To the racquetball league:
Topic: Local Information 12:36 pm EST, Mar 26, 2003

"Second, if you are playing a match today, you should build in more time to get on the Subase. They have received a bomb threat this morning and security is searching every vehicle that is entering the Base. George stated the traffic is backed up from the main gate to Route 12. Perhaps it will calm down by this afternoon/evening but you should be aware of a potential delay."

From Barry's e-mail to the raquetball league, regarding the sub base (where we play our matches).. At first, we all thought this was a rumor. Shit. And so the war hits (my) home.

Red-hair gene “suppresses pain in women”
Topic: Health and Wellness 11:28 am EST, Mar 26, 2003

] Researchers, led by Professor Jeffrey Mogil of McGill
] University in Montreal, found that women who possessed
] the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene were able to
] tolerate more pain than either men or women without the
] gene when given the analgesic drug pentazocine.
]
]
] The findings, published in the Proceedings of the
] National Academy of Sciences, confirm the existence of a
] female-specific pain pathway and could ultimately help
] doctors make better choices when prescribing painkillers,
] say the researchers.

I wonder if this is related to the study I read about recently that said red-haired women are harder to anesthesize than others. It's true, too.. I've been told by doctors that I fight certain types of anesthesia. I'm glad to see that red-haired women are getting some press.

Drained of sailors, life goes on in Navy town
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:42 am EST, Mar 26, 2003

] There used to be more sailors. That was before they left
] for the war on Iraq.

It's so true... this town's more dead and deserted than usual. Less traffic, shorter waits at the restaurants, LESS TRAFFIC... less of a wait to get on the base...

Movie Industry Screwed! Economy Screwed! Rattle's cousin screwed out of financing for '2000 Maniacs' remake!
Topic: Arts 8:07 am EST, Mar 24, 2003

] What does it say about American culture if Venice
] filmmaker Tim Sullivan can't get financing for a remake
] of the 1964 splatter classic "2000 Maniacs"?
]
] What it said to Sullivan is that raising funds for
] low-budget independent movies -- never easy -- has gotten
] tougher since Wall Street laid an egg.
]
] At 38, Sullivan is a 20-year horror veteran. His first
] break came in his hometown of Metuchen, N.J., on 1983's
] forgotten "Return of the Aliens: The Deadly Spawn."
] Sullivan's job, wielding a Black & Decker hand pump
] behind the scenes, was to make sure the blood gushed on
] cue and on budget.

Tim is also my cousin, so meme/blog this around and get my kin some attention..

] The plot: Confederate zombies take revenge on
] present-day Yankee tourists.

Whole bunch of folks in the southeast on MemeStreams.. If this dosen't get you going, what will?

] A couple of characters will be dropped and some action
] sequences trimmed. However, there are some compromises
] he won't make. The script said eight murders, and eight
] murders there will be.
]
] "If I have to choose between a decapitation and a
] motorcycle chase," Sullivan said, "I'm going with the
] decapitation."

Right on..

War Brings Ban On TV To Fitch High School
Topic: Local Information 10:53 am EST, Mar 21, 2003

] But the TVs remained off, due to a policy put in place in
] Groton and several other school districts designed to
] shield students from potentially unsettling war coverage
] and keep the war from becoming an obsession, at least
] during school hours.

Yes, we must shield students from current events. And we must also wrap them in bubble wrap and never let them leave the bedroom so that they don't ever, ever get hurt!!

Urgent Mystery at Outset: Was Hussein Hit?
Topic: Current Events 10:25 am EST, Mar 21, 2003

] The administration officials said they had been relying
] on intelligence from Iraqis who had not spoken to them in
] the past. "People are talking to us now and telling us
] things now that they would never have dreamed of telling
] us," one senior official said. "People are sticking their
] necks out in all kinds of ways in Iraq that they never
] would do before."
]
] "There was no question about the legality of the target,
] but there was some discussion about how solid the
] information was and who might actually be there and
] when," the official said. "The conclusion was that even
] though we didn't know for sure, it was an important
] target in any case."

It would be really funny if the Iraqis who were giving out intellegence were just telling us the locations of people they didn't like.

It's Texas.. I'm surprised the judge didn't get pissed off enough to give him the death penalty.
