Ticking away the moments that make up the dull day You fritter and waste the hours in an off hand way Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town Waiting for someone or something to show you the way Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today And then one day you find that ten years have got behind you No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun And you run and run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking And racing around to come up behind you again The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older Shorter of breath and one day closer to death Every year is getting shorter, never seem to find the time Plans that either come to naught or a half page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone the song is over, thought I'd something more to say |

Modern technology is creating a whole new generation of conspiracy theories ... The nation is rushing to adopt electronic voting, but there is a disturbing amount of evidence that, at least in its current form, it is overly vulnerable to electoral mischief. ... "patches" ... "It's not the voting that's democracy, it's the counting." 1, 2, skip a few, 99, 100. One for you, a few for me. Is that about right? Which of the following does not fit: (a) Election (b) Vote (c) Patch (d) Ballot Which version of Diebold Democracy is running your election? Making Votes Count |

It is frustrating to hear people harping about the need for more training and better education. Here's a news flash: because of the diverse knowledge base of each field of engineering and science, more education and training usually means a college degree in another field. How in the world is someone who has to support a family going to go to college while still having enough money to pay the rent and feed the family? Meet the mirror, and ask yourself who is "harping." If the future doesn't fit, create one that does. What do they say about necessity? "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children." "The truth is you're the weak. And I'm the tyranny of evil men. But I'm tryin', Ringo. I'm tryin' real hard to be a shepherd." Jobs, From Bangor to Bangalore |

Is Biotechnology Losing Its Nerve? |

Many biotechnology companies appear to be taking fewer chances lately -- to the point that the industry seems to have lost its nerve. More and more start-ups now seem focused on scrounging around ... "There's a fair question: Where's all the new stuff going on?" As big pharmaceutical companies have become even larger, they have concentrated on drugs with blockbuster potential rather than devote time to drugs with smaller markets. [Hmmm ... Where have I heard that story before?] I bet Norah Jones is popular at biotech firms, both as inspiration and as consolation. Is Biotechnology Losing Its Nerve? |

Next Sunday, after a hiatus of 15 months, "The Sopranos" returns to HBO for its fifth season. Woo hoo! Lock and load! David Chase: "Network television is all talk ... a prisoner of dialogue and steady-cam." "I can tell you: to have to cut something to 42 minutes for an hour show is absurd. It's despicable. I'm amazed that we Americans put up with this." "Television is at the base of a lot of our problems. It trivializes everything." "I'm tired of television. I'm tired of the form." "Once you get into the flow of things, you're always haunted by the way that things could have turned out. This outcome, that conclusion. You get my drift. The uncertainty is what holds the story together, and that's what I'm going to talk about." DJ Spooky delivers a manifesto for rhythm science -- the creation of art from the flow of patterns in sound and culture, "the changing same." Larry Lessig: "Rhythm Science is science; it is art; it is the story of how freedom would build better science and art." Rhythm Science |

The aim of this Report of the Task Force on Science, Technology and Innovation for the United Nations Millennium Project is to outline approaches for the effective application of science, technology and innovation (STI) to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) adopted by the 2000 United Nations Millennium Summit. The MDGs have become the international standard of reference for measuring and tracking improvements in the human condition in developing countries. The welfare of these countries is also intricately intertwined with the security of the industrialized countries, making development a truly global venture. Could there be laws governing complex systems? Advances will require the right kinds of tools coupled with the right kind of intuition. However, the current engineering courses do not teach about self-organization, and few cover computer modelling experiments. Despite significant recent advances in our understanding of complex systems, the field is still in flux, and there is still is a lack of consensus as to where the centre is -- for some, it is exclusively cellular automata; for others it is networks. However, the landscape is bubbling with activity, and now is the time to get involved. Cowboy Up. Engineering complex systems | Nature |
