iOS 5 Major Deal For iPhone 4, Mystery For iPad 3, Nil For 3GS |

iOS 5 means different things to different iUsers, and the impact of the latest iOS generation on each of Apple’s various newer and older iDevices will range greatly in ways that are not yet one hundred percent clear despite iOS 5′s major features already being mostly on the table. Here’s a look at how iOS 5 is set to impact each of Apple’s existing iOS hardware devices new and old, from the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4 to the iPad 2 to older models of both, once it arrives this fall. iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4: major deal. iOS5 delivers by far the most fundamental major changes to Apple’s touchscreen operating system in its four-plus year history. And while the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 may end up with hardware additions required to enable some iOS 5 features which Apple has yet to reveal, the iOS 5 highlights Apple has already shown off appear to be fully functional on the iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4. In other words, iOS 5 is a big deal even for those who choose to remain one hardware generation behind when the iPhone 5 and iPod touch 5 surface. iPad 3 and iPad 2: mystery machines. While Apple has shown off quite a bit of iOS 5′s biggest features, it hasn’t yet made clear what will make iOS 5 special on the iPad’s larger screen. Add in the fact that the iPad 3 is still yet to be revealed, and there’s plenty of intriguing mystery on this front. iPhone 3GS: nil. Don’t expect iOS 5 to do too much on the iPhone 3GS, which has been around since 2009. It runs on a much slower processor family than the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5, whose A4 and A5 processors (respectively) represent Apple’s new in-house line of low power, high performance mobile chips. The best 3GS users can hope for is to be able to run basic versions of the highlighted features, and hope Apple doesn’t repeat last year’s fiasco in which iOS 4 was released for the previous iPhone 3G but it offered little and ran like crap until Apple got around to releasing iOS 4.2.1 which cleared up the stunningly slow performance issues. Our recommendation will likely be that those iPhone 3GS users who want to take advantage of the best of iOS 5 should get an iPhone 5 to go with it – and that’s something to keep in mind for those who are buying their first iPhone right now and are trying to decide whether to go with an iPhone 3GS or iPhone 4. But little is set in stone when it comes to iOS 5 as of today. Although Apple has shown off major features, it’s still in beta testing, isn’t finished, and doesn’t have a tightly defined release date. For more details on how iOS 5 will impact each of Apple’s newer and older iDevices, stay tuned. Here’s more on iOS 5. Apple on Friday released iOS 5 Beta 2 for developers, as discovered by ItsAllTech . The latest beta release brings WiFi sync to the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. What is New ? WiFi Sync was one of the features toted at Apple’s WWDC event, and allows iOS 5 users to sync their devices to their iTunes libraries without a computer. WiFi Sync is automatically activated when the iOS device is connected to a power source. In iOS 5.0 beta 2, wireless syncing is now available for the Mac. It requires iTunes 10.5 beta 2 and OS X 10.6.8 or Lion. You will see an option to enable wireless syncing when you connect your device to iTunes with the USB cable. It is recommended you perform your initial sync with a cable after restoring your device. Wireless syncing is triggered automatically when the device is connected to power and on the same network as the paired computer. Or, you can manually trigger a sync from iTunes or from Settings -> General -> iTunes Sync (same network as paired computer required). Be sure your device is plugged into a power source when performing Wireless syncs. If you find issues with apps, media and/or photos synced to your device, you can reset then resync. From Settings -> General -> Reset, choose Erase all Content and Settings. Then reconnect to iTunes and sync again. In this beta, iTunes may incorrectly report Photos as “Other” in the capacity bar. Photo syncing otherwise works as expected. Accounts

Apple is rumoured to be working on its own navigation software, which would allow it stop pre-loading Google Maps on its iOS devices. According to tech website PC Mag, although there haven't been any hints from the iPhone maker, the market is rife with news that the software giant is developing its own navigation and geo-location system for its latest operating system iOS 5. Mac Rumors first reported that the Maps App in iOS 5 contains a new section with third-party licenses intended to provide geolocation services to the company’s operating system. The rumors are also backed up by Apple’s acquisitions into the same arena. Apple acquired PlaceBase in September 2009 and Poly9 in July last year, both mapping and navigation service providers. The latest piece of news is in stark contrast with the announcement made by Google’s chairman Eric Schmidt in May this year. Schmidt announced, "We just renewed our Map and Search agreements with Apple, and we hope those continue for a long time," The legal disclaimer is said to contain names of companies including TomTom, Urban Mapping, CoreLogic and Localeze, giving a hint to some of the location-based services that Apple may be working on for its iPhone users. Why The Apple iPhone 5 Worries Android |

