Is iPhone 5 - Faster A5 Processor And 8 Megapixel Camera?
Topic: Technology 5:04 am EDT, Jun 22, 2011

Apple plans to launch iPhone 5 in September, reportedly with some possible features like A5 processor and 8 megapixel camera.

Bloomberg reported citing two people familiar with the company's plan that the much-awaited iPhone 5 will feature a more powerful A5 processor that was added to iPad 2 earlier this year and an 8 megapixel camera. The people, who wished to remain anonymous, gave credence to rumors that Apple is working on an iPad with a higher resolution screen. They also said iPhone 5 will closely resemble its earlier iPhone 4 version.

Reports from various other websites have also pointed to similar details. A recent report from AppleInsider also said that Apple will begin production of its upcoming version of iPhone in August featuring the A5 processor and a high resolution 8 megapixel camera.

Sources also lent credibility to rumors of a low-cost iPhone. They said Apple is working on a low-cost version of the iPhone which will be targeted at emerging markets. The cheaper iPhone is likely to feature "chips and displays of similar quality to today's iPhone 4."

The report further said a new version of iPad is under process, whose resolution will be similar to iPhone 4. Currently, iPhone 4 boasts of a retina display with a 960 x 640 resolution. It has a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch.

According to an unverified report Taiwan's Economic Daily last week, Apple will unveil the iPad 3 later this year with an "image resolution 5-6 times higher than iPad 2". However, the Bloomberg report did not indicate when the next generation iPad will be released.

Radical New iPhone 5?
Topic: Technology 5:08 pm EDT, Jun 21, 2011

Here's your iPhone 5 rumor du jour: Apple's next-generation smartphone may feature a "radical" new design, one vastly different from that of the wildly successful iPhone 4.

BGR reports that Apple's upcoming iPhone will not be a minor upgrade to the iPhone 4, but rather a bold makeover that veers dramatically from the fourth-generation's eye-catching aesthetic. The new model may debut and ship in August, or arrive a month later at Apple's annual September event, which is traditionally reserved for iPod-related announcements, the report says.

Unfortunately, BGR's source fails to provide details on the next iPhone's design, an oversight that sends the imagination in overdrive. (Personally, I'd like a levitating, paper-thin case that folds easily in my pocket.) An earlier report from This Is My next suggests the new iPhone may sport a "teardrop" shape, a daring fashion statement that would set the iPhone apart from the smartphone pack--well, at least until the next Samsung phone arrives.

If It Ain't Broke

But seriously, does Apple really need to revolutionize the iPhone's look and feel? It's not as if the iPhone 4, despite its glitches, failed to find a market. In its fiscal second quarter that ended March 26, Apple shipped 18.65 million iPhones, up 113 percent from a year earlier. That's a lot of consumer love.

The iPhone 4 design has been an undisputed success. Why radically change something that people really, really like? Common sense tells me the "radical" redesign rumor is bunk. Then again, this is Apple we're talking about--always on the bleeding edge of industry design--so you never know.

A new look every year may be de rigueur in the smartphone industry these days. Personally, I'm fond of the Samsung Nexus S 4G's curved "Contour Display." It'll be interesting to see what Apple's designers come up with.

Whatever the iPhone 5 looks like, I'm sure it'll turn heads.

iPhone 5 Release Date - Now August ???

A "reliable source" has informed Boy Genius Report that Apple is readying its next iPhone for a release later this summer. The device is informally known as the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5, depending on whom you ask.

"According to our source," BGR reports, "Apple may hold an event in the beginning or middle of August to announce the new iPhone, with availability to follow in the last week of August."

Recent reports have said that an iPhone 4S will feature slightly upgraded internal components but will look fairly similar to the current iPhone 4. However, BGR's tipster said that the forthcoming device could look starkly different from its predecessor.

Writes BGR, "We have been told [...] to expect a radical new case design for the upcoming iPhone, though we have not been given any additional details surrounding the design of the new iPhone case."

Other rumors have suggested a September release date for the next iPhone handset. Still others have claimed that a true iPhone 5, featuring a whole new look and overhauled internal components, will make its way to market early in 2012.

New Rumors - iPhone 4S Coming In September/October; iPhone 5 In 2012
Topic: Technology 4:45 am EDT, Jun 21, 2011

Component manufacturers have begun to receive orders for Apple Inc.'s iPhone 4S and the production ramp is expected to start in July for an iPhone 4S launch in September/October 2011, Jefferies said in a note to clients.

