The Vulnerability Assessment and Mitigation (VAM) methodology helps to think beyond known vulnerabilities and head off surprise attacks.

Too much information
Topic: Human Computer Interaction 11:09 pm EST, Dec 10, 2003

Despite having more information at our fingertips than any generation before, there is little evidence that our ability to make good, timely decisions has improved.

"We are in a time when people can sit in front of the screen and get bombarded with facts and sometimes that's confused for education. But I think that what we owe it to our young people to do is to help them ask questions."

Delivered Into Hell by US War on Terror
Topic: War on Terrorism 11:06 pm EST, Dec 10, 2003

I recently spent 10 1/2 months in a grave-sized cell in Syria, unsure why I was there, unsure how to get out. Fear paralyzed my wits when I needed them most. I was beaten and I was tortured and I was constantly scared. Every day I worried that I would never be released, that I would disappear into that concrete grave forever.

Why was I being held? I still don't really know.

What questions are you asking?

8th Annual MediaWise Video Game Report Card
Topic: Video Games 2:22 am EST, Dec 10, 2003

As video games become more engaging and popular, concerns about their impact on youth become more urgent. The concerns fall into two categories:

1. The easy access that boys have to increasingly ultra-violent M-rated games and the popularity of the most violent games with that group.

2. The growing issue of screen time as it relates to the obesity epidemic.

For the past eight years, we have consistently expressed concern about a subset of ultra-violent games. Last year we focused attention on the top selling Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, in which gratuitous violence toward women and police is rewarded and discrimination against the Haitian community is encouraged.

Oh, I disagree. The violence in Vice City is completely tuitous.

Steve Jobs: The Rolling Stone Interview
Topic: Macintosh 1:24 am EST, Dec 10, 2003

He changed the computer industry. Now he's after the music business.

"The world needs more smart editorial these days."

"We told the record companies the music subscription services they were pushing were going to fail. People don't want to buy their music as a subscription."

"[Getting music online] is such a compelling way to get music. It's instant gratification."

"But who knows? This is all new territory."

Somebody needs to tell Steve about MemeStreams.

I'm not a professional futurist, but I would offer that, historically, "because we've always done it that way" is an unsuccessful long-term strategy.

I don't know if companies can turn a profit on a music subscription service, but I must say that they can be very compelling for the end user.

I count myself among the critics that have been won over by Rhapsody.

Call me Jeremy. "network Jeremy".

Google for telecom industry memes. Also, consider: Cogent Conviviality. Channeling Propellerheads. Or "Damn McDonalds for creating so many fast food nations!" Or "All Your Singles Are Hits To Us". Ask Google: got silk memes?

And of course, you have to like the fact that "don't hate the media, become the media" returns MemeStreams at the top of a list of more than 5,800.

The Lesson of Iraq
Topic: History 10:01 am EST, Dec  8, 2003

The problems of the Middle East will be with us for the foreseeable future. They are primarily the responsibility of the peoples of the area, but they also affect us closely.

What is it that we have really lost in Iraq? This question does not admit of easy answers, partly because we never decided what was our essential aim there.

William Polk discussed America's response to a recent coup d'état in Iraq in the December 1958 issue of The Atlantic Monthly.

Seeing the Futures
Topic: Society 9:47 am EST, Dec  8, 2003

In an increasingly decentralized world, in which previously insignificant actors and factors can play a decisive role, strategic planning can leave decision-makers flat-footed.

In its unidimensional reliance on a single future, strategic planning hardens the "official future" agencies internalize, and thus prepares them poorly for appreciating rapid changes in circumstance and for making agile adaptations.

The idea is not so much to predict the future as to consider the forces that will push the future along different paths, in order to help leaders recognize new possibilities, assess new threats and make decisions that reach much further into the future.

From The Simpsons - 'Today I Am A Klown'
Topic: Humor 2:15 am EST, Dec  8, 2003

The jabs continue ...

Homer fills in as a guest host for Krusty's television show. Homer's show adopts a "Politically Incorrect" format, and with Homer's guests from the neighborhood, the show becomes a hit. Krusty's show is cancelled, but he strikes a deal with Fox to broadcast his bar mitzvah. The live audience cheers for Krusty as the show comes to an end and Krusty exits the stage.

Off stage, the Fox producer approaches Krusty, smiling and holding a piece of paper. In a soft, serious voice, he says, "Krusty, the ratings were good -- Raymond re-run good."

Boob-Tube End Times
Topic: TV 1:26 am EST, Dec  8, 2003

These days I watch less TV than I used to. Though I still watch too much. But I've concluded that one of the reasons I watch less TV is because TV simply isn't as good as it used to be.

Nielsen Media Research and the networks are screaming at each other over Nielsen's contention that young men are suddenly not watching TV. The networks blame the numbers. Nielsen blames the programming (and the rise in the popularity of video games and the Internet, among other things). I'm with Nielsen.

... In effect, kids today are living off the entertainment capital of the previous generation.