Apple is planning on two new iPhone smartphones for a September release, a development that should have rival Android concerned, analysts say. Mobile industry analysts say that Apple has already begun production on the next generation of its venerable smartphone, expected to feature the A5 processor from its iPad 2 cousin, and higher screen resolution. The roll out is expected not only to boost Apple revenue, but also wrench away the market leader position from arch-rival Google. At the moment, Google's Android platform reigns supreme among mobile users , having a healthy installation across a number of devices. But even the current iPhone models virtually halted this. Couple this with the upcoming iPhone 5, and what some dub the "iPhone Lite" analysts are predicting that Google may need to step down from its No. 1 spot. "In our opinion, this is just the beginning of Android's share loss in the U.S.," according to Needham analyst Charlie Wolf. Android commanded 36.2 percent of worldwide smartphone market share in March. But its month-to-month gain was just 3 percentage points, down from a 7.5-percentage-point gain in the December quarter, and a 9.5-percentage-point gain in the September quarter. The slowing is because the Android platform fell from 52.4 percent of U.S. smartphone sales to 49.5 percent in the quarter - Android's first sequential loss in any region, he writes. On the contrary, iPhone rose from 17.2 percent in December to 29.5 percent by March, according to IDC numbers. Google declined to comment. "The migration of subscribers to the iPhone on the Verizon network should accelerate this fall when Apple coordinates the launch of iPhone 5 on the GSM and CDMA networks. The iPhone could also launch on the Sprint and T-Mobile networks. Apple is also working to finish a cheaper version of the iPhone aimed at attracting customers in emerging markets. This device would use chips and displays of similar quality to today's iPhone 4, according to people familiar with the matter. Wolf believes it could even be a pre-paid phone, allowing for an emergence of what he calls an "iPhone Lite." "The only way these second-tier licensees can survive is to compete on price rather than features. This, in turn, most likely will trigger a price war between Android licensees that could even engulf the name brand vendors." September Release Date The next generation of Apple's smartphone is starting to hit factories, ramping up for a September release date. The consumer electronics giant has contracted out Catcher Technology of China, according to Jefferies & Co.'s Peter Misek, prepping for a production ramp-up in July. "Our checks and guidance from Catcher Technologies indicate component orders beginning for the iPhone 4S," Misek said. Catcher, the metal casing manufacturer for Apple, raised its outlook for its Q2 and for the second half, suggestion "greater scale on its aluminum unibody products," Misek explained. Misek told investors that Apple should be able to make 5 million to 10 million of the new phones in the September-ending fiscal Q4, and 17 million to 19 million iPhone of various models in that quarter, which would be an increase from his 16 million estimate for the current, June-ending quarter. IE9 in WP7 vs. iPhone iOS 5 With HTML5 |

There are several mobile internet browsers available to us all nowadays depending on the choice of smartphone we make. Microsoft have been working hard to produce a number of Windows Phone 7 devices each running the Mango OS, which recently received an update including a WP7 version of IE9. Today we have news from a review comparing it to the iPhone iOS 5 with HTML5. It appears that although the Mango update is something Microsoft should and can be very proud of, in terms of speed Safari in iOS 5 was shown in tests to surpass the IE Mobile 9. We previously brought you news comparing the results of a speed test which compared Apple’s iOS 4.3 browser against Google’s Android devices. Results revealed that the Android devices’ browsers were loading 52% faster than the Apple’s iOS. We also compared the latest browsers across three platforms including Firefox 4, Internet Explorer 9 and Chrome 10 in order to establish which one our readers found was the best. The result showed most readers preferred Firefox 4. After the Mango update, tests on IE9 in WP7 revealed a different set of results to when it was previously tested. The device was bringing up 25 frames per second compared to the Apple iOS and Android devices which were only managing less than 10. WinRumours’ Tom Warren also reported that Safari iOS 5 had surpassed IE9 previous results closing 31 frames per