ireland next week.

[ This should prove *very* interesting... -k]

] Mr. Wolf said that Apple's music products had become
] something of a Trojan horse for the company as the
] popularity of the iTunes service and the iPod are clearly
] helping sell Macs. "The Apple Macintosh is starting to be
] a growth story," he said. "Music is starting to drive Mac
] sales."

[ Hooray for Apple! Big wins this quarter! -k]

Boing Boing: Tolkien estate claims trademark for
Topic: Miscellaneous 7:11 pm EDT, Jul 14, 2004

] The Tolkien estate and Warners have sent out a lawyergram
] to the owner of shiremail.com, arguing that the word
] "Shire" belongs to them. The Register traces over 1,000
] years of usage of the word "Shire" in England, and
] enumerates many towns with the word "shire" in their
] names across the English countryside.

[ I'd like for the heirs of great authors to shut the fuck up for the most part. This just strikes me as unreasoning greed... -k]