Our checks and guidance from Catcher Technologies indicate component orders beginning for the iPhone 4S. We could see an upside surprise to September iPhone orders. We believe iPhone units will reaccelerate due to: new lower-cost iPhone, iPhone 4S in the Fall followed by iPhone 5 in June 2012, and more carriers," said Peter Misek, an analyst at Jefferies.

Misek believes the likelihood of the iPhone 5 launch in September including LTE is now remote. According to his industry checks, the device should be called iPhone 4S and include minor cosmetic changes, better cameras, A5 dual-core processor, and HSPA+ support. He believes Apple had hoped for the LTE chipsets to be ready for the September launch as a best-case scenario but was planning a version without LTE called the iPhone 4S.
Apple said in a statement at the WWDC that its iOS 5 is not ready to roll out until fall. Fall sets in, in the third week of September and it refers to a time frame until November end. If Apple gets iOS 5 ready later in the fall, then iPhone 5 will have to take the lag as well.

"As expected, the WWDC keynote focused on software and cloud services with mostly me-too capabilities announced. We expect this to be Apple's first round of cloud service announcements with round two in the Fall (likely focused on video) and round three in 2012," said Misek.

Misek expects the launch of a low-cost iPhone in the fall that is targeted at prepaid and emerging markets. He had thought Apple would differentiate the new low-cost iPhone (likely a costed-down version of the 3GS) by not having iOS 5 available for it (he was also concerned that the hardware might not be up to speed).
In addition, Misek believes this fall the iPhone 3GS, 4, and iPhone 4S will be able to run iOS 5, which will be necessary to run the new cloud-based services. This will maintain the unity of the Apple iOS code base, and likely increase low-cost iPhone shipments, but likely greater cannibalization of higher-end iPhones as differentiation is lessened.

"Based upon our checks and public comments by Verizon and others, we are in the camp that expects only an incremental iPhone upgrade (iPhone 4S) this September, which includes a dual-core processor and improved imaging. We expect the iPhone 5 to arrive by next January, which will include 4G and ca... [ Read More (0.4k in body) ]

The iPhone 5 will land on September 7th, and will com pre-loaded with iOS 5, or at least that’s what The International Business Times says.

Here’s the meat of the ‘rumor.’It’s a little over two more months of agonizing wait for iPhone fans. The latest buzz in the market is that Apple will release the much-awaited iPhone 5 in the first week of September, and some tech websites have gone ahead to make the prediction that the device will arrive on September 7.

The iPhone 5 will come pre-loaded with the iOS 5, the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. Apple fans were dejected that the tech giant broke with tradition this year and refrained from saying anything about the next generation iPhone in its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

I want to go on record saying that this is one of the lamest Apple rumors I’ve come across in a while. There seems to be no substance to the story beyond IB Times picking this date because ’some tech websites have gone ahead to make the prediction.’ Personally, I think the date could be any work day in September (or August/October for that matter …). I can see nothing special about this date

So, when do YOU thing that the iPhone 5 will be released? Let’s kick off an iPhone 5 launch day prediction pool. There are no prizes other than the satisfaction of knowing you were right while I was wrong, but that’s enough bragging rights, right?

Mobile OS War: Apple iOS 5 Versus Google Ice Cream Sandwich

The mobile competition between Google Inc.'s Android and Apple Inc. is getting more intense by the day. Two devices seems to get much hype even before their release date gets finalized -- Apple's next generation iPhone 5 and Google Nexus 4G.

Google Nexus 4G will be loaded with the latest Android software, Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), and will sport an ultra-thin design, BGR reported.
The Nexus 4G will run on Android 4.0 or Ice Cream Sandwich, Google's next version of Android software which will combine the features of Honeycomb tablet OS and Gingerbread phone OS.

Jefferies' analyst Peter Misek said Ice Cream Sandwich's user interface (UI) look and feel will be based on Honeycomb's UI. He has expected Ice Cream Sandwich to combine the phone and tablet code bases but is uncertain about its timing and if it would be open source.
Ice Cream Sandwich is expected to bring features like expanding and resizing widgets and apps, facial detection with the camera and will allow Android devices to be used as USB hosts so that one can plug-in keyboards, or Xbox controllers. It will additionally feature voice-guided GPS feature and Adobe Flash support.

Google has historically selected an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to create the "lead device" for each iteration of Android. Google's own Nexus S was the lead device for Gingerbread and Motorola Mobility's Xoom was the lead device for Honeycomb.
Misek is unsure of the lead device for Ice Cream Sandwich but suspect it could be Samsung. But according to the BGR report, Google's next pure Android version, the Nexus 4G which will run on Ice Cream Sandwich or Android 4.0 will be out, just two months after the iPhone 5 launch.

