] 12/24/2004: Apple Computer, Inc. has filed suit against ] Mac TKA members ] ] Members of the Mac.TKA Community, ] ] Before reading, know this: Any replies made to this ] thread which are not questions will be deleted. ] ] Many of you are still questioning our motives surrounding ] the disabling, and later the deletion of, the torrent of ] Apple's pre-release beta of Mac OS X Tiger dubbed Build ] 8A323. You've all had many questions, and we've been ] carefully mulling over how to answer your concerns. Now ] we're prepared to provide you with an answer that is ] clear as to the issue at hand. ] ] The torrent was brought to the attention of Apple ] Computer's Legal team who subsequently contacted the site ] administrators, as well as some of the volunteer staff, ] to request the torrent's removal. The torrent was then ] disabled with a note instructing other staff members to ] not re-enable the torrent. Because of the nature of this ] incident, we wanted to ascertain as much information as ] possible about what has happened and what will happen in ] the future before making a statement. ] ] The Apple Developer Relations team has asked, and we've ] complied to the best of our abilities, that all ] pre-release torrents originating from the Apple Developer ] Connection be disabled; you'll find that all Tiger builds ] have been either disabled or deleted. As such, we'd like ] to ask that no one attempt to upload further pre-release ] software builds from the Developer program. Apple has ] many reasons for their decisions not to allow us to offer ] these torrents to you, and we -- the Mac.TKA Staff -- ] must abide by their wishes as the developers of the ] software in question. ] ] Furthermore, Apple has asked that all users who have ] downloaded this software without possessing an Apple ] program membership which allows you legal access to this ] software to delete all copies which may have been ] downloaded. ] ] We're here to host a Mac community and to serve torrents, ] to have a learning experience in building a peer-to-peer ] community. Users are responsible for content which they ] upload. Moderators and Administrators respond to any ] valid legal complaints in the manner which the staff ] feels is appropriate and addresses the concerns of the ] complaint. ] ] Remember that no one on BitTorrent is anonymous -- no ] matter what precautions you take, BitTorrent needs REAL, ] EXACT IP information to properly route traffic among ] peers. Just because we don't list full IPs and usernames ] on the tracker stats page doesn't mean that users who ] wish to won't have the ability to get this information. ] Just keep this in mind as you contribute and take conte... ] The secret to programming is not intelligence, though of ] course that helps. It is not hard work or experience, ] though they help, too. The secret to programming is ] having smart friends. ] ] Once we had a plausible way to ship, Apple became the ] ideal work environment. Every engineer we knew was ] willing to help us. We got resources that would never ] have been available to us had we been on the payroll. Best thing I've read in months. Skunkworks At Apple -- The Graphing Calculator Story |

] Nearly 400 images can be accessed through the links ] below. Each page contains 50 fast-loading thumbnails ] which link to larger images. For the sake of completeness ] (and to perhaps inspire young artists to persevere) I've ] included very early work dating from the late 1960's. ] Early work was created primarily in oils, intermediate ] work in acrylics and gouache, and later work using ] digital tools. The execution of the early works is ] sometimes primitive, the ideas are occasionally outdated, ] and the scans may be uncorrected. Nonetheless, the ] pictures may be amusing or instructive. Generally, the ] lower the serial number of an image, the older it is. The ] date ranges are approximate, however, and in some cases ] older images may have been catalogued with higher serial ] numbers when they were digitally remastered. Many of the ] images are being restored and may have been updated in ] the web edition of this site. High resolution images on ] the CD edition may be viewed with a graphics program. We just had our first meeting, to establish an Atlanta Bike Cooperative. "Sopo" for "South of Ponce," but the name may change. The idea is to have a group space where people can work on bikes. We salvage old bikes and make them good again and give them to people, etc. This core community then works to advance bike advocacy, safety, on and on. Its a very progressive, active crowd. Looks like its gonna happen. Get out of your god damned car! Get on a bike! We can help! Sopo Bike Co-Op |

] Because now I've finally read Red Mars, and I am agog at ] what may be the finest sf novel I've ever read. Red Mars ] has all the hard-sf window-dressing that many of us ] imagine when we think of sf: great and accessible tours ] through speculative cog sci, geology, astronomy, ] rocketry, physics, biology, genetics, and so on, until ] the head swims with the sheer scope of the research task ] Robinson set himself in this book. ] ] But the hard science is just the skin, and the meat of ] this book -- as with Pacific Edge -- is the "soft" ] science: the complex play of the community of his vast ] cast of characters as they set out to advance their ] competing agendas, writing the future of Mars. Doctorow mentioned this on boingboing the other day, and I just got through the System of the World, so I decided to check em out. On his recommendation I bought Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars. I'm 150 pages into Red Mars, and its just great. One of those books that you're drawn to, that you hate to put down even though you MUST GET SOME SLEEP. The science is good, he has a good grasp of it. But what really holds it are the group dynamics, shifting narrators, and excellent character development. I haven't read any sci-fi that wasn't Gibson, Sterling or Stephenson in years. I'm very glad I decided to on these. Boing Boing: Red Mars: a very belated appreciation |

] Artists produce visual art, writers produce words to tell ] stories, musicians produce songs. All of these things ] require at least four things the way I see it. ] ] 1) Perseverance - These people must be able to keep ] trying, even if they do not like how something they are ] working on is turning out. They don't just decide ] they can't do it and quit because it's too ] hard. ] ] 2) Creativity - These people have to obviously have ] something in their heads that they want and know how to ] get out onto a media that they can share with the rest of ] the world. ] ] 3) Balls - They also aren't afraid to put their work ] out there for the world to see. They aren't afraid ] of being laughed at because they know that its the best ] they could have done, and what does it mean if someone ] else makes fun of them? ] ] 4) Drive - They continue to work, learn, and grow at ] their skill by never being satisfied. By always pushing ] the limits of their abilities. [ Kobi's a smart kid... i've already tossed some of my thoughts into his comment thread there, but since i saw that Tom memed it, i figured i'd bump. -k] baudburn.com: Geeking in Style.: Comment on On Creation and Perseverance. |

It has placed us at the beginning of a new, ] unprecedented period of human possibility, where all ] economies and ecologies are becoming global, relational, ] and interconnected. ] In order to understand these emerging forces, there is an ] urgent need to articulate precisely what we are doing to ] ourselves and to our world. ] Massive Change:The Future of Global Design is an ] exhibition that will change the way you think about ] design just as contemporary design is changing the way we ] live in the world. Design affects all aspects of our ] lives and holds the possibility of changing the very ] nature of human life itself. Massive Change: The Future ] of Global Design is an exhibition grounded in a ] provocative proposition. It is a celebration of the human ] capacity to change the world and a call to recognize both ] the power and the responsibility of design. As interesting as it was pretentious.
