CIO - Understands the _business_ information needs of the company, customers, suppliers, management (at all levels), and stockholders. These are the _stakeholders_ of the corporation's operations - and might be extended to also include government (local, state, national) and even the public. Directs the (re-) architecting of company information domains and business processes (sales, operations, supply chain, financial, human resources, etc...). Deals with information needs and business processes, but not information technology architectures, per se. Works with the CEO/President on business models and vision issues, and collaborates with business VPs to learn their needs and develop new concepts. Works with the CTO to design appropriate systems. The CIO is a _business_ person with IT experience. CTO - Understands current technology alternatives and capabilities, including strengths/weaknesses and tradeoffs of various choices in the hierarchy of applications, databases, transactional systems, operating systems, networking, platforms... other hardware. Takes direction on business needs from the CIO (or CEO/President, if there isn't a CIO), and plans for technology evolution of the company systems. The CTO is a _technology_ person having some familiarity with the company business model. It's a division of responsibilities proceeding from CIO overloads in the early '90s. (CIOs came first, recently supplemented by CTO positions.)

Building an entrepreneurial advisory board entails assessing the company's needs, developing a list of candidates whose profiles line up, and then asking them to join, writes the founder of four companies in the human-resources field. "I've got (fill in the name of the high-profile business person) on my advisory board," said the emerging entrepreneur to the group of angel investors. "When was the last time you saw him?" asked the angel at the table in the rear of the room. The response? Blank stare. For the entrepreneur looking to grow a business through equity financing or the business owner simply looking to limit the stupid mistakes caused solely by inexperience, an advisory board may be just the answer, if it's built right. I have had four businesses, with advisory boards of varying size and activity levels and value to the company. Like all entrepreneurs, I did some things right, some things wrong, and cultivated a lot of experience. Being in the executive search field – my current company, Talent Management Group, is a recruiter - I also advise my growth company clients on strategy and recruiting for their board.

LAS VEGAS, Sept. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bally Gaming and Systems, a business unit of Alliance Gaming Corp. , announced today plans to expand its engineering operations by opening a wholly owned offshore development center in India to improve the speed and quality of product enhancement deliverables and customer service levels. The new Bally development center will be located in Chennai, a growing technology hub of India. This new offshore team is expected to augment end-to-end design and development initiatives currently taking place in Bally's U.S.- and European-based development centers.

The 1984 gas leak in Bhopal, India, was a terrible tragedy which understandably continues to evoke strong emotions even 21 years later. In the wake of the release, Union Carbide Corporation worked diligently to provide immediate and continuing aid to the victims and set up a process to resolve their claims. All the claims arising out of the release were settled 16 years ago at the explicit direction and with the approval of the Supreme Court of India. This web site provides our statement regarding the tragedy, details our response, and other historical and legal information about the incident.
Union Carbide bought this domain to circulate a non-independant report that mostly clears them of wrongdoing in the world's largest industrial accident ever. This is pretty disturbing to me, for some reason. Bhopal Information Center |
