Using LVM for MySQL Backup and Replication Setup

If someone asks me about MySQL Backup advice my first question would be if they have LVM installed or have some systems with similar features set for other operation systems. Veritas File System can do it for Solaris. Most SAN systems would work as well.

What is really needed is ability to create atomic snapshot of the volume, which can be later mounted same as original file system

Bombich Software: Carbon Copy Cloner: Bootable Backups for your Apple Notebook

Introducing Carbon Copy Cloner 2.3!

Have you ever wanted a simple, complete, bootable backup of your hard drive? Have you ever wanted to upgrade to a larger hard drive with minimal hassle and without reinstalling your OS and all of your applications? Have you ever wanted to move your entire Mac OS X installation to a new computer? Then CCC is the tool for you! CCC makes these tasks simple by harnessing the Unix power built into Mac OS X. In addition to the features that CCC has provided in the past, version 2 offers synchronization of the source and target as well as scheduled backup tasks. Now you can setup a regular backup regimen that occurs in the background, even if you are not logged in! Version 2 also offers enhancements for lab administrators, including the option to run pre and post-flight shell scripts, the ability to modify the list of items to be removed at the end of a clone, and the ability to create a disk image on the fly.

Works on my MacBook Pro 17", just booted from the cloned firewire drive. Now I have a backup that boots in case my hard drive dies again. I can update the backup image weekly, or as often as I install libraries, and then pull our source code from SVN when I boot from the firewire drive and... a dead disk will cost me no time. Woot.

The Lebanon War and the democratization of missile technology
Topic: Technology 3:01 am EDT, Aug 18, 2006

One proponent of this school of thought, John Arquilla, a professor at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, has argued: "What happens if you take your large hammer to a ball of quicksilver? That's what these networks are." He continues: "We are trying to wage war as if it still mattered that our forces are comprised of ‘the few and the large' -- a few large heavy divisions, a few large aircraft carrier battle groups -- when in fact war is migrating into the hands of the many and the small -- little distributed units. We live in an era when technology has expanded the destructive power of a small group and the individual beyond our imaginations."

These lessons of combat -- now exemplified by Hezbollah's resistance to the IDF -- are not being lost elsewhere in the Arab world. According to a UPI story, "Anti-tank Rockets Menace Israelis," appearing on August 14, the day of the cease-fire, a reporter from the Israeli paper Ha'aretz recently interviewed a member of Fatah's al-Aksa brigades in Bethlehem, who said: "The brothers...are no longer interested in games with Kalashnikov rifles; they want anti-tank rockets....When this technology arrives, how difficult would it be for one of the fighters to sit on the Palestinian side of the wall at Abu Dis and fire a rocket at the King David Hotel? With less effort than a suicide bombing or shooting one can fire a missile and get the same results."

Sha - Women Men SexPacking Summer 2006 Catalog
Topic: Technology 12:45 am EDT, Aug 18, 2006

Sha interactive catalogs include X-rated pornographic content intended for adults only. These catalogs can be downloaded for private use only, and in no case should be transferred to non-consenting individuals or to minors. This website automatically alerts Parental Control Systems regarding its X-rated content.

This may be the first pron recommended on memestreams, but I'm recommending it because its really innovative. This is an interactive pornographic catalog. They do product placement, and then you can highlight an icon and it tells you about it. This shouldn't be limited to pron, its a good idea for all kinds of video and product placements. But pron is a really simple way to generate 'valuable' content that people will watch... as this is pretty hot pron, and then place products there. So this is first... but it won't be the last time this is stuff is done?

What Every Computer Scientist Should Know About Floating-Point Arithmetic
Topic: Technology 2:08 am EDT, Aug 14, 2006

Floating-point arithmetic is considered an esoteric subject by many people. This is rather surprising because floating-point is ubiquitous in computer systems. Almost every language has a floating-point datatype; computers from PCs to supercomputers have floating-point accelerators; most compilers will be called upon to compile floating-point algorithms from time to time; and virtually every operating system must respond to floating-point exceptions such as overflow. This paper presents a tutorial on those aspects of floating-point that have a direct impact on designers of computer systems. It begins with background on floating-point representation and rounding error, continues with a discussion of the IEEE floating-point standard, and concludes with numerous examples of how computer builders can better support floating-point.

People do not care for rounding errors in their financial reporting software.
