The iPhone 5 is being prepared to be unveiled in September. Apple is reportedly also in negotiations with Verizon Wireless for FaceTime. How will that affect iOS developers?

The iPhone 5 didn't appear on stage when Steve Jobs unveiled the future of iOS last week, but 9to5Mac reports that it's currently scheduled to be unveiled in September. According to the iOS 5 SDK, the next iPhone will be available in at least two models - codenamed N93 and N94. Verizon has already confirmed twice that their version will offer global roaming capability like offered by a range of other Verizon phones.

Unlike 9to5Mac, we do not believe that there's going to be one specific model for Verizon Wireless and AT&T, as it's more likely that we'll see GSM and GSM + CDMA models. The GSM version will cater to GSM carriers like always (with added frequency support for T-Mobile), while the GSM + CDMA model will cater to CDMA carriers. As such, whenever the iPhone 5 is released, it'll fit nicely into the carrier system.

Over the last few months, there's been a lot of talk about Apple looking to disrupt the carrier system. However, the massive iPhone 3GS + iPhone 4 success we've been witnessing in the last half year, comes as a result of the opposite. Carriers have turned Apple into a success by letting their subscribers afford owning an iPhone. Should Apple choose to step on carriers' toes, the fun will disappear as quickly as it appeared.

According to 9to5Mac, Apple is reportedly in negotiations with Verizon Wireless for allowing FaceTime usage on the carrier's 3G EV-DO network. Should Apple want you to use key iCloud features over the same network, they'll probably enter into further negotiations. According to Daring Fireball, carriers were not aware of iCloud until you and I heard about it. As such, we could easily be talking 2025 before iCloud becomes fully operational on carrier networks on a global scale.

As far as iMessage is concerned, there have been numerous reports about it being the kind of service that will make SMS redundant. When Verizon Wireless introduced the KIN phones last year, we hoped those phones would pave the way for a new generation multimedia messaging like iMessage represents. What features the next iPhone will have is a question that has given rise to a vast range of speculations. Over the last few months several iPhone successor features were discussed by tech websites and in the blogosphere. Some rumors were supported by image leaks, sources from manufacturing partners while other features were thought based on what competitors offer.

Now, it looks like the 8 megapixel camera is one feature that's finally confirmed and OmniVision has received an order from Apple for the supply of 8 MP camera sensors.

Following are the latest information about the next iPhone, which may be either called iPhone 4GS or iPhone 5.

New iPhone 4GS (codenamed N94), should have an 8 mega-pixel camera with OmniVision's CMOS sensor and Taiwan-based Largan's lens, with Sony and Kantatsu as back up suppliers, FBR Capital Markets analysts wrote in a note to clients.
DigiTimes has reported that OmniVision will supply about 90 percent of image sensors for the Apple iPhone 5. Sony will get only 10 percent of the pie. This should be a letdown for Sony, as it had announced a couple of months back that it would supply all of iPhone 5 camera sensors.

Also, the brokerage believes Apple's iPhone 4GS is not a 4G LTE phone as that technology is still a power/battery hog).
The new iPhone isn't likely to include LTE (4G) functionality said Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek. Instead, it will be an upgraded iPhone 4, most notably with a faster processor and some updated specs.

"According to our industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support," he writes in a research note.
The A5 processor is the same chip that Apple rolled out to power its iPad 2. As for LTE, he says the Qualcomm LTE chipset Apple would have used "is currently not achieving yields sufficient for inclusion in the iPhone 5."

The next iPhone will use a Qualcomm baseband and not an Intel/Infineon baseband.

"We still expect the device to be announced or launched just after Labor Day, though sales and builds to more meaningfully ramp in mid- to late-September," analyst Craig Berger said.

Last month, an image leak had suggested that the soon-to-arrive Apple iPhone 5 will not feature a rear camera accompanied by LED flash to its right.

