] Dozens of residents in Waterford and Niantic reported ] seeing a large aircraft flying unusually low and close to ] the Millstone nuclear power plants early Thursday night. ] ] The sighting generated numerous calls to local police ] departments and to The Day, with many of the callers ] expressing alarm at what they had seen. ] ] Officer Stephen Dubin of the airport police at Groton-New ] London Airport identified the aircraft as a C5A military ] cargo plane, which he said was flying at 3,500 feet, ] possibly headed for Westover Air Force Base in ] Massachusetts. ] Groton - A small plane hit three houses and crashed into ] the Poquonnock River on Monday, killing both people ] aboard, police and aviation officials said. What was really funny was that within SECONDS of hearing about this, my entire company was speculating that it was our company's shuttle, prompting an e-mail stating "NO EB aircraft were involved!!" Plane fall down, go boom. |

] Belmar was in the midst of an idyllic summer night at ] 7:50 p.m. Tuesday. Families gathered on large, wraparound ] porches. One man sat at a table paying bills in his 12th ] Avenue home. A thunderstorm rumbled in the distance. ] ] Three minutes later, chaos reigned. ] ] At 7:53 p.m., with the sky an ominous shade of gray, ] winds grew in strength, lifting patio furniture into the ] air. Large trees soon bent to the breaking point. Then ] came the funnel-shaped cloud that sent people scrambling ] for safety. Destruction -- quick and brutal -- followed. ] ] By the time the storm had passed, at least 25 homes had ] sustained damage -- some of it extensive. At least a ] half-dozen cars were smashed. Two utility poles were ] ripped from the ground, and about 45 trees were either ] downed or suffered serious damage. Monmouth County gets its ass kicked by tornadoes again. |
