Despite intense media coverage of this document, almost no one seems to be providing the full text. Agonist to the rescue! Minor transcription errors suggest the text has been retyped from a document sent by facsimile to media outlets. This would explain why so few are as yet offering the full text. [UPDATE: Reuters is now providing the full text (but not the accompanying Fact Sheet) at http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=4797260 if you'd prefer. MSNBC is providing a copy at http://msnbc.msn.com/id/4710772/ as well. You'll find the fact sheet at http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/04/20040410-5.html as an "official" copy.] (Intro by Reuters) At the demand of the 9/11 commission, the White House made public on Saturday a classified intelligence document from a month before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks that told President Bush of al Qaeda plans to attack the United States with explosives or hijack airplanes. The page and a half memo is entitled "Bin Laden Determined to Strike Inside the United States." The copy of the PDB that has been released is a copy of the PDB prepared for the President, except that three redactions have been made to protect the names of foreign governments that provided information to CIA. "I'm in serious shit here. We are expecting to be overrun tonight and we may have to fight our way to a safe haven. Unfortunately all the safe havens are already under attack. I don't wish to alarm you. We'll probably be OK. I'll e-mail when I'm safe." -- Michael Bloss, 38, killed while working as a security guard at the town of Hit, near Fallujah |

Confronting the 'Enemy Within' |

Since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, critics have charged that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, while qualified to investigate terrorist incidents after the fact, is not well equipped enough to adequately gather and assess information to prevent attacks. More intrinsically, many believe that given a predominant and deeply rooted law enforcement and prosecutorial culture, the bureau may not be able to change operational focus toward dedicated counterterrorism intelligence gathering and analysis. To better inform debate, researchers analyzed the domestic security structures of four allied countries -- the United Kingdom, France, Canada, and Australia -- weighing both their positive and negative aspects. Very cool. "A better mousetrap" is very apropos. Sure beats 'locate'. Quicksilver is an evolving framework for accessing and manipulating many forms of personal data. Existing modules include a launcher, a clipboard recorder, and a shelf. Rattle wrote: This is a truly awesome launcher app for OSX. Using keywords you type in, it launches a dynamic menu for picking to launch apps, open documents, visit bookmarks, etc. It's that much less you have to take your hands off the keyboard. This may be the latest must have app for OSX. I continue to be very pleased with the overall evolution of OSX as a workstation platform. Ooh, ooh, ooh What a little moonlight can do Quicksilver |

Next month Blackwater will host the World SWAT Challenge -- an Olympic-style competition among 20 SWAT teams from around the country -- set to be broadcast on ESPN. "Those Blackwater guys, they drive around wearing Oakley sunglasses ... They are a subculture." Thou shalt not raise private armies. Sadr, do as I say, not as I do. Lessig begs to differ, saying that [the copyright holders'] way of framing the debate -- as being just between those who favor property rights on one side and those who choose piracy on the other -- excludes the middle ground. Yet another hollowing out of the middle ... Lessig asserts that over time, more and more people will opt to pay for music subscription services. I couldn't agree (and hope) more. The National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (also known as the 9-11 Commission) heard public testimony from Dr. Condoleezza Rice, Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, April 8, 2004 in Washington, DC. You can watch her public testimony in streaming RealVideo at rtsp://cspanrm.fplive.net/cspan/archive/ter/ter040804_condi2.rm It's approximately three hours in duration. The commission also announced today: April 8, 2004 -- The 9-11 Commission today met in closed private session with former President Clinton. The meeting was held at the Commissions request and lasted for more than three hours. The Commission found the former President forthcoming and responsive to its questions. We appreciate the excellent cooperation he and his associates have given to us. Is there such a thing as criticism by reverse proxy? Testimony of Condoleeza Rice before the 9-11 Commission [PDF] |
