The Social Life of Legal Information
Topic: Politics and Law 8:10 pm EDT, Aug 20, 2002

Some ["digital champions"] have difficulty realizing that the battle for which they have fought has essentially been won.

Education is being radically and irreversibly transformed with the help of digital technologies. We cannot, nor should we want to go back. The only significant question is how do we go forward.

... We need less cheerleading and more constructive critique.

Change has been pushed too heavily from the narrow perspective of information and its delivery. This perspective almost inevitably leaves out questions of learning, meaning, interpretation, communication, and community that are central to understanding both change and inertia.

The Internet is asking you a Question, and it is not: TCP or UDP?

An updated version of this article, by Paul Duguid, co-author of _The Social Life of Information_, will appear in the September issue of First Monday.

SEC Targets 'Swap' Deals by Telecom Firms
Topic: Telecom Industry 7:01 am EDT, Aug 20, 2002

The SEC has ruled invalid an accounting rationale used by some telecommunications companies to justify deals in which they appeared to trade access to one another's wires.

The new ruling means any companies that relied on the rationale to boost their revenue may be forced to restate their financial results.

Look for restatements to arrive soon, but expect the market to ignore them. (There's no sense in letting a few unwanted facts spoil the rally! Right?)

Topic: Telecom Industry 6:51 am EDT, Aug 20, 2002

Qwest agreed last night to sell its yellow pages directories business to a group of financiers for $7 billion in a move that would help it avert a bankruptcy filing.

The big Q postpones the inevitable, once again.

Opposition to Nanotechnology
Topic: Nano Tech 6:47 am EDT, Aug 20, 2002

The great Gray Goo debate is beginning to matter.

Nanotechnology is toddling into commercialization ... companies are racing to scale up production of carbon nanotubes ...

The crosscurrents of opinion that will shape nanotechnology's commercialization are bound to become stronger -- and more unpredictable -- as a broader range of participants join the Gray Goo debate.

This article is about a Canadian organization called the ETC Group. (ETC stands for Eco-Equity Erosion, Technology Transformation and Corporate Control.) Under a different name in the 1990s, this group fought Monsanto on agro-bio-tech issues. They are advocates of the so-called "precautionary principle."

Magnetoencephalography: theory, instrumentation, and applications to noninvasive studies of the working human brain
Topic: Science 5:01 pm EDT, Aug 17, 2002

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is a noninvasive technique for investigating neuronal activity in the living human brain. The time resolution of the method is better than 1 ms and the spatial discrimination is, under favorable circumstances, 2-3 mm for sources in the cerebral cortex.

Many interesting properties of the working human brain can be studied, including spontaneous activity and signal processing following external stimuli.

A subscription to _Reviews of Modern Physics_ is required for access to the full text, but this study is comprehensive -- 93 pages in length.
