A must read is this article from the NYT that talks about happiness as a better measure of a country's wealth than GDP. Bhutan is seeking to avoid the pitfalls of the race for production/consumption evident in capitalist societies by creating a metric by which to measure happiness as a complement to GDP. This metric is expected to have a profound effect on local and global policies, and similar metrics are already being examined around the world.
