America Online's Nullsoft has completely rebuilt its Winamp MP3 player on the 'Wasabi' coding platform, targeting developers looking to personalize and customize the popular digital media program. Does anyone care about this? Why do we need a new Winamp? AOLTW is guilding the lily ... trying to look busy for investors. When will they learn? In this case, it's not about the code. It's about the music, stupid! AOL Targets Developers with Winamp Makeover |

Strange Matters: Undiscovered Ideas at the Frontiers of Space and Time |

Topic: Science |

Scientists studying the universe find strange things in two places -- out in space and in their heads. This is the story of how the most imaginative physicists of our time perceive strange features of the universe in advance of the actual discoveries. This book speaks for the scientific theorists who are bold enough to imagine and predict the impossible. New ideas are percolating in their heads every day. One physicist may dream of subatomic particles that could resolve a variety of cosmological conundrums while another may study the likes of "funny energy," which may explain how rapidly the universe is expanding. This is the stuff of Strange Matters. Click on the image of the book cover to read the full text online. Strange Matters: Undiscovered Ideas at the Frontiers of Space and Time |

Pet food stores weren't the killer app for the Web, but peer-reviewed scholarly journals might be. "Journals sink or swim based on whether they attract the top authors. Journals that don't embrace electronic tools to speed their processes will ultimately be at a competitive disadvantage. Scholarly Reviews Through the Web |

Yet Another One-hand Keyboard |

Topic: Human Computer Interaction |

It's a pocket-sized computer keyboard. It's highly portable and operated with one hand. It produces all the usual characters with relatively few keys which are pressed in groups, i.e., chords. Production models would include (at least) a miniature joystick. I had memorized all the chords after a week or so of intermittently playing with my first working unit. After that I quit using my qwerty all together and never missed it. Yet Another One-hand Keyboard |

Stealthy Keyboard: US Patent 6,429,854 |

A stealthy, one-hand keyboard suitable for pedestrians is implemented as a frame held between thumb and palm, to which is attached an adjustable array of keyswitches. The configuration is such that the fingers play no part in supporting the keyboard against gravity, nor in retaining it within the hand. This property facilitates faster typing. The keyboard is strapless and leaves the fingers near their relaxed positions. The hand hides the keyboard on one side and chords are entered by small motions of the fingers, actuating contact being via the flesh on the palm sides of the middle and distal phalanges. These properties reduce the keyboard's observability. Stealthy Keyboard: US Patent 6,429,854 |

Keyboard for Those on the Move |

John McKown, an inventor in Scottsdale, AZ, abandoned long-standing ideas about how people input data and how computers receive it. He has won a patent for a wearable, one-handed keyboard that lets users type as they pace around an office, walk down the street, lean back in an airplane seat or are passing time standing around. "Within a week I had memorized all the chords, though I still had to think about them. Within two months I'd learned it all instinctively, and that was through purely accidental learning. I'd pick it up whenever I had a minute. Now I'd never go back to a Qwerty board ..." Keyboard for Those on the Move |

This will be the second time an International School on Disarmament and Research on Conflicts (ISODARCO) summer course will focus on information technologies and their relation to war and international relations. The course, on "Computers, Networks and Prospects for European and World Security", will be focused on Cyberwar (CW), Netwar (NW), the current Revolution in Military Affairs (RMA) and related issues. Issues of major importance in such a discussion are: the relation between computers and regional defense; the threat of "cyberterrorism" as well as "cyberwar"; new forms of group organization like "networks" and how information technology supports them; the impact of information technology developments on military doctrine and organization of military forces. Follow the "Principal Lecturers" link for lots of good references on the topic. Cyberwar, Netwar and the Revolution in Military Affairs - Real Threats and Virtual Myths |

United States Patent: 6,408,391 Disclosed is a method and apparatus which includes a security computer system capable of deploying and monitoring software agents on one or more nodes of a network of computers. The agents on each node include a framework agent and either a misdirection mission or a defensive mission. Upon an intrusion detection mission sending information to the security computer system indicative of an actual or suspected misuse or intrusion, the security computer system can automatically take countermeasures against the suspected or actual intrusion or misuse. Automatic countermeasures include using a defensive countermeasure to increase an auditing level conducted by the intrusion detection mission. A misdirection countermeasure mission is used to misdirect requests of the suspected or actual intruder or misuser. An offensive countermeasure is used to send a chase mission to the suspected or actual intruder. The offensive chase mission can either be automatically dispatched or dispatched with human intervention. The computer system includes a monitor for monitoring by a human system administrator. Designed by Ms. Julie Huff, a systems architect at PRC (Northrup Grumman), who calls herself an "idea girl." Dynamic system defense for information warfare |
