Once Samsung Galaxy Is In US, Will iPhone 5 Still Be Waited For?

The Apple rumor mill has been more active than usual this week, as those who claim to know (or at least have good reason to suspect) bring out some tantalizing tidbits about, among other things, the new low-end iPhone, iPad HD, device-to-device transfers, 1080p iTunes, and more.

* First up: September is the target launch date for a pair of new iPhones, according to various sources. One will be a direct attack upon the budget-conscious (read: Android) market, that rarest of creatures: a low-end iPhone. The other will be all about luxury, thinner and lighter but with a larger curved-glass screen and an 8-megapixel camera.

Then again, another rumor making the rounds say that the next iteration of the iPhone will have only the most minor of improvements over its predecessor, being an 'incremental upgrade' to save the real blockbusters for the (you guessed it) iPhone 6.

* The next iPad is rumored to be a more expensive model, sporting double the resolution (1048 x 1536, thus, the iPad HD). The target market is said to be visual professionals, the same sort of segment of the video- and photo-obsessed who would choose a MacBook Pro over a simple MacBook.

On one hand, the "iPad HD, NOT iPad 3" theory would support the contention that Apple is unlikely to bring out a new iteration of the iPad within months of their iPad 2 release. On the other hand, the trend of Apple's releases lately has been away from the pro market and toward the mass market, so a higher resolution iPad (and the serious expense that it would require) may not be in the cards.

* One more-than-likely (but still unconfirmed) rumor is that iTunes movies with a higher resolution -- namely, 1080p rather than the current peak of 720p -- are being provided to the iTunes Store for a September. This will correspond, apparently, with an upgrade to AppleTV's CPU (as well as all of those new iPhones and iPads that we've already mentioned).

* And finally, the least drastic but possibly most long-awaited possibility of all: wireless transfers between devices. Apple device owners would love to close the gap (so to speak), but the most evidence we really have is a patent application from last year that Ars Technica uncovered and concluded "we expect Apple to move on these transferring techniques soon, given the progress of similar technologies from competitors."

iPhone 5, iPad HD, HD iTunes, And More

Schaumburg, Illinois-based multinational technology company Motorola is prepping up to face up the forthcoming Apple iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S with a host of incredible smartphones. Motorola already has or has to launch a few smartphones with enhanced features to take on iPhone 5, possibly Apple’s next-gen smartphone, speculated to hit the stores this fall.

Motorola showcased its featured laptop dock-accompanied Motorola Atrix 4G at the CES 2011 in Los Angles early this year.

Since its launch a few months back, the device has been doing better in markets thanks to its 4-inch display with a 960x540 resolution, dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor and above all Google Android 2.2 or Froyo. Needless to mention, Motorola’s 11.6-inch laptop dock makes Atrix 4G unique.

Motorola Photon is a 4.3-inch successor to Atrix 4G. The device that also bundles the celebrated Motorola laptop dock runs on 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset. The device’s display has a 960x540 resolution.

Motorola Photon plays on Andorid 2.3 or Gingerbread and it has an 8-megapizel rear camera with 720p video capture capability and a front-facing VGA camera for video chatting.

Motorola Bionic, even being a CES 2011 product, is yet to hit the stores. The 4G smartphone is expected for an introduction on Verizon’s 4G LTE this summer.

The smartphone highlights a 4.5-inch display with a 960x540 resolution. Like Photon, it also has 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with 720p video capability and a front-facing VGA camera.
Motorola Droid X2 and Motorola Droid 2 Global are two other leading smartphone from the company. Both the Android devices remain hot in the market thanks to their enhanced features.

Motorola Gets Ready To Defy Apple iPhone 5 Or iPhone 4S

One of the iPhone's main competitors – the Samsung Galaxy SII – has been cut in price, fuelling speculation that the Korean company is lining up an iPhone 5 rival for launch in September.

The Samsung Galaxy SII is now available for £429.49 including delivery from Amazon – a price drop of £70. The Galaxy SII is Samsung's hottest phone, and also their best-selling, thanks to market-leading lightness and compactness, a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED screen and speedy Samsung Exynos 1.2 GHz dual-core chipset. Bundle that up with 16GB of storage, 1GB RAM, HD recording capacity and Android Gingerbread OS, and you've got a pretty convincing package even without a price cut.

