Networks and Netwars: The Future of Terror, Crime, and Militancy |

"The fight for the future is not between the armies of leading states, nor are its weapons those of traditional armed forces. Rather, the combatants come from bomb-making terrorist groups like Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda, or drug smuggling cartels like those in Colombia and Mexico. On the positive side are civil-society activists fighting for the environment, democracy and human rights. What all have in common is that they operate in small, dispersed units that can deploy anywhere, anytime to penetrate and disrupt. They all feature network forms of organization, doctrine, strategy, and technology attuned to the information age. And, from the Intifadah to the drug war, they are proving very hard to beat." Just published on October 16. Printed copies not yet available in stores, but you can download the text in PDF. The authors recently published a related article in First Monday. "This collection contains movies that the Prelinger Archives has digitized (about 956 now online) and donated to the Internet Archive. The films focus mainly on everyday life, culture, industry, and institutions in North America in the 20th century. This is the first time that most of the films have been available to the public. They are available for viewing at no cost and with few restrictions. About 956 films are now online." Be sure to check out all of the San Francisco films, including the "riotous celebrations" which took place on V-J Day. Very high-quality products here; not your average postage-stamp movie trailer. "Guerrilla News Network (GNN) is proud to present a series of heretofore classified videos created by video jam gurus Emergency Broadcast Network (E.B.N.). These videos, never publicly released, were leaked to GNN by a former high-level E.B.N. official, Joshua Pearson." [...] Recently [...] founder Joshua Pearson created a suite of videos about the 2000 elections in the traditional E.B.N. style... these videos, called OTV News, are now viewable at Oddcast.com. Currently, Pearson is working on special projects with GNN co-founder Josh Shore. EBN - The Lost Tapes |

"Storydata.com is a data analysis portal. In many cases, the news of the day is based on one or two statistics gleaned from a complex institutional database. Just as hypertext allows anyone with Internet access to link to source documents that shape current events, Storydata.com allows anyone with Internet access not just to link to, but get more insight out of the data that affects our world." Note that this site is a working advert for software firm Databeacon. However, the data are well presented and definitely worth a look. Requires a Java-capable browser.
