Following is the full transcript of the testimony yesterday [September 18] of Eleanor Hill, staff director of an inquiry into the Sept. 11 attacks, before a joint Congressional committee, as transcribed by the Federal News Service Inc. This is an interim report on the issue of "What did we know, and when did we know it?" Very lengthy, but worth the time for those interested in the matter. Props to NYT on posting this before it showed up in Lexis-Nexis Congressional Universe. Full Transcript from Testimony on Attacks |

If the Bush administration's preparations for war with Saddam Hussein were proceeding appropriately, the president would probably be curling up right now with something called a National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) for Iraq. But ... there is no NIE for Iraq and there probably won't be one anytime soon. Intelligence Test | The New Republic |

Dark Fiber : Tracking Critical Internet Culture |
Topic: Society |
9:36 pm EDT, Sep 9, 2002 |
I mentioned this book back in June. It's now for sale, online or at your favorite local bookstore. (You can search for "Lovink" to retrieve my earlier entry.) According to media critic Geert Lovink, the Internet is being closed off by corporations and governments intent on creating a business and information environment free of dissent. Calling himself a radical media pragmatist, Lovink envisions an Internet culture that goes beyond the engineering culture that spawned it to bring humanities, user groups, social movements, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), artists, and cultural critics into the core of Internet development. In Dark Fiber, Lovink combines aesthetic and ethical concerns and issues of navigation and usability without ever losing sight of the cultural and economic agendas of those who control hardware, software, content, design, and delivery. A Biological Understanding of Human Nature: A Talk With Steven Pinker | Edge |
Topic: Science |
9:19 pm EDT, Sep 9, 2002 |
The main question is: "Why are empirical questions about how the mind works so weighted down with political and moral and emotional baggage? Why do people believe that there are dangerous implications to the idea that the mind is a product of the brain, that the brain is organized in part by the genome, and that the genome was shaped by natural selection?" This idea has been met with demonstrations, denunciations, picketings, and comparisons to Nazism, both from the right and from the left. And these reactions affect both the day-to-day conduct of science and the public appreciation of the science. By exploring the political and moral colorings of discoveries about what makes us tick, we can have a more honest science and a less fearful intellectual milieu. This monograph reviews events since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and discusses the current state of al Qaeda and the kinds of actions that can be expected of it in the future. Al Qaeda constitutes the most serious immediate threat to the security of the United States, so the campaign against terrorism must remain focused. The monograph describes the central elements that must be emphasized in the next, more-complex phase of that campaign. Countering al Qaeda [PDF] |