Apple still has time, but in dwindling quantity, to reclaim 2011 for itself and turn this into the year of the iPhone 5 after all. The clock ticks, the release date slips, consumers gripe at having to wait longer than they’d hoped, and it’s still not clear when that cycle will end in the form of an iPhone 5 launch. In the meantime, in terms of sales, 2011 has been the year of the Android phone. That’s shocking, however, considering that most Android users will admit they’d rather have an iPhone and/or that they believe the iPhone to be the better platform. With the iPhone 5, Apple finds itself in the position of theoretically being able to bring many or most of these current Android users into the iPhone camp, yet faces a bar set high by the expectations which come with any new Apple product. Here’s a breakdown of the various types of Android users, and what Apple must to in order to win them over with the iPhone 5.

iPhone lovers on Verizon: When the iPhone launched in 2007, they shrugged and said “I’ll take one of those when it comes to Verizon.” Then the Verizon iPhone 4 arrived earlier this year and most of them decided to wait for the Verizon iPhone 5 because either they didn’t want the aging iPhone 4 by then, or in more cases, they weren’t yet upgrade eligible and decided that it wasn’t worth an extra $200 or $250 above sticker price. These folks are pretty much automatic for the iPhone 5 when it sees release date or when they’re upgrade eligible, whichever comes second.

Sprint and T-Mobile holdouts: The iPhone 5 should be available on T-Mobile if and when the AT&T merger becomes real. Seeing a Sprint iPhone is more of an open ended question mark. Short of that, the question for users of those carriers who wish they had an iPhone is whether they’ll be willing to move to a Verizon iPhone 5 after years of refusing to move to AT&T to get the iPhone.

Hardcore geeks: These are the kind of technology geeks who don’t want to own a device unless they can physically take it apart for the sake of putting it back together again, and can hack its software system into becoming less of a functional product and more of a pet project. Gevey SIM is a hardware-based unlocking method for iPhone 4 which works with most basebands. Today, we received a tip from a reader who has tested Gevey SIM on iOS 5… and it works! It involves using a thinner-than-normal SIM card which actually needs to be inserted along with the actual SIM card into the SIM slot. Then, you have to follow a few steps such as dialing an emergency number (112), turning Flight Mode off and on etc. to unlock your iPhone 4. It works without jailbreaking.
The method is a controversial one as its legitimacy is questionable based on the fact that it is not exactly right to misuse emergency calls.
We wrote about it before back in March and stated that it worked only up to iOS 4.3. Well, it appears that Gevey SIM’s magic still works on iOS 5. I’d like to remind our readers that iOS 5 has already been jailbroken already. iPhone Dev Team member MuscleNerd tweeted a screenshot on 7th June showing iSSH (a jailbreak-only app) running on an iPod touch 4G with iOS 5. Today, Redsn0w 0.9.8 was released as a tethered jailbreak for iOS 5 Beta. Instructions on how-to jailbreak iOS 5 can be found here. Even though the jailbreak, as of now, is tethered. But as time goes by, there probably will be an untethered jailbreak available. The Dev-Team has shown time and time again just how capable they are and we can trust them to deliver again when iOS 5 comes around. iOS 5 is releasing this fall and there is a lot to look forward to. Apple announced a number of initiatives at this years developer conference , but those let down about not seeing an iPhone 5 are missing the point, analysts say.

The company made a splash in San Francisco as Steve Jobs took to the stage at Apple's keynote to introduce an update to the Mac OS X, the new iOS 5 and the iCloud.
While there was no mention of the anticipated iPhone 5, industry watchers contend that the iOS 5 and iCloud announcements will almost ensure that the next iPhone - whenever that comes - will be a hit.

" We continue to think investor fixation on next-gen iPhone 5 timing misses the point, as it's the Platform not the Device that matters," said Robert Cihra of Caris & Co.

Indeed, Apple does benefit from a rich eco-system of content in media, capitalizing on a time where consumers demand more than simply hardware when they make a purchase.
Apple has long since defined the user experience with the hardware and iTunes serving the media to consume. The iCloud now takes the PC out of this equation and lets users just buy the phone, but still pay Apple for content and apps.

Competitors like Motorola, Nokia and RIM have attempted their own eco-system -- either building their own or aligning with Google -- but none have had the success Apple has.

"Much more than just a simple back-up, sync or music streaming service, we consider iCloud a whole new, if not 'ultimate,' leg to Apple's ability to grow and leverage its booming iOS thin- client strategy, closed- loop iTunes relationship, and software-driven ecosystem," Cihra said.

In April Caris' same analyst told clients that Apple is no longer a "hit product company," driven by timing.

"It's not the hardware that matters," Cihra wrote at the time, "...actually, it's the software+hardware+services in a fully-integrated vertical platform. As we've said repeatedly, iOS IS the 'what's next?' for Apple."

