Delta talks with Northwest, United are confirmed by Congressman Delta officials are formally discussing merger possibilities with executives from both Northwest and United, U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., confirmed in a Tuesday interview with the Minneapolis Star Tribune (free registration). Oberstar says he met with two high-ranking Northwest executives Tuesday, saying: "They confirmed that Delta is looking at a Northwest option and a United Airlines option for a merger. Northwest sees a benefit to them of a merger with Delta." And if Delta opts for a United option, "then Northwest clearly feels a pressure to protect itself in the marketplace and will look for a [new] partner," says Oberstar, who is also chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
I made platinum on Delta. Wonder if I'll get to use it? Ugh, I hate United's program. Delta - Today In the Sky - USATODAY.com |

This time, there was fog at Heathrow and we ended up having to divert to Cardiff to get more fuel... where refuelling ended up taking over 2 hours. On the face of it, this could easily have been a bad experience in which I suppose I could have sat there thinking of ways to blame United. What redeemed it for me was United's Channel 9, which lets you listen to the cockpit's conversations with Air Traffic control. This is a feature which is, I think, unique to United.
Wow, thats really cool. Johnnie Moore's Weblog: United Channel 9 |

Mr. Holloway, who lives in a housing complex designed for the frail elderly, suffers from complex health problems usually associated with advanced age: chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, kidney failure, a bleeding ulcer, severe depression, rectal cancer and the lingering effects of a broken hip. Those illnesses, more severe than his 84-year-old father’s, are not what Mr. Holloway expected when lifesaving antiretroviral drugs became the standard of care in the mid-1990s. The drugs gave Mr. Holloway back his future. But at what cost?

Colonic explosions: In the early days of colonoscopies, attempts to burn off polyps in the colon ignited explosive hydrogen gas in the colon of several unlucky people, sometimes with tragic results. The colon-cleansing preparations people now take the night before a colonoscopy have solved the problem. Says Levitt: "I've never heard of an explosion in someone who's had a decent prep. But until they used these prep solutions, there was a problem with explosions.''

The Wright brothers' first priority was to patent their airplane, and they duly received their patent in 1904. It didn't just cover their specific design, but the whole concept of three-axis control - being able to independently steer the aircraft in pitch, roll, and yaw - that was critical to powered flight. This patent became a mighty weapon that the Wright brothers used for the next thirteen years to sue the bejesus out of anyone else who tried to fly an airplane. It may not have been a problem if the Wrights themselves had kept working on aircraft design, or if the original flyer had been good enough to license. But neither was the case - the Wrights became so consumed with their lawsuits that they had no time or energy left for further work, essentially becoming the SCO of the early aviation age. And their airplane design, while innovative, was mostly innovative in the wrong ways.
