Drivers urged to hunt for cheaper gas
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:51 am EST, Feb 12, 2003

] American drivers should shop aggressively for gasoline
] bargains in the face of "dramatic" and questionable price
] increases, the auto club AAA said Tuesday.

So basically, they think we should drive around looking for gas which is a penny or two cheaper per gallon? What's that save you, maybe ten cents? A quarter? How much gas do you waste in the meantime looking for cheaper gas? I mean, okay, when we go down to New Jersey to visit friends/family, we fill up there because it's cheaper than in NY or CT. But around town? All the gas prices are about the same, PENNIES different. I think driving around to find it cheaper just wastes more money and fuel. Which contributes to the problem.

Radioactive water leak found at Salem I plant
Topic: Local Information 9:38 am EST, Feb 11, 2003

] The state is working with the federal Nuclear Regulatory
] Commission and PSEG Nuclear, which runs the plant, to
] investigate the leak of radioactive water, which is
] around a spent-fuel pool building on the site, according
] to a DEP statement.
]
] According to the DEP, the leak was identified when
] elevated levels of radioactive tritium were discovered in
] ground water and reported last week by the NRC, which
] regulates the nuclear power industry. DEP officials
] confirmed ground water contamination in samples analyzed
] yesterday.

For Rattle: Salem 1 started operating in 1977. Oyster Creek went online in '68, I believe. I recommend you move. Now. :) But don't move here... "Millstone Power Station sits on a peninsula on the eastern end of Long Island Sound. The site is 3.2 miles west-southwest of New London, Conn. The station consists of three units: Millstone 1, a 660-megawatt unit, began commercial operation in 1970 and is currently undergoing decommissioning. Millstone 2, an 870-megawatt unit, began commercial operation in 1975, and Millstone 3, an 1,150-megawatt unit, began commercial operation in 1986."

] ] You've spend $2,000 on home astronomy?? What do you
] have?!

Well it's not like I spent it all at the same time!! I've
built up my collection slowly over the last few years.
Telescope itself: $600.
Computer Control: $149
Bincoculars: $160 (got them on sale though, actually I
got two pairs, but I only use one for astronomy, so I'll
just count the one pair. $160. They're that good.)
Field Tripod: $200
Table tripod: $35
Camera: $300
Carrying case for telescope: $200
Eyepieces: $89, $59, $79
Right-angle viewfinder: $55(?)
Adapter to attach camera to telescope: $45 and $24 (one
piece for the telescope and one for the camera)
Filters: LPR (light pollution reduction)- $67; Moon filter (for when the moon is full.. it's hard to see detail, you need a neutral density filter) $20
I'd guess there's about another $100-$150 worth of miscellaneous stuff I have (books, charts, other accessories). So yes, around $2K.
It adds up quickly, but that's the price you pay for an interesting
hobby!

My current wish list includes another $300 worth of
stuff.

State Can Make Inmate Sane Enough to Execute, Court Rules
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:08 am EST, Feb 11, 2003

] The federal appeals court in St. Louis ruled yesterday
] that officials in Arkansas can force a prisoner on death
] row to take antipsychotic medication to make him sane
] enough to execute. Without the drugs, the prisoner,
] Charles Laverne Singleton, could not be put to death
] under a United States Supreme Court decision that
] prohibits the execution of the insane.
]
] Yesterday's 6-to-5 decision is the first by a federal
] appeals court to allow such an execution.

I'm really looking forward to the day that this country looks back on our dark days of executing people, and cries. This is so wrong.

I got my KI pills in the mail. I laughed at them, though.. I figure I've got bigger problems to worry about than my nuke plant melting down or getting bombed.. there's far more interesting terrorist targets around here... I've got the sub base, the rt 95 bridge that goes over the river to the sub base (bomb that bridge and no subs are going out to sea), my own place of employment (bomb that and no subs will get built for a while).. Pfizer (which tends to explode on its own every so often), Dow chemical, and a tank farm, all within five miles of me. I'm not too worried about Millstone melting down. They send us a magazine quarterly, telling us all how safe it is. Yet, on the back cover is the evacuation route we're supposed to take.
