Red-hair gene “suppresses pain in women”
Topic: Health and Wellness 11:28 am EST, Mar 26, 2003

] Researchers, led by Professor Jeffrey Mogil of McGill
] University in Montreal, found that women who possessed
] the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene were able to
] tolerate more pain than either men or women without the
] gene when given the analgesic drug pentazocine.
]
]
] The findings, published in the Proceedings of the
] National Academy of Sciences, confirm the existence of a
] female-specific pain pathway and could ultimately help
] doctors make better choices when prescribing painkillers,
] say the researchers.

I wonder if this is related to the study I read about recently that said red-haired women are harder to anesthesize than others. It's true, too.. I've been told by doctors that I fight certain types of anesthesia. I'm glad to see that red-haired women are getting some press.

] Christopher Reeve, the actor who has been paralyzed and on
] a respirator since breaking his neck in a riding accident
] eight years ago, has had electrodes implanted in his
] diaphragm in an effort to restore his ability to breathe
] naturally.
]
] The results are extremely promising, said Dr. Raymond
] Onders, who performed outpatient surgery on Mr. Reeve at
] University Hospitals of Cleveland on Feb. 28. He can
] breathe without the respirator for more than two hours at
] a stretch compared with 10 minutes before the operation,
] Dr. Onders said. As his diaphragm muscles regain strength
] over the next couple of months, Mr. Reeve may be able to
] wean himself permanently from the respirator.

Railways Held Liable for Workers' Fear of Deadly Disease
Topic: Health and Wellness 2:54 pm EST, Mar 10, 2003

] Railroad workers who have a noncancerous illness because
] of exposure to asbestos on the job can recover damages
] for mental torment over the prospect of actually getting
] cancer itself, the Supreme Court ruled today.
]
] In a 5-to-4 decision that was anxiously awaited by
] insurance and business interests for its potential impact
] outside the railroad industry, the court upheld a jury
] award of nearly $5 million for six former railroad
] workers from West Virginia who had developed a
] noncancerous lung disease, asbestosis, after being
] exposed to asbestos dust.
]
] Asbestosis itself does not lead to cancer. But people who
] have the condition are statistically vulnerable to
] cancer, including a deadly form called mesothelioma,
] which attacks the chest cavity and causes excruciating
] pain that is relieved only by death.

Mosquito experts: West Nile is just the beginning
Topic: Health and Wellness 9:22 am EST, Mar  5, 2003

] Those attending the conference also planned to assess the
] threat of using mosquitoes to spread bioterrorism agents.
]
] Osterholm agreed that such a scenario was a remote
] possibility, but also was concerned that terrorists might
] use mosquito-spraying trucks to spray harmful chemicals.
]
] "Next time there is a spray truck ... make damn sure you
] know whose truck that is," he said. "We have to make
] certain that all of us are the good guys."

Remember, kiddies: terrorists are EVERYWHERE.

How appropriate! I was just saying last week how I made it through the winter without getting a cold, and BAM! I missed work yesterday because I'm sick as all hell. An interesting article.

Study: Men have biological clocks, too
Topic: Health and Wellness 9:12 am EST, Feb  6, 2003

] "We're finding that there is a smaller volume, which
] would mean there would be fewer numbers of sperm," she
] said. "And also that the sperm get slower and less aimed
] at the goal -- they're not swimming directly to the egg."

Seems to coincide with men in general as they get older.. they act like their sperm, "slower and less aimed at the goal"