second. After further tests since the update those at The Next Web found that IE9 Mango was clocking 25 frames per second at the lowest and up to 45 frames per second, the device they used managed 41 frames per second. Proof of the results can be found in the images which were taken. Click the link above to see for yourself. These were inconclusive however as after running the Speed Reading test several more times, TNW were unable to get a reading higher than 32 frames per second, proving that the IE Mobile 9 speeds are quite variable. Also these results are all beta build tests meaning we would have to wait for the release of the actual builds before gaining conclusive results. Check out the full article for more details on what TNW found. What do you think of these results? Does the Speed Readings matter to you when choosing a mobile device? 11:55 am EDT, Jun 23, 2011 |
The recent round of rumors suggests that Apple iPhone 5 will come equipped with a dual-LED flash. DigiTimes reported that Taiwan-based firms Everlight Electronics, Edison Opto and Lite-On Technology could possibly be chosen as suppliers for dual-LED flash. Of the three, Edison is considered to have started shipping LED flash components to other branded phone makers. Edison specializes in the production of high-power LED components and is thus seen as strong contender to be selected by Apple. The rumor came into force after earlier reports suggested that Apple had reduced orders for LED flash units which it currently uses in iPhone 4. Apple is reported to have reduced orders for LED from Philips and was switching over to suppliers in the East. Apple is expected to plant an 8MP camera in its next edition of iPhone. It was earlier reported that Apple has placed an order for 90 percent of its 8MP camera sensors with OmniVision and the remaining 10 percent will be supplied by Sony. Sony CEO Howard Stringer had spilled the beans on Apple's 8MP camera plans in April while talking with WSJ about the affect of the Japanese earthquake on its factories. Other rumors center around an edge-to-edge display, A5 processor, 1080p video playback capability, 3.7-inch curved glass screen, voice recognition feature, tear-drop design and a SIM-less GSM and CDMA compatible phone design with 3-4 internal antennas. Also, Apple's recent patent release suggests that wireless charging will soon be available for Apple devices. The abstract of the patent talks about a wireless powered local computing environment which utilizes a near field magnetic resonance (NFMR) power supply to wirelessly charge devices configured with the wireless environment. Another patent filing suggests that future iPhone and iPads could be fire-proof devices. Apple's proposed invention provides a fireproof halogen-free resin. Materials made with the resin will not catch fire in case of a short circuit. PatentlyApple records the patent as: "Apple's proposed invention provides halogen-free flame retardants, resins that include halogen free flame retardants, and plastic components made from such materials. In some embodiments, the invention relates to a composite resin molded article having excellent flame retardancy, electric insulation properties, and crack resistance, and produces only negligible amounts of toxic substances during incineration, if any at all." Also, Apple was given a glasses-free 3D patent in December 2010. The patent was titled "Three-dimensional display system", a technology whic... Apple’s WWDC 2011-announced iCloud cloud computing service may attract instant popularity, says an RBC Capital Markets survey. In the survey it was found out that 150 million users, around 76 percent of iPhone users, will be joining iCloud soon after its official launch this fall. Apple users are also very much interested with iOS 5’s iMessage feature, the survey said. The RBC survey was conducted among 1,500 iPhone users between June 7 and 14. Attracting 150 million users in months after the release of an online service means great advantage for the company. With such a multitude of members, Apple iCloud will be competing with major online services like Google’s Gmail, micro blogging portal Twitter and Yahoo. All of the services have an average of 200 million users. Apple announced its much-awaited iCloud service at the company’s Worldwide Developer Conference 2011 early this month. Apple iCloud is meant as Apple’s cloud-based media service. The platform can automatically store data such as texts, images and audio from all iDevices, Mac computers and laptops. Users can have access to the iCloud storages from anywhere and from any Mac and iOS devices. This is what the fantastic feature of the celebrated iCloud service. Actually, there is nothing surprising to hear that Apple iCloud will attract 150 million users instantly, because Apple already has hundreds of millions of users. And in a time, cloud computing is gaining momentum, iCloud may rise in popularity. Apple To Launch Its Own Brand Of TV With iPhone 5 This September |

