] Emory University officials sent warning letters to more
] than 500 surgery patients at the school's medical center
] after a brain surgery patient tested positive for a fatal
] disease similar to the human version of mad cow disease.

Terrifying. Mmmmm... I feel like a Big Mac.

] 'Bring them on!" President Bush challenged the early
] Iraqi insurgency in July of last year. ... Almost
] every day, in campaign speeches, Bush speaks with
] bravado about how he is "winning" in Iraq. "Our strategy
] is succeeding," he boasted to the National Guard
] convention on Tuesday.
]
] But, according to the US military's leading strategists
] and prominent retired generals, Bush's war is already
] lost.

[ There's not even a single key quote to meme here. Every single paragraph is damning. Ret. Gen. Odom led the NSA, Ret. Gen. Hoare headed Cent. Com., Jeffrey Record and W. Andrew Terrill are professors of strategy at two US war collges.

These aren't armchair pundits like we are... they know a few things, and they bring up failures on a ton of fronts. Go read it. -k]

Zifty.com - Localized version of Kozmo.com
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:03 pm EDT, Sep  6, 2004

Zifty.com is a Atlanta-only version of Kozmo.com. They delievery pretty much anywhere inside the perimeter (and noticeably north of I-20...) with the typical Kozmo-ish stuff: Foods, snacks, movies and games.

update their delivery space is more midtown centered. Map is here: https://www.zifty.com/deliveryarea.html

On the cool side, all the food is from local businesses, like Jakes' ice cream, etc.

Me: $5 for cigarettes... if you're drunk and there's no store near, its nice. Food is a bit overpriced, and takes 90 minutes if its from a restaurant, so plan ahead. Snacks are quick, though.

Kaiju Big Battel is a live event series that revolves around tournament-style performances, which are a tongue-in-cheek hybrid of American pro-wrestling, Japanese-monster-movie mayhem, and lowbrow pop-culture. Click here for the full "About Kaiju Big Battel".

One Hand Clapping: Criticism of Annie Jacobson's story
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:51 am EDT, Jul 19, 2004

] One of the things I learned in the years I have spent in
] law enforcement at both the federal and local level is
] that witnesses of traumatic events relate few details.
] When people are frightened or otherwise psychologically
] shocked, their minds don't record movies, but snapshots,
] and not many of them, either.
]
] Annie's story has a wealth of detail, so much that I find
] myself disbelieving that she could have been as afraid as
] she says she was.

I thought I'd memed this guy in the past, but in any case he is a fucking bad ass. Every whacked out questionably legal high tech doomsday weapon that you and your buddies have always talked about making but no one ever bothered to actually start working on THIS guy has made. And its all right here.

GFX: Porting Gothello, An exercise in porting Linux applications to Windows is made easier using GUI toolkits like GTK+.
Topic: Miscellaneous 6:52 am EST, Mar 15, 2004

Unfamiliar software has been a frequent excuse for Windows users not to switch to Linux. A lot of work is being done to undo this reasoning, not by bringing closed Microsoft software to Linux, but by bringing the benefits of open-source Linux software to Windows. Cross-platform versions of most popular Linux desktop applications are available today, including the GIMP image editor, StarOffice/OpenOffice office suite, the Mahogany e-mail client, the Amaya WYSIWYG Web Editor and many web browsers, including Mozilla and Opera. These all run on Linux and Windows, and some even support Macintosh.

Using the LibTarga Files
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:26 pm EST, Mar 13, 2004

] LibTarga is a library for reading and writing images in
] the TARGA image file format. It was written by Alex Mohr
] for use by students in CS559, and for other graphics
] projects. This document is meant to give you a basic idea
] of how to use libtarga within the CS environment at UW.
] For more complete documentation Refer to the code.

A nice, simple library for reading and writing all varities of Targa Files. Targa is a VERY simple image format, so it is convenient for storing your shit when doing image/video analysis. Also, I use targa because 3DSMax can output animations to a series of Targas, one for each output frame. I use these as test input for my video analysis code.