Other manufacturers are also lining up their contenders for the smartphone crown, with HTC announcing a 3D dual-core handset for release in July – around the same time as LG's own 3D phone, the Optimus 3D. The HTC Evo 3D will run Android Gingerbread and be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.2GHz dual-core processor.

Like the Optimus 3D, the 3D tech will be similar to that found in Nintendo's 3DS (glasses-free) and its twin cameras on the back of the phone will be 5MP units. Users will be able to capture their own 3D photos and videos and play them back on the phone's screen, or on a 3D TV. The HTC Watch app will also allow movie fans to download 3D titles for watching on the handset's impressive screen.

Otherwise, the specs for the HTC Evo 3D look much the same as the popular HTC Sensation and, although prices have yet to be revealed, we’d be surprised if it wasn't pretty similar to the Sensation.

Galaxy SII Price Drop Heralds iPhone 5 Rival

The second iOS 5 beta was seeded to developers last week and it looks like Apple has "stepped up their game" to combat jailbreaking, as reported by Gizmodo. The latest beta also takes measures against downgrading.

According to a blog posted by iPhone Dev-Team (the hacker group responsible for PwnageTool and Redsn0w jailbreak tools), Apple has altered the iOS boot sequence to require a signed authentication ticket- which is yet to be (and may never be) hacked. This renders current "untethered" jailbreaks, used in tools such as PwnageTool and Redsn0w, effectively useless for iOS 5 at the moment. There is another tool that uses an exploit earlier in the boot process called limera1n that will still function for the foreseeable future, but is a "tethered" jailbreak.

While I have the utmost confidence in the Dev-Team hackers it appears Apple is really ramping up measures against jailbreaking in iOS 5. Some find it disconcerting that iPad 2 has still not been hacked either. The cat and mouse game has been raging since 2007 but it looks like the real battle has just begun.

Will iOS 5 Put An End To Untethered Jailbreaking?

Consumer technology giant Apple could release two models of iPhone - namely iPhone 5 and iPhone 4S - this September, according to an analyst at Deutsche Bank.

"We expect Apple to refresh the iPhone in September with two SKUs (stock keeping units); namely the iPhone 5 and a lower-end iPhone 4S handset," analyst Chris Whitmore wrote in a note to clients.

iPhone 5 will be the normal refresh of iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S is expected to be targeted at emerging markets or mid-range markets.

Analyst Ben Reitzes of Barclays Capital said the potential "4S" model in 2011 will be 3G and feature a faster processor, an upgraded 8MP camera and be optimized for use with the new iOS5.

One of the major benefits of this new product could be expanded carrier relationships in the US and abroad, given the Qualcomm baseband, Reitzes said.

With Nokia and Research In Motion struggling, the time is right for Apple to aggressively penetrate the mid range smart-phone market (i.e. $300-500 category) to dramatically expand its total addressable market and market share.

Research firm Gartner sizes the mobile handset market at 1.8 billion units in 2011 with feature phones/smartphones (priced $150 and above) representing 20 percent of the market or 362 million units.

Within the smartphone category, mid-range smartphones at an average selling price, or ASP of about $150 to $300 accounted for about 40 percent of smartphone shipments, while premium smartphones with more than $300 ASP accounted for about 60 percent.

The mid-range smartphone category is expected to grow at compounded annual growth rate of 32 percent to 2015, while the premium category is expected to grow 12 percent year-over-year.

"We expect Apple to move down market and target the emerging mid-range smarthphone market. We also believe Apple can standardize the design and components (iPhone 4 and iPod Touch) and leverage its scale to address this market profitably," Whitmore noted.

The analyst expects Apple to ship 74 million iPhones in 2011 and 90 million iPhone units in 2012.

In addition, a cheaper iPhone could also benefit Apple on margin front.

"We estimate an iPhone 4S model priced at $349 would likely be incremental to Apple's corporate gross margin suggesting it can push down-market without negatively impacting profitability," Whitmore said.

The analyst estimates the bill of materials (BOM) cost for a refreshed 16GB iPhone is about $170. These estimates exclude packaging, logistics and distribution costs, but does gives a sense of Apple's manufacturing margin across the handheld product portfolio.

