] Researchers, led by Professor Jeffrey Mogil of McGill ] University in Montreal, found that women who possessed ] the melanocortin-1 receptor (MC1R) gene were able to ] tolerate more pain than either men or women without the ] gene when given the analgesic drug pentazocine. ] ] ] The findings, published in the Proceedings of the ] National Academy of Sciences, confirm the existence of a ] female-specific pain pathway and could ultimately help ] doctors make better choices when prescribing painkillers, ] say the researchers. I wonder if this is related to the study I read about recently that said red-haired women are harder to anesthesize than others. It's true, too.. ] Christopher Reeve, the actor who has been paralyzed and on ] a respirator since breaking his neck in a riding accident ] eight years ago, has had electrodes implanted in his ] diaphragm in an effort to restore his ability to breathe ] naturally. ] ] The results are extremely promising, said Dr. Raymond ] Onders, who performed outpatient surgery on Mr. Reeve at ] University Hospitals of Cleveland on Feb. 28. He can ] breathe without the respirator for more than two hours at ] a stretch compared with 10 minutes before the operation, ] Dr. Onders said. As his diaphragm muscles regain strength ] over the next couple of months, Mr. Reeve may be able to ] wean himself permanently from the respirator. Superman can breathe again!!!!!!!!! |

But people who ] have the condition are statistically vulnerable to ] cancer, including a deadly form called mesothelioma, ] which attacks the chest cavity and causes excruciating ] pain that is relieved only by death.
