Drowning in data?

New visualization techniques could help. Philip Ball discovers, among other things, how to plot a seven-dimensional graph.

Oh, yeah. Welcome to the future. How tame of Spielberg to limit the visual content on computer displays in "Minority Report" to a measly four dimensions.

Rudy Rucker should be impressed.

Pest Control: Caffeine as a repellent for slugs and snails
Topic: Science 11:11 am EDT, Jul  4, 2002

At high concentrations this stimulant becomes a lethal neurotoxin to garden pests.

We have discovered that solutions of caffeine are effective in killing or repelling slugs and snails ... Because caffeine is a natural product, it has potential as an environmentally acceptable alternative toxicant for the control of slugs and snails on food crops.

Here's the Nature paper. Subscription required.

Killer Java

Do you feel like a slug until you have had that first cup of coffee in the morning?

With luck, you don't. For a jolt of caffeine is enough to kill a slug, apparently.

... Researchers say they do not know how caffeine kills slugs and snails, but that it appears to work as a neurotoxin, as slugs sprayed directly with caffeine display uncoordinated writhing, kind of like somebody who has had one too many double espressos.

KPNQwest begins network shutdown
Topic: Economics 10:54 am EDT, Jul  4, 2002

KPNQwest, the bankrupt Dutch telecommunications group, has begun shutting down its Ebone network, leaving up to 4,500 companies without their Internet connection.

"Around 20% of the remaining customers had no alternative provider arranged. Smaller customers will be hurt the most. It is one big mess. It will not be easy to start up again. ... The banks have cut their throats."

The Ebone staff is not optimistic about finding jobs.

Europe is willing to let dying telcos take their networks down with them. Will the US be any different?

Tracking an Outbreak Minute by Minute
Topic: Biology 10:47 am EDT, Jul  4, 2002

Computer networks have been used for years by public health officials to monitor outbreaks of disease. Typically, reporting and compiling can take a day or more ... Public health experts recognize a need for more rapid surveillance and detection ... Systems are being developed to collect and analyze disease data immediately ... One such program, called Real-Time Outbreak and Disease Surveillance, or RODS, is being developed at the Center for Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh.

"Our goal is to be able to analyze patterns and ask whether there is something unusual compared to the usual. ... There's a torrent of information being collected routinely in real time. Our goals include building a thin layer of data collection infrastructure ...

A report on the latest research at the leading edge of the counter-biowarfare effort.

Design and Implementation of the Idemix Anonymous Credential System
Topic: Cryptography 5:31 pm EDT, Jun 29, 2002

Anonymous credential systems allow anonymous yet authenticated and accountable transactions between users and service providers. As such, they represent a powerful technique for protecting users' privacy when conducting Internet transactions.

In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of an anonymous credential system based on the protocols developed by earlier work. We demonstrate the use of a prototype in Java and discuss some deployment issues.