Apple Could Unveil Two iPhones This September

The software hole involved in a popular method for jailbreaking Apple's iOS devices has reportedly been patched by the company as part of iOS 5, the free system software update that's due out later this year.

Digging through the beta version of iOS 5, which Apple made available to developers earlier this month, the iPhone Dev-Team--a group of hackers that targets Apple devices and is not to be confused with Apple's group that designs the iOS software--has discovered a change that threatens to close a loophole the group has long exploited.

"Those of you who have been jailbreaking for a while have probably heard us periodically warn you to 'save your blobs' for each firmware.... Saving your blobs for a given firmware on your specific device allows you to restore *that* device to *that* firmware even after Apple has stopped signing it," the group wrote on its blog yesterday. "That's all about to change."

The group says Apple has implemented a system that checks for a uniquely generated chunk of data each time the phone is restored. The problem there is that only Apple has the keys to unlock that code to let the phone boot up successfully. The end result is that jailbreaking methods that took advantage of that vulnerability could be endangered if that same system is employed in the final version of the software.

The iPhone-Dev Team notes that "there may still be ways to combat this" but that it's not showing its cards just yet, since it might give Apple time to make a fix ahead of a general release. "They've stepped up their game!" the group said of Apple's security efforts.

Apple's iPhone and other iOS devices continue to be hot targets for hackers. Ahead of the release of the App Store, one of the most popular reasons to jailbreak an iOS device was to be able to install third-party software. Even after the launch of the App Store, places like third-party app repository Cydia became destinations for developers who couldn't get their applications through Apple's approval process. Another popular reason was to unlock the iPhone so that it would work on other carriers, an option Apple now offers to U.S. buyers at a hefty price premium.

iOS 5 is due out this fall. Last week Apple released a second beta of the software to developers so they could use it to test their applications for compatibility with the OS and its new features. The first beta of the software was allegedly jailbroken by a member of the iPhone-Dev Team in less than 24 hours.

iOS 5 TargetsLongtime iPhone Jailbreak Exploit

On Friday Apple seeded the second external beta build of iOS 5 to developers. Labeled 9a5248d, the new build adds a couple of key features that weren’t enabled in beta 1 — specifically WiFi Syncing and OTA updates.

MacRumors notes that a couple of steps are required to enable WiFi Syncing on an iOS 5 device — namely, you have to connect via USB to iTunes and check the box that says “Sync over Wi-Fi connection” under Summary > Options:

In iOS 5.0 beta 2, wireless syncing is now available for the Mac. It requires iTunes 10.5 beta 2 and OS X 10.6.8 or Lion. You will see an option to enable wireless syncing when you connect your device to iTunes with the USB cable. It is recommended you perform your initial sync with a cable after restoring your device.

Wireless syncing is triggered automatically when the device is connected to power and on the same network as the paired computer. Or, you can manually trigger a sync from iTunes or from Settings -> General -> iTunes Sync (same network as paired computer required). Be sure your device is plugged into a power source when performing Wireless syncs.

If you find issues with apps, media and/or photos synced to your device, you can reset then resync. From Settings -> General -> Reset, choose Erase all Content and Settings. Then reconnect to iTunes and sync again.

AppleInsider notes that the plumbing for OTA updates also appears to have been activated in iOS 5 beta 2 (it actually checks when triggered) although no updates are currently pending.

Apple has also changed the look of notifications in iOS 5 beta 2, displaying lock-screen notifications in a larger font and including the icon of the app that’s sending the notification — like it does with the smaller lock screen notifications.

iOS 5 beta 2 Seeded To Developers With WiFi Sync, OTA Updates

The theory that iPhone 5 will be unveiled in September is gathering force by the day. A Morgan Stanley analyst has said Apple will begin the production of iPhone 5 in mid-to-late August, after apparently holding meetings with iPhone component makers in Taiwan last week.

Analyst Katy Huberty said "Apple’s next iPhone will begin production in mid to late August" and that the launch of the next generation iPhone could happen late in the third quarter, AppleInsider reported. Huberty revealed this in a note to clients after possibly talking to Apple's supply chain links in Asia, adding credence to earlier rumors that iPhone 5's full-scale commercial production was slated to begin in July/August.

