[IP] Former FCC chairman: Deregulation is a right-wing power grab
Topic: Society 12:04 am EDT, Jun  4, 2003

] Ever since the invention of the printing press,
] governments have tried to make an ally out of owners of
] the means of information distribution.
That's as old a
] story as when the powers that be tried to suppress
] Gutenberg's Bible. Not because they didn't believe in
] the Bible, but because they didn't believe everyone
] should be able to get one. This is a 600-year-old
] story. It's not a new story. But it's news to the United
] States that one side should get this close to that goal.

Strong words from Reed Hundt about the new FCC media ownership rule changes. Ted Turner has also come out strongly opposed to this in recent days. Basically the deal is that soon all the TV will be owned by Fox in the same way that all the radio stations are owned by Clear Channel.

The Philosopher of Islamic Terror

Excellent peice by Paul Berman on Sayyid Qutb, the man whom islamist extremeist philosophy can directly be attributed to.

This is a must read article. Long (10 pages), but completely worth it. Filled with insight and background on the collision of islamist and liberal culture..

We describe a methodology for the automatic identification of communities of practice from email logs within an organization.

We use a betweeness centrality algorithm that can rapidly find communities within a graph representing information flows. We apply this algorithm to an email corpus of nearly one million messages collected over a two-month span, and show that the method is effective at identifying true communities, both formal and informal, within these scale-free graphs.

This approach also enables the identification of leadership roles within the communities.

How the Internet search engine Google is changing what we can find out about one another -- and raising questions about whether we should.

... But somewhere along the path toward changing our daily lives, Google changed our concept of time as well. It has helped make our past -- or oddly refracted shards of it -- present and permanent. That's a radical notion for a medium usually defined by its ability to constantly update itself.

... perhaps you once went on a rant ... You may think those chapters are closed. Google begs to differ.

"It's the collapse of inconvenience. It turns out inconvenience was a really important part of our lives, and we didn't realize it."

"Instead of thinking, 'Was I curt last week?' I have to think about what happened when I was 17."

This article was the cover story in the February 2 issue of The Boston Globe Magazine. (Why didn't I see it earlier?)

I read Fromm after reading your signature on SE2600 years ago. Fromm is the bomb. This book is required reading if you want to understand the transformation of relatively "sane society's" into fascist states. Speaking of which, if you enjoy "Escape From Freedon", you will also like "The Sane Society", also by Fromm. It outlines what a healthy society looks like.

Despite the dotcom boom and bust, the computer and telecommunications revolution has barely begun. Over the next few decades, the internet and related technologies really will profoundly transform society

Finally, someone who gets it.

This is the best paper in the whole world. Hilarious, with some serious journalism thrown in. Also the definitive Moscow club guide if you're ever here.