iPhone 5 rumor mill has been working overtime and the list of potential features keeps increasing but here is a break from the monotonous Apple iPhone could-be saga: a report which states that the Cupertino-giant will start making television displays.DailyTech citing a 'former Apple executive' states that Apple will start selling iOS-powered televisions. It further states that Apple will partner with a major OEM to sell branded TV sets. The report says that it will arrive this fall. Apple's motivation to do so, the quoted 'executive' qualifies, to beat Netflix by "bundling Apple TV and iTunes". The possible OEM partner is Samsung. The report sounds incredulous as Apple's DNA is to craft its own products sans any OEM participation. Apple as a company maintains complete control over the value chain - from the conception of a product to delivery of the product. Additionally, the report names Samsung as the OEM partner. Recently Apple filed a patent lawsuit against Samsung charging it of "slavishly copying" its product designs. The acrimonious battle led to both the company's demanding a view of their upcoming products. In the light of the lawsuit, the report chances that Apple will join hands with Samsung for the production of a TV is pretty remote. However, the television domain as such is not new for Apple as it has a product called Apple TV- a black puck like iOs device which allows a user to stream content from its other iOS devices iPhone, iPad, iPod and internet to the television. Apple TV is powered by the A4 chip. Apple TV hasn't seen success like its other iOS kin iPad and iPhone. Apple slashed the price of the device to $99 from $299 and yet it has failed to catch the imagination of users. Google also launched Google TV with Sony which uses its Android OS. It is a step ahead of Apple TV as it allows users to search the web on TV and allows a user to then access the content on TV screen. It also came pre-loaded with apps. Google TV is also failing to sell. Apple may join the TV domain as the segment is in need of disruption and Apple is great at re-inventing product segments. Also, recently Apple released its digital locker the iCloud at WWDC, which allows users to store documents, pictures, apps and music in the cloud. As Apple's cloud strategy matures it also offers videos to be stored in the cloud. Apple Television would be a great medium to leverage the cloud in the future. Apple also recently unveiled a technology called Thunderbolt I/O which supports high-resolution displays and high-performance data devices through a single, compact port. It is currently available on iMac and MacBook Pro. It allows a user enough bandwidth to daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub or switch. Thus, Apple is coming up with devices which allow high-bandwidth connection possible which could further delay any Apple Television plans. Currently Apple manufactures 27-inch LED Cinema Display which can be connected with a Thunderbolt I/O. However, whether Apple will take this a step further to launch a TV is still open to assumption. Until then an iPhone 5 in September or fall seems a more plausible bet. With another batch of claims emerging in recent days, it’s clear that the iPhone 5 rumour mill is only going to pick up pace in the second half of 2011. One of the biggest questions is: exactly how fast is the iPhone 5 likely to be? It’s an especially interesting question with the current high-end of Android devices busting out the dual-core chipsets and pushing past the 1GHz clock speed. Will the iPhone 5 be able to keep up? Up the A5 All signs point to the likelihood that the iPhone 5 will sport the same A5 chip as can be found in the iPad 2. That’s would mean a dual-core 1GHz CPU that can match its Android rivals, and a GPU that can comfortably outperform them. The dual-core PowerVR SGX543 GPU found in the A5 is a formidable beast, and benchmarks show it to be considerably more capable at pushing complex 3D graphics around than the likes of the Nvidia Tegra 2 found in many high-end Android devices. Apple’s big on battery life, so it’ll be interesting to see if the iPhone 5′s A5 chip will be underclocked to any degree. This might not be necessary, as the A5 continues and extends the A4 chip’s ability to dynamically alter its clock speed to suit the needs of the app. Alternatives Are there any likely alternatives to the A5 chip for the iPhone 5? To put it bluntly: no. Last month it emerged that the recent iOS 4.3 update contained a big tip-off that the A5 was indeed to be at the heart of the iPhone 5. Buried in the code was a reference to a new device – codenamed N94AP – and its processor, the S5L8940. This is known to be the code for the A5 processor. It might seem to be a bunch of random numbers, but this is as close to an official confirmation of the iPhone 5′s processor as we’re going to get before release. With the iPhone 5 likely to ship a good four months after major rivals like the dual-core Samsung Galaxy S 2, Apple can scarcely afford to stand still in the smartphone arms race. The iPhone 5 will come with an A5 processor – dual-core, likely running at up to 1GHz, and with class-leading graphical capabilities.