The Nexus 4G is touted to sport a 1.2GHz or 1.5GHz chip, possibly Krait-based Snapdragon chip. At present Samsung Galaxy S 2 and HTC Sensation boast 1.2 GHz micro processors. It is surmised that Apple iPhone 5 will sport the iPad 2's A5 dual-core chip.

"We believe Texas Instruments and its 1.5GHz OMAP4440 will be the reference design apps processor for Ice Cream Sandwich. We do not expect an official announcement, but the OMAP4440 will likely be the highlighted chip when OEMs announce second half roadmaps this summer. NVIDIA's Tegra 2 was the reference design apps processor for Honeycomb," said Misek.

iPhone 5 will counter Android 4.0 with iOS 5. Apple's iOS 5 has already been launched that gives developers sufficient time to get accustomed to the operating system. Thus, iPhone 5 with iOS ... [ Read More (0.4k in body) ]

Apple iPhone 5 Your New Social Network: Plus Wireless Charging

There’s interesting news about the next Apple iPhone, the iPhone 5 (or 4S), as it seems your iPhone 5 could become your social network according to reports about a new patent application. What’s more, this new social networking application could even rival the likes of Twitter and Facebook.

In recent days OSM’s Tim Ollason has told how the new iOS 5.0 update (due for release in the fall when the iPhone 5 is also rumored for release), will have deeper social media integration. He also then reported on Facebook’s Project Spartan targeting mobile Safari users, the browser used by iPhone and the iPad. Now though it seems that Apple has big plans of its own to enter the social networking world.

Over on Metro, we’re informed that analysts anticipate that the new patent application will get round previous compatibility problems with iPhones and social media sites. As a further note it’s also reported that the next iPhone could be capable of wireless charging so that users will have the capability of charging anywhere at any time. Metro notes that Physorg.com reports on a wireless charging patent. Although Apple has not yet specified which devices will feature it the iPhone is widely anticipated to be one of the devices that will make use of it.

There’s also an interesting article over on International Business Times about the iPhone 5 having its own social network. Apparently the phone will be able to take into account your habits, personal taste, lifestyle and much more and find people you’re likely to get along with in your locality. Other iPhone 5 users will also be able to locate you and befriend you.

This location-based feature will be the core of the new social network. It’s a pretty cool idea and one that we feel could be really successful. The ability to be able to befriend total strangers among other iPhone users who have shared interests will no doubt go down well with iPhone users, who already have their Apple enthusiasm as a shared like to start with. This of course will work differently to sites such as Twitter and Facebook where you need to already know people to befriend them. If you want to find out more about how it will work hit the International Business Times link above. IBT also refers to a facial recognition feature being part of the new feature.

You may also be interested in our recent article about iPhone 5 competition. What are your thoughts on this latest speculation? Are you keen on Apple’s plans for its own social network? Do you hope that wireless charging comes to the iPhone 5? Let us know with your comments.

TMSC To Get 3D Chip For iPhone 5 ?

Fab firm Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. might just be able to beat Intel and launch the world's first 3D processor as the former is said to launch its first commercially available 3D chips before the end of 2011, which would peg it against Intel's own scheduled 22nm Tri-Gate products (Ivy Bridge) according to a person close to the situation.

This could be a massive selling point should TMSC want to convince Apple to switch production from Samsung Electronics for the successors of the iPhone 5 & iPad 2. The iPhone manufacturer is apparently looking to move because both Apple and Samsung have become significant competitors in a number of segments and allowing Samsung to build the brains in its devices would leave Apple with a significant competitive disadvantage.

And Apple's appetite for silicon chips is big enough for TSMC to consider granting Apple exclusivity to the manufacturing process for a foreseeable future. That would also guarantee that TSMC doesn't provide build 3D chips for Apple's competitors (like Nvidia, Qualcomm, Marvell or Broadcom), all of which are fabless companies relying on TSMC for producing the goods.

Going 3D is expected to boost performance by a third while slashing power consumption by half, a compelling argument when planning for more powerful smartphones and tablets.

iPhone 5 Release Date Is The Other 64,000 Megabyte Question Post-iCloud

The hidden iPhone 5 release date is in plain sight if you know which cloud to look behind, but now Apple’s iCloud casts a shadow on another buzzing question regarding the next iPhone model. Somewhere, in some dark closet at the end of a dark hallway in Cupertino, Apple has a figurative date circled on its calendar for when it plans to release the iPhone 5 on the unsuspecting public; it merely hasn’t chosen to reveal that date publicly yet.

