Slashdot | BBC Creates 'Perl on Rails'
Topic: Technology 12:11 am EST, Dec  2, 2007

The two frameworks fill different needs. Rails might be great for a completely new product, where you can fully take advantage of its "Convention over Configuration" motto as well as its neat integration between M, V, and C.

Catalyst aims to be an extensible framework. Sure, there are recommendations for new projects, such as using DBIx::Class as the ORM, or Template Toolkit for your view, but these aren't written in stone. Each layer is flexible. You can use CPAN modules to build your own models and views. Want world GDP data? Make a model that calls WebService::CIA. Have your own custom database model already? Use it! (SixApart did this with Catalyst their partitioned database system Memcached).

Catalyst is a little rough around the edges for some of the simpler cases that you might use RoR for, such as a plain old CRUD form system, which Rails will nicely generate for you, but for more complex applications Catalyst is not a bad choice.

I love Catalyst.

Overnight shift to be classified as 'probable' cancer cause - CNN.com
Topic: Health and Wellness 11:23 pm EST, Nov 29, 2007

Like UV rays and diesel exhaust fumes, working the graveyard shift will soon be listed as a "probable" cause of cancer.

Graveyard shift work disrupts the circadian rhythm, the body's biological clock.

It is a surprising step validating a concept once considered wacky. And it is based on research that finds higher rates of breast and prostate cancer among women and men whose work day starts after dark.

Next month, the International Agency for Research on Cancer, the cancer arm of the World Health Organization, will add overnight shift work as a probable carcinogen.

The American Cancer Society says it will likely follow. Up to now, the U.S. organization has considered the work-cancer link to be "uncertain, controversial or unproven."

The higher cancer rates don't prove working overnight can cause cancer. There may be other factors common among graveyard shift workers that raise their risk for cancer.

Oh noes, I'm corellated to die?

A-TRAIN Atlanta Transit/Bike/Walk Trip Planner (MARTA)
Topic: Local Information 7:05 pm EST, Nov 29, 2007

The A-TRAIN Trip Planner is an interactive online utility provided to help Atlanta residents and visitors get around the city by foot, bicycle, and transit.

This resource is produced and maintained by volunteers from Citizens for Progressive Transit, a non-profit advocacy organization, as a non-commercial, open-source project. Initial funding for the project has been provided by Friends of the Earth.

How the Trip Planner Works

The goal of this utility is to give users maximum flexibility in planning car-free trips around Atlanta. Users specify their start and end locations, a departure or arrival time, and any other preferences relevant to the specific type of trip. Currently, four trips types are supported:

1. Walk-Only Trips: These trips are completed entirely on foot, and are the simplest type of trip in terms of user input into the utility; in addition to start/end locations and time, the only variable is walking speed. This option will return the shortest trip possible using walkable facilities, which is defined to include all publicly accessible roadways and footpaths other than those where pedestrian traffic is expressly forbidden (e.g. expressways). Currently, no consideration is made for the specific level of pedestrian accommodations on a walkable facility; this feature may be added in a future version.

2. Bike-Only Trips: These trips are completed entirely by bicycle. When this option is selected, the utility will find the optimal legal route between two points based on user-specified cycling preferences. It is assumed that the cyclist will always ride in the street (it is against the law in Georgia for adults to ride on the sidewalk) and will observe one-way street restrictions and other traffic regulations.

Hands On: Zonbu's Data Syncing Linux Notebook
Topic: Technology 7:00 pm EST, Nov 29, 2007

The $279 Zonbu Notebook is the latest offering from the Open Source computer company—following up on the $99 Zonbu Desktop released earlier this year. The software is the same OS seen on the desktop, updated with a few new features such as real time data syncing. But the question remains: Does Zonbu find the sweet spot between solid performance and an entry level price?

But the part that gets me the most about Senator Clinton is the eager embrace of spinelessness. I don't get this in Democrats generally. I never have, but I especially don't get it after two defeats to the likes of George Bush (ok, one defeat, but let's put that aside for the moment). Our party seems constitutionally wedded to the idea that you wage a campaign with tiny speech. Say as little as possible. Be as uncontroversial as you can. Embrace the chameleon as the mascot. Fear only that someone would clearly understand what you believe. (Think of Kerry denying he supported gay marriage -- and recognize that the same sort of people who thought that would win him support are now inside the control room at ClintonHQ).

Walk Score - Helping homebuyers, renters, and real estate agents find houses and apartments in great neighborhoods.
Topic: Technology 4:18 am EST, Nov 28, 2007

What is Walk Score?

We help homebuyers, renters, and real estate agents find houses and apartments in great neighborhoods. Walk Score shows you a map of what's nearby and calculates a Walk Score for any property. Buying a house in a walkable neighborhood is good for your health and good for the environment.

Killer app. Gold star.

"Romney, whose Mormon faith has become the subject of heated debate in Republican caucuses, wants America to be blind to his religious beliefs and judge him on merit instead," Ijaz writes. "Yet he seems to accept excluding Muslims because of their religion, claiming they're too much of a minority for a post in high-level policymaking."

Dear God, please save us from Mormon Fundies.

Unheralded military successes - Los Angeles Times
Topic: Current Events 2:28 am EST, Nov 28, 2007

In all these countries, our military aid is combined with civilian development assistance. This is the global war on terrorism as preventive rather than as proscriptive. It doesn't cost much. You could spread Green Beret teams across Africa for the price of one F-22 jet. If there is another model out there that will keep the U.S. military engaged without overextending it, and will help move along inter-agency cooperation, I have not seen it.

An interesting commentary.
