My friend George Morton, who figured this all out, says that by knowing the right numbers to look at we can have a good idea what countries will be leading in technology -- and presumably in economic development and power -- in the years ahead. The measure George likes is the number of Cisco Certified Internetwork Experts or CCIEs.

John Resig - TraceMonkey - Fast JIT Compiled Javascript
Topic: Technology 5:50 pm EDT, Aug 22, 2008

I've been waiting to blog about this for a long time now. A fantastic new improvement to Mozilla's JavaScript engine (SpiderMonkey) has landed. Code-named TraceMonkey this engine utilizes a techniques, called trace trees (PDF), which adds just-in-time native code compilation to SpiderMonkey.

A major goal of the project has been to set JavaScript up to compete with natively-compiled code, rather than simply against other interpreters. This means that we're starting to see speeds that are completely out of this league when it comes to performance.

dpkg --get-selections > selections.txt save the .txt file to a safe place then once reinstalled dpkg --set-selections < selections.txt followed by dselect update and apt-get dselect-upgrade show give you back your installed packages.

How to get your Ubuntu setup onto another Ubuntu setup. Nice.

Amazon EC2 is a Disruptive Technology
Topic: Technology 2:46 pm EDT, Aug 22, 2008

I wanted to pull up a new Ubuntu server. Normally that takes a few hours. I have to download a new CD image, install manually on a machine.

Not today. Today I typed:

ec2-run-instances ami-179e7a7e -k gsg-keypair

BAM. Ubuntu 8.04 image is up, and mine, and $0.10 an hour.

I feel like I just hit the crack pipe this is so powerful. This will change everything.

Star Caller - Vinnie Demo
Topic: Technology 5:13 am EDT, Aug 22, 2008

Vinnie is this summer's blockbuster from Acme Pictures, detailing the life and times of one of America's most notorious gangsters. Come see the film, or Vinnie will be VERY upset.

How upset? To find out, fill out the form. See, somebody ratted Vinnie out. Tell us who, and we'll cut you in on the box office. Tell us a little about the rat, and Vinnie will go after him. Vinnie likes em to know he's coming, so give us the rat's number and we'll let him know his days are numbered.

My new startup's demo - let there be dynamic audio and fun telephony that does not annoy but entertains. Push is dead, all hail pull.

Chris Blaug: Gamer's Forum - Q&A with AI Programmer
Topic: Technology 11:05 pm EDT, Aug 21, 2008

I went to an unusual place this evening...Independents Hall...not to be confused with the tourist-encrusted Independence Hall. A senior AI programmer, Chris Jurney, with Relic was giving an impromptu presentation on his involvement with Company of Heroes...game of the year 2006.

Indy Hall seemed like a proto-business incubator for tech-saavy individualists. The offices were located on the 2nd floor of an apartment in Old City. The room with high-vaulted ceilings, contained a scattered melange of stylish office furniture covered over in power-strips and CAT-5 cables. I was settled in amongst a dozen or so visiting video game enthusiasts and about the same number of Indy Hall regulars.