Nearly lost amid all the buzz over when the iPhone 5 will arrive, what it’ll look like, and whether it’ll offer new-school features like 4G and NFC is the long-running question of when the iPhone will finally see parity with the iPad and even the iPod touch when it comes to internal storage capacity. The iPad 2 and iPod touch 4 have been sitting pretty at 64 gigabytes for awhile, and now the iPhone 5 faces the proverbial 64 gigabyte question: will it finally catch up? The issue becomes more intriguing when considering the way in which Apple’s new iCloud works.

In theory, the “cloud” could have been all about having all your data store on a remote server farm instead of on any of your local devices, and merely tapping into your own data remotely every time you go to use any of those devices. But that’s not realistic in 2011 or any time soon considering the current state of mobile networks and other factors.

And so Apple’s cloud implementation handles music by simply pushing a song out to all your devices automatically when you add it to any of them. So what does this have to do with the iPhone 5? iCloud more or less now adds all your new music to your iPhone as soon as you add it to your computer, which means that your iPhone is about to get fuller a lot faster. Rather than choosing which songs to sync to your iPhone via a cable, they’ll all go onto your iPhone automatically unless say otherwise or remove them.

And fuller iPhones means more users suddenly having an issue with the fact that the iPhone 4 was capped at 32 gigabytes even as Apple’s other iProducts offered double that on the high end. And so now, the question of whether the iPhone 5 will make the jump to sixty-four gigabytes and make life more comfortable for those who want to take full advantage of iCloud, or whether the iPhone 5 will reach its release date with the same meager 32 GB as last year’s model. Here’s more on the iPhone 5.

iPhone 5 Rumor Rollup
Topic: Technology 12:10 pm EDT, Jun 17, 2011

The iPhone 5 Rumor Industry has recovered from the bitter disappointment of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, where Apple unveiled iOS 5 but didn't even hint at the next iPhone.

This week: We have the Shipment Date, again; details only a geek would love; dire rumors that iPhone 5 users will be stuck with a 5 megapixel camera; tech specs of the unannounced product; and a vision of how iPhone 5 speech recognition will change our lives forever.

The Date: iPhone 5 will ship in September.

Reuters confidently asserts that Apple will start production of iPhone 5 in "July/August" and the device will ship in September (perhaps they mean "September/October?"), based on information from "three people with direct knowledge of the company's supply chain."

It will have a faster processor than iPhone 4 (a long-standing rumor or expectation or yearning) but it will look a lot like the current model.

APPLE IPHONEYS: The iPhone 5 edition

Beatweek is far more precise on the date. In effect, the website says that if the iPhone 5 does ship in September, it will ship after Sept. 13. That's because "Apple traditionally holds its fall press event on the second Tuesday of September, namely the 13th in 2011."

In light of this newest rumor, Beatweek's "buying recommendation" now is: Don't bother to wait for i5, go with i4 which is "nearly the perfect smartphone."

iPhone 5 will have a different LED camera flash module.

It doesn't get much more techno-fetishistic than this. AppleInsider says iPhone 5 could have a "new LED camera flash module from a different manufacturer" than iPhone 4. That's because "Apple is said to have 'greatly reduced' orders of Philips LED flash components in the last one to two months."

You're wondering what that means. Philips supplies the LED flash component for the current iPhone 4. So, if Apple has slashed orders for this component, it "may" [quotes by AppleInsider] indicate that the Philips component won't be used in the upcoming iPhone 5. And, therefore, a different LED flash component will be used instead!

It's just simple logic.

AppleInsider's source for this deductive exercise is a "person familiar with the company's supply chain," who's likely right because this same person "has provided accurate information on Apple's iPhone in the past."

This latest tidbit let AppleInsider rehash all the previous iPhone 5 camera and LED flash rumors: the purported iPhone 5 case that showed a new location for the LED flash; a purported camera component showed the lens and flash as separate elements.

Electronista puts a narrative spin on these fragments, claiming they show that Apple is redesigning ... the camera flash system. "Apple is rumored to be using an eight-megapixel CMOS sensor [camera] from OmniVision that would be more sensitive than in the past," the website says. "While excellent for low light, it could also be overly sensitive to light from a flash that on the iPhone 4 is just a fraction of an inch away."
