Solaris™ Performance and Tools: DTrace and MDB Techniques for Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris - $34.99
Topic: Miscellaneous 3:56 pm EDT, Mar 21, 2007

Book Description

"The Solaris™Internals volumes are simply the best and most comprehensive treatment of the Solaris (and OpenSolaris) Operating Environment. Any person using Solaris--in any capacity--would be remiss not to include these two new volumes in their personal library. With advanced observability tools in Solaris (like DTrace), you will more often find yourself in what was previously unchartable territory. Solaris™ Internals, Second Edition, provides us a fantastic means to be able to quickly understand these systems and further explore the Solaris architecture--especially when coupled with OpenSolaris source availability."

p2p.wrox.com Forums - zxml.js exception in Firefox but works fine in IE
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:28 am EDT, Mar 14, 2007

This isn't a zXML error. You must pass a value to send() in Firefox, even if the value is null. So you should be doing:

oReq.send(null);

In firefox 2.0+, on Windows, you cannot do a GET XMLHttpRequest and send(), you must send(null). Been getting away with this for months, until tonight when Firefox auto-upgraded.

This repo man drives off with ocean freighters
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:49 am EST, Mar  2, 2007

When the repair company charged four times the agreed-upon price to fix a huge dent in the stern, Hardberger said, the owner refused to pay. Port officials then denied the vessel a clearance to leave.

Hardberger and the ship's agent got permission to move the ship to a port anchorage under the ruse that she needed refueling. The new location would make it possible for a crew to reach the vessel by launch.

Then, with everything in place, Hardberger waited for the weekend of Greek Easter, a religious festival marked by rich pageantry and widespread celebration.

To help the coast guard enjoy the event, Hardberger arranged for the ship agent to drop off several cases of ouzo at the station, which overlooked the port.

At 2 a.m. on a Sunday, a crew boarded the unattended freighter and sailed it out of the harbor unnoticed.

Hardberger, who coordinated the operation from shore, sat in a seaman's bar in Piraeus with friends, including the ship's agent. In the ancient port, they toasted their success with vodka.

As experience builds up we're finding a few knobs of ZFS that we want to experiment with. As we gains a better understanding on them, our aim is that tuning them will not be necessary in the future and there is already work in progress to offset the need to tune them. But for those ZFS users that lives on the bleeding edge of performance, I figured this ztune script can come in handy.

Given that we started to have enough understanding on the internal dynamics of ZFS, I figured it was time to tackle the next hurdle : running a database management system (DBMS). Now I know very little myself about DBMS, so I teamed up with people that have tons of experience with it, my Colleagues from Performance Engineering (PAE), Neelakanth (Neel) Nagdir and Sriram Gummuluru getting occasional words of wisdom from Jim Mauro as well.

Note that UFS (with DIO) has been heavily tuned over the years to provide very good support for DBMS. We are just beginning to explore the tweaks and tunings necessary to achieve comparable performance from ZFS in this specialized domain.

We knew that running a DBMS would be a challenge since, a database tickles filesystems in ways that are quite different from other types of loads. We had 2 goals. Primarily, we needed to understand how ZFS performs in a DB environment and in what specific area it needs to improve. Secondly, we figured that whatever would come out of the work, could be used as blog-material, as well as best practice recommendations. You're reading the blog material now; also watch this space for Best Practise updates.

Freakonomics guy talking about the economics of crack dealing.

"How do you feel about being poor and black in America?

A) Very good.
B) Good.
C) Bad.
D) Very bad.

or as it turned out:

E: Fuck you!"

Thats verbatim. This is a funny talk, at times, but the subject matter is very serious, and very interesting.

For instance, the average crack dealer made $3.50 an hour, and stood a 7% annually of being murdered.

But Drama and Cannon’s studio was not a bootlegging plant; it was a place where successful new hip-hop CDs were regularly produced and distributed. Drama and Cannon are part of a well-regarded D.J. collective called the Aphilliates. Although their business almost certainly violated federal copyright law, as well as a Georgia state law that requires CDs to be labeled with the name and address of the producers, they were not simply stealing from the major labels; they were part of an alternative distribution system that the mainstream record industry uses to promote and market hip-hop artists. Drama and Cannon have in recent years been paid by the same companies that paid Kilgo to help arrest them.

Wow, we need to protest at their court date.

I misconfigured swap which killed server number 1.

Server number 2 is supposed to be pre-loaded with 6/06, but it fails to boot, nor will it boot the Solaris DVD.

My Macbook died too. It will not let me login. I login, it logs me out before I can do anything. Very clever.

We have this great software and five web demos next week, and all my computers just died, so I can't show it to anyone. Brilliant. I just have this Sony VAIO running windows XP, for IE testing and gotomeetings. But there is no server, so there can be no gotomeetings.

I am so screwed.

So I'll be waitlisting at the Apple store all day tomorrow, if anyone wants to come buy me coffee.
