Pentaho Commercial Open Source Business Intelligence: Product Overview
Topic: Technology 5:41 pm EST, Feb 16, 2009

The Pentaho BI Suite provides a full spectrum of business intelligence (BI) capabilities including query and reporting, interactive analysis, dashboards, ETL/data integration, data mining, and a BI platform that have made it the world's most popular open source BI suite. Pentaho's products are used by leading organizations including U.S. Naval Air Systems Command, Lifetime Networks, Terra Industries, Sun Microsystems, MySQL, and many others.
Pentaho Reporting

All organizations use reporting in one form or another. As a result, reporting is considered a core business intelligence need and often the first BI application deployed. Pentaho Reporting allows organizations to easily access, format, and deliver information to employees, customers, and partners.null

As a reporting and analysis guy, I have to say... this looks to be the first FOSS reporting package that is not totally without value other than PDF conversion, the one thing the other packages do for you. This Pentaho thing doesn't suck. All the others do. Strong endorsement by me.

Stop scripters from slamming your website hundreds of times a second? - Stack Overflow

I'll be a little more clear than I was before: This is about the bag o' crap sales on woot.com. I'm the president of Woot Workshop, the subsidiary of Woot that does the design, writes the product descriptions, podcasts, blog posts, and moderates the forums. I work in the css/html world and am only barely familiar with the rest of the developer world. I work closely with the developers and have talked through all of the answers here (and many other ideas we've had).

Usability of the site is a massive part of my job, and making the site exciting and fun is most of the rest of it. That's where the three goals below derive. CAPTCHA harms usability, and bots steal the fun and excitement out of our crap sales.

But I would like my insights to be of help during these difficult and confusing times, for altruistic reasons, mostly, although not entirely. This is because when times get really bad, as they did when the Soviet Union collapsed, lots of people just completely lose it. Men, especially. Successful, middle-aged men, breadwinners, bastions of society, turn out to be especially vulnerable. And when they just completely lose it, they become very tedious company. My hope is that some amount of preparation, psychological and otherwise, can make them a lot less fragile, and a bit more useful, and generally less of a burden.

Women seem much more able to cope. Perhaps it is because they have less of their ego invested in the whole dubious enterprise, or perhaps their sense of personal responsibility is tied to those around them and not some nebulous grand enterprise. In any case, the women always seem far more able to just put on their gardening gloves and go do something useful, while the men tend to sit around groaning about the Empire, or the Republic, or whatever it is that they lost. And when they do that, they become very tedious company. And so, without a bit of mental preparation, the men are all liable to end up very lonely and very drunk. So that's my little intervention.

Solving Atlanta’s Crime Statistics Mystery « Mostly Media
Topic: Local Information 11:03 am EST, Feb 15, 2009

Kent says Mayor Franklin is telling outright lies when she says, as she did again recently, that crime in Atlanta is, statistically, down. Kent says Franklin is lying because crimes in the City of Atlanta are actually up, but there’s no way to prove this because APD is not providing accurate stats for interested parties…. the “interested parties” being local journalism outlets such as The Sunday Paper and the AJC; that any efforts by journalists-with-money-behind-’em to find reliable and accurate crime stats are being thwarted by APD and/or, I presume, City Hall.

Atlanta has a long history of fabricating crime statistics.

Daily Routines: President Obama
Topic: Current Events 10:57 am EST, Feb 15, 2009

Although his presidency is barely a week old, some of Mr. Obama’s work habits are already becoming clear. He shows up at the Oval Office shortly before 9 in the morning, roughly two hours later than his early-to-bed, early-to-rise predecessor. Mr. Obama likes to have his workout — weights and cardio — first thing in the morning, at 6:45. (Mr. Bush slipped away to exercise midday.)

He reads several papers, eats breakfast with his family and helps pack his daughters, Malia, 10, and Sasha, 7, off to school before making the 30-second commute downstairs — a definite perk for a man trying to balance work and family life. He eats dinner with his family, then often returns to work; aides have seen him in the Oval Office as late as 10 p.m., reading briefing papers for the next day.

“Even as he is sober about these challenges, I have never seen him happier,” Mr. Axelrod said. “The chance to be under the same roof with his kids, essentially to live over the store, to be able to see them whenever he wants, to wake up with them, have breakfast and dinner with them — that has made him a very happy man.”

Google Charts for DBA: Tablespaces Allocation
Topic: Technology 10:50 am EST, Feb 15, 2009

Pythian DBA’s have daily reports for each monitored database and some of the components are using charts to visualize the data. I’m a big fan of charts myself (when applied appropriately) and want to show how you can generate simple charts directly from the database. You’d be very surprised how easy it can be done from *any* database without installing any additional software or configuring something special.

This method is not limited to Oracle by any means — use it with MySQL, SQL Server or any other database as well as without a database — yes, visualize your sar data now!

In this example, we will plot a pie diagram with Oracle tablespaces. This would be very handy when you are starting to analyze the space allocation for a database. Here is the end result of the report for my Grid Control repository test database:

PVM: Parallel Virtual Machine
Topic: Technology 6:59 am EST, Feb 15, 2009

PVM (Parallel Virtual Machine) is a software package that permits a heterogeneous collection of Unix and/or Windows computers hooked together by a network to be used as a single large parallel computer. Thus large computational problems can be solved more cost effectively by using the aggregate power and memory of many computers. The software is very portable. The source, which is available free thru netlib, has been compiled on everything from laptops to CRAYs.

PVM enables users to exploit their existing computer hardware to solve much larger problems at minimal additional cost. Hundreds of sites around the world are using PVM to solve important scientific, industrial, and medical problems in addition to PVM's use as an educational tool to teach parallel programming. With tens of thousands of users, PVM has become the de facto standard for distributed computing world-wide.