With cloud-based functionality integrated into the next iOS, promising newer services like digital lockers and access to unbridled computing power, the prospects for the next iPhone look bright, even if the timing is uncertain.

iOS 5 had just been showcased at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 6. Only 24-hours later, the infamous Apple hacker group iPhone Dev Team announced they had successfully jailbroken the just-released beta version of the new OS. This is good news to those who are looking to buy iPhone 5 and unlocking its full potential.

The jailbreaking announcement came June 7 via Twitter by the member of iPhone Dev Team known only as MuscleNerd. He stated he had accomplished the deed using the Limera1n application with a tethered boot. MuscleNerd also stated that Apple had not given him too many surprises in trying to prevent an iPhone 5 jailbreak. He also posted two photos as evidence.

Of course, the iOS jailbreak was not done on an iPhone 5. It was performed on a fourth-generation iPod Touch with the beta version of the iOS 5 software that was released to developers shortly after it was unveiled at WWDC. The jailbreak allows for a third-party applications installer, known as Cydia, to be installed on the
iPhone 5. Once installed, Cydia allows users to circumvent iTunes and install apps that are not available through the official Apple App Store.

Along with a photo the homescreen of the jailbroken iPod, which displayed the Cydia logo, MuscleNerd released a second photo displaying the S SH iOS app showing that access had been obtained to the device’s root-level file system.

Because this jailbreak was done through a tethered boot, it means that the jailbreak is not permanent. The next time the iPhone 5 reboots, it will go back to its unjailbroken state. Jailbreaking the iPhone 5 again requires following the tethering and jailbreak process during each boot.

Past iOS jailbreaks used an untethered method. The untethered method is a more permanent solution to jailbreaking, allowing the phone to remain jailbroken until the next software update is installed.

The iPhone 5 news that the iOS 5 jailbreak came so soon did not come as a major surprise. The previous iOS version, iOS 4 gold master, was jailbroken in the same timeframe, a single day after being released to developers.

Apple intends to release a full version of iOS 5 to consumers this autumn. The iOS 5 jailbreak was performed on a beta version released only to registered iOS developers for the purpose of making sure their apps are fully compatible. The last iOS release went through 4 beta versions, with major updates and changes in each version, before the release was made final and public. It is expected iOS 5 will go through a
similar process, and the iOS 5 jailbreak may not function with later versions.

Undoubtedly, hacker groups such as iPhone Dev Team will be working diligently on new jailbreaks throughout the beta-testing process. An iPhone 5 jailbreak method will assuredly be found no matter what changes apple makes to the software before its final release.

LTE iPhone 5 Coming This Fall?

If you're jonesing for a 4G LTE iPhone 5, you may only have to wait until this fall – and move to the United Arab Emirates. Or not.

"Yes, we are in talks with most smartphone manufacturers including Apple on the rollout of the 4G handset, iPhone 5 later this year," UAE wireless carrier Etisalat spokesman Ali Al Ahmad told GulfNews.com."

Although Al Ahmad's statement clearly refers to the iPhone 5 as being a "4G handset", his follow-up statement was a bit more muddy: "As the first telecom organisation to roll out the 4G network, LTE, in the Middle East," he said, "we have already started talking to them for the handsets and chipsets in them."

Well, one would certainly hope that Etisalat would be talking with Apple about handsets and chipsets, but what Apple might be telling them could very well be: "GSM or CDMA – your call."

After all, recent rumors have moved the LTE iPhone 5 launch into 2012 due to yield problems experienced by Qualcomm, supplier of LTE chips. Etisalat's LTE network is scheduled to light up in the third quarter of this year.

According to the market-watchers at DigiTimes who spoke with anonymous industry sources, "Apple is likely to delay the launch of its LTE-enabled iPhones to 2012, said the sources, noting that the industry had also long been skeptical about the launch of LTE iPhones in 2011 as the implementation of LTE networks has not yet matured."

Also tossing cold water on Al Ahmad's comment is a statement made earlier this year by Sam Greenholtz, and analyst at Telecom Pragmatics, who told The Street in February that he had spoken with the ever-loquacious "people close to the matter", who told him that an LTE iPhone was "aimed for a June/July launch next year."

