Mustang Fever, All Over Again
Topic: Cars and Trucks 9:48 pm EST, Nov 12, 2004

"The first time I saw it, I knew I had to have it."

"The wait hasn't killed me yet, but it's getting close."

A colleague of mine rented one this week. It looks quite nice. He said it was definitely turning a lot of heads on the freeways.

Drifting: The Fast Art of the Controlled Slide
Topic: Cars and Trucks 12:20 pm EDT, May  8, 2004

... a rather graphic display of the motor sport phenomenon called drifting. Originating in Japan over a decade ago, drifting was first practiced illegally on treacherous mountain roads. The drifter's goal was, and is, to put the car into controlled slides, maintaining speed and angle of attack through the curves. Unlike races, drifting competitions are judged events, and winning takes a combination of speed, angle and excitement. With the addition of synchronized tandem or "battle" drifting -- the main event at Laguna Seca -- the stakes, and risks, increase sharply.

"At any point you can crash," he said. "There's a big risk, and that's the biggest thrill of it."

"It's phenomenal that there's an organized act of driving cars like you stole them. This is a sanctioned version of what every idiot high school kid has done in a parking lot."

From the New York car show, check out photos of the Pontiac Solstice, the Ford Shelby Cobra concept, and the new Ford Mustang.

What rival designers are saying about the Solstice:

"We all liked it when we saw it as a concept. Then we saw the real one and thought that's even better."

"It really stands out."

"It's a very high-quality little two-seat roadster."

"It's elegant. It has pizazz."

"It's very, very beautiful and quite elegant."

Driving: Couture in Las Vegas: A Fashion Show for Cars
Topic: Cars and Trucks 7:16 pm EST, Nov  9, 2003

By replacing the springs and shocks with air struts and adding a small computer and an air compressor, Bridgestone says its new Praxis system will let you ride comfortably to the track.

Flick a switch inside the car, and the air struts lower the car and stiffen the suspension. Step out and adjust the dampers on each strut for track driving, and you're ready to hug the curves. The Praxis system is now available only for the Subaru WRX, popular with car customizers, but will be available on other cars starting next year.

Reeves Callaway builds one of the fastest and most exclusive cars in the world, the 188-mile-per-hour Callaway C12. Never seen one? It's not surprising; only 26 of them exist.

2002 BMW M3 SMG
Topic: Cars and Trucks 12:01 pm EDT, Jul 20, 2002

"I hope you're not taking a car with a stick shift on vacation." ... "No, It's a new M3 convertible, and there's no clutch."

Technically, I was fibbing. The M3 SMG has a manual transmission and a clutch, although there is no clutch pedal.

This highly sophisticated gearbox should not be confused with the many variations on the Tiptronic theme.

No, BMW's SMG (for sequential manual gearbox) is similar to the Magneti Marelli system used in Ferraris, Maseratis and the Aston Martin Vanquish. But BMW's version has a twist: a Drivelogic button below the shifter lets you select how quick you want the shifts to be, from leisurely to rocket racer (as fast as eight one-hundredths of a second).

At first I found myself missing the clutch pedal, but after rolling up some miles and experimenting with the six available shift programs, I became a convert.

Three young women of college age paused on the patio to comment on the titanium silver car parked top-down across the street. "Isn't it an M3?" one asked. To which a preppy young man at a nearby table, chimed in: "Does it have the SMG transmission? That is just so cool."