The analyst also seemed to endorse the idea that a lower-priced iPhone 4 would hit the market soon as well. There have been talks suggesting that iPhone fans can now look forward to a surprise double offering from Apple, the iPhone 5 and a 'Lite' version of iPhone 4. The Lite version will have smaller and cheaper hardware components, and will be available at a smaller price, according to reports.

The iPhone 5 release date has been a hotly debated topic in recent past as Apple uncharacteristically delayed the launch of the next iPhone model at the annual June Developers’ conference.

Most observers now think the device will arrive in September, while some still hold on to the idea that it will be only in early 2012. They point out that Apple is giving final shape to iOS 5, its latest operating system, and the next iPhone will be delayed until the new OS rolls out.

A Bloomberg report has quoted two sources, who are familiar with the product, as saying that iPhone 5 will be unveiled in September and that it will have a smarter chip and a better camera, among a host of other bells and whistles.

According to analysts the iPhone 5 will come pre-loaded with the iOS 5. Apple fans were dejected that the tech giant broke with tradition this year and refrained from saying anything about the next generation iPhone in its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

Critics mused over Apple losing ground to a plethora of Android OS-based devices which are slated for arrival in the summer. Apple has already said the iOS 5 will hit the market in July, so it is believed that the next generation iPhones will come pre-loaded with the latest operating system, which has been enriched by at least 200 new features.

The latest report suggest that rather than choosing an early 2012 release date, Apple could unveil its best product as early as September, which will also help them cash in on some brisk holiday season sales. Waiting till 2012 would lead to several Android OS-based phones overtaking the iPhones in terms of features, frill and whistles. The competition has already got a lot tougher for Apple, and the arrival of Google’s Nexus 4G would all but annihilate Apple if it still decided to go ahead with iPhone 4.

iPhone 5 Production Will Begin In August; Launch Late In 3rd Quarter

Apple reinvented the mobile phone, and revolutionized the smartphone when it introduced the iPhone. It has been surpassed in overall market share by the me-too, copycat Android OS, and Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 is a worthy challenger as well, but this fall Apple has an opportunity to set the bar for the industry once again, and leave the competition in the dust with the iPhone 5.

1. Verizon (et al). The iPhone 5 will be the first new iPhone model introduced since the exclusivity with AT&T ended (no, the white iPhone does not count--not even a little). The Verizon iPhone 4 has been a huge success anyway, but many Verizon customers held off knowing that a new iPhone is just around the corner, and not wanting to be shackled to an iPhone 4 with 18 months left on the contract. The new unlocked iPhones will make a difference as well.

2. iOS 5. Apple has already shared with us the details of iOS 5. The new iOS will finally free the iPhone (and iPad) from the PC--syncing and updating wirelessly instead of requiring a physical connection to a USB port. The improvements in the iOS mail client, the addition of iMessage, tabbed browsing in the default Safari browser, and the behavior of the Notification Center will all contribute to the success of the iPhone 5.

3. iCloud. Along with iOS 5, Apple will also officially launch iCloud around the same time the iPhone 5 is expected. iCloud will enable effortless, seamless syncing of email, files, music, contacts, calendars, and other content between the iPhone, iPad, and Windows or Mac PCs.

4. The Specs. The iPhone 5 is expected to (or rumored depending on your perspective) to use the same dual-core A5 processor Apple uses in the iPad 2. The processor really just plays catch up to the status quo rather than blowing rival smartphones away, but Apple somehow squeezes better performance and a superior experience out of equivalent, or even inferior hardware.

5. The Camera. The smartphone is quickly replacing the point and shoot, and emerging as the camera of choice for most consumers. It has already put the nail in the coffin of the Flip video camera. But, there is more to digital photos than maxing the megapixels, and most smartphone cameras take inferior quality photos. Speculation suggests that the iPhone 5 will have an 8 megapixel camera, with dual-LED flash for better low-light photography, and that the iPhone 5 camera will set the bar for smartphone photos.

Some of this is based on speculation--we don't really know what the camera functionality or hardware specs will be just yet. But, just the things we already know for a fact are enough to make the iPhone 5 the king of the hill and leave all smartphone competitors playing catch-up.
