"It is not simply a matter of a bad organization. The FBI is a law-enforcement agency, not an intelligence outfit." Thank you, thank you, thank you. I have been waiting for months to see these words in print. If the American people want an internal security bureau, let them have it, but don't let this duct-tape and chewing gum approach to crisis management destroy the FBI in the process. Spying at Home |

Despite mounting pressure from outside directors, bankers and others aimed at forcing the Rigas family to resign from the board of Adelphia Communications, the family is strongly resisting giving up its five seats. The family is still stonewalling the SEC, and if this sufficiently irritates Nasdaq, this company is toast. Upon delisting, the bondholders will come swooping down on them. The author of this article claims that the bondholders are unlikely to press the issue, though. Rigas Family Said to Resist Leaving Board of Adelphia |

Death of a Paleontologist |

Perhaps the only person who was really prepared for Stephen Jay Gould's death was Mr. Gould himself. His scientific colleagues found him almost as brilliant as his popular audience did, but considerably more exasperating as well. A man with so many opinions is bound, pretty often, to be wrong, but Mr. Gould could be just as entertaining when he was wrong as when he was right. From today's NYT editorial page. I ask: Are you looking for your growth in undersea African markets? Does this sound like a reasonable short-term business plan? This is a lengthy, in-depth article with lots of quotes from the latest shareholders meeting. Corvis, waiting for the pickup |

Stephen Jay Gould, a famed evolutionary biologist and prolific author who influenced his field for decades, died Monday. He was 60. Gould died of cancer at his home in New York City. It is a sad day for science. And given his failing health, I am all the more impressed with his recent publication of a mammoth 1464 page treatise on evolutionary theory. Enron and Global Crossing used a complex deal brokered by a third company to sidestep accounting rules in a March 2001 transaction that was designed to help Global Crossing disguise a loan and allow each company to book revenue. ...