And recall that Apple COO and Steve Jobs stand-in Tim Cook said during the company's Q2-financials conference call in April that "the first generation of LTE chipsets forced a lot of design compromises with the handset, and some of those we are just not we are just not willing to make."

We suggest reading two possible meanings into "design compromises": battery life and cost of parts. Apple would most certainly not want to take the marketing hit that lower battery life would deal them, and neither would it be happy to tighten its margins by paying more for LTE chipsets.

That said, we are merely speculating – as is par for the course when dealing with matters Cupertinian. Al Ahmad may be spilling actual LTE beans, he may simply be in error, or he may be angling for some worldwide ink for Etisalat.

Looking for more on the upcoming iPhone 5? The constant rumor mongering seems to be giving us much to expect about the next iteration of the Apple iPhone. After all those sweet little info the little bird has already brought to our midst, we now hear Apple is incorporating something more on to iOS 5 that will allow 1080p video output support.

The latest iOS 5 beta 1 brings to us some good tidings, we must say. Apple has enabled 1080p video output support on the new software, which was something Cupertino had missed out earlier.

So what does the 1080p video output support on iOS 5 mean to you? If you are one of those on the go entertainment freaks who would want to sync movies onto your iOS device using iTunes so that you can watch them later on, you will be able to do that in full HD quality when the iPhone 5 comes out for real.

Folks at 9to5Mac have tested the feature and found the playback awesomely smooth. It has also been revealed that 1080p movies look great.

For iOS 5 upgradation you will need iTunes installed on your Pc or Mac , iOS5 beta firmware , iPhone 4 / 3GS , iPod , iPad , iPad2 , Connectivity cable and ways to get your UDID registered with Apple.

After you have downloaded iOS5Beta from one of muitiple torrent and files sharing sources, connect your iPhone or other compatible iOs device to your PC or Mac and start iTunes and make a backup of your phone as all data on first startup could be gone.

Go to your phone in Devices in iTunes and while pressing CTRL on PC and Alt/Option key on Mac click Restore and point it to the downloaded iOS 5 beta firmware .

After a while your iOS device will be updated.

Now comes the difficult part , if you don’t have your UDID registered with Apple , forget that the phone will work. So meanwhile the phone is updating , find a resource to register your UDID, we at SenseApplied will be a soon lauching a promotion to register a number of UDID for free ( market price is around US 7.00)

Once the iOS device is updated, you will be greated with the opening splash screen of iPhone and after that asked for your language , location and WiFi Connection . I updated the phone in my office and due to WiFi restricition was stuck with a dead device, but when I connected the phone to iTunes , it got activated and I was able to use my cellular provider’s data network.

So folks it’s very easy to upgrade to iOS 5 , just remember once you are on iOS5 , there is no turning back to iOS 4 neither iOS5 is publicly jail breakable so upgrade at your own risk.

iPhone 5 Could Debut In June/July

Despite widespread speculation that Apple’s iPhone 5 is facing delay, there is still hope that the most anticipated smart phone could make a June/July debut, according to some industry watchers. Recent rumors suggest we’re more likely to see a fall release than in summer but Steve Jobs and his crew could actually surprise us this month or the next. Here’s why:

1. Evolutionary rather than revolutionary changes seen
Apple, which is much more on software this year, is expected to release a product with an incremental update. iPhone watchers believe the next device will be an upgraded iPhone 4, most notably with a faster processor and some updated specs, instead of a major advancement. If this is the case, a roll-out of the more advanced product shortly after the White iPhone 4 would make a lot more sense than to delay its launch by three months.

2. iPhone 5 to come only in black
Speculations say the late release of the white version of iPhone 4 affected the release of its successor and because the white version is still selling pretty well, Apple might stretch its trend up until the following year. Countering this speculation, some industry watchers suggest Apple will launch the new iPhone only in black for a short period of time. This means the White iPhone 4, having a sense of exclusivity, can continue enjoying sales and would therefore not hinder an iPhone5.

3. Apple to announce iPhone 5 at a separate event
Steve Job’s silence on the iPhone 5 at the WWDC conference this week strengthened speculations that there won’t be any release this summer. However, news have also surfaced that Apple will hold a second event in June, separate from WWDC, to announce iPhone 5. This would then pave the way for a release in the fourth week of June.

Will Jobs surprise us all this June and unveil the next generation iPhone? We have several more days to wait and see.
